I've heard rumors, that it's expected that Microsoft will announce sometime in the next month or two that their X-Box system will drop from $199.99 to $99.99 to better compete with Gamecube ($149.99...of course... ) and PS2.

Wow...If this is true, it looks like Microsoft is having bunches more trouble than I expected. I suppose people are still waiting for that other great exclusive past Halo... Anybody out there in the market for an X-Box?

I thought the gamecube was 149.99? If they kill the X to 99.99, I may get one.

Same as Whitebacon... I haven't heard anything anywhere about the GC dropping to 99 bucks. I'm filing this under "ain't gonna happen for 2 more years".

Why?
I have all three systems, and to be honest, I am pretty happy with my X-Box. And the game selection is simply HUGE. So there are no "hot tiles" but it is a new system, you have to give some things a chance...

For the simple reason that I'm a man about Gameplay. In all of my reviews (which if you haven't read, you can scope them out here on Wienerville....CHEAP PLUG!), you can tell that I like above all else, solid gameplay.

The X-box shows a pretty picture. But all the titles lack gameplay. And if they do, they have other fatal flaws (like controls or horrible game speed). The only game I played on the X-box that was eclusive and was decent was Halo, and I didn't think that it was as great as every said it was (mind you if I played online, I'd probably think otherwise).

Quantity? You can have your quantity. I'm a man of quality though. The GameCube has less games, but you can't deny the fact that the games that are good are VERY good. Meanwhile, the PS2 has games with less shine, but the games are great too.

Overall, I'm not spending 299 canadian for an X-box and it's one DECENT game, when I can get a PS2 and play several.....or I can buy Metriod Prime and a link cable.

I like my Xbox too, though the Cube's been taking most of my gaming time lately with Animal Crossing, Metroid, and Skies of Arcadia.

But Xbox is a great system that pumps out at least one good, solid title every month or two. Games like Toejam & Earl, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Morrowind, Mechassault, Buffy, Halo...I'd say if/when it does drop down to $99, it'd be a sound investment.

Speaking as someone who bought a PS2 and Gamecube, I don't see the attraction to an Xbox. The only games it has look like Tom Clancy novel spin-offs. I tried to make myself want one, my mom even offered to get me one for Christmas, but naaah.

I'm not discounting the idea of EVER getting one, but there just doesn't seem to be that system-selling title out there. No Mario Sunshine or Metroid Prime, no Final Fantasy X or Grand Theft Auto. And until that happens, I'll stick with what I've got.

We have, for over a year now. HUGE selection != GOOD selection, and certainly does not equal EXCLUSIVE selection (giving me a reason to buy an Xbox _instead of_ its competitors). Xbox Live is a step forward, but its broadband requirement locks out large numbers of potential buyers. Splinter Cell is coming to PS2. Morrowind was out on PC first. I'd buy PD Orta if I could; that's one in Xbox's favor... but after that, exclusives still begin and end with Halo. Show me a year-old console where a launch title is STILL the main system-seller... and I'll show you a console with a problem.

The Gamecube isn't setting sales records either, but at least it has a built-in niche audience through its franchise titles. (What Nintendo zombie WON'T rush out and buy the new Zelda game, for instance?) I'm not a big proponent of the Cube, but they're producing both big-name franchises (Metroid, Mario, new Resident Evil titles) and likeable oddities (Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness, Monkey Ball) for it so far, with recognizable system-sellers (Zelda, Pokemon, etc.) on the way.

The fact that Microsoft and Nintendo are both resorting to pack-ins/giveaways illustrates two things -- they're each feeling pressure to gain market share at the expense of the other, and they're both getting stomped by Sony. Badly.

EDIT: As for further price drops... not too likely, IMHO. Microsoft is already bundling two free games with the Xbox; Nintendo's following suit in Europe, and possibly in the US as well (see the related thread in this forum). If prices go much lower, they'll be just this side of the clearance-sale blowout stage.

Well if Xbox does drop to $100 I will get one. At that price its worth it just to get 3 systems together and play some 9 player, 3 TV HALO. Plus I like the idea on being able to put your own music on some games.

The rumor of a $100 Xbox is substantiated if MS requires the consumer purchase a couple years subscription to Xbox Live. That was the rumor that I read. It's like getting $400 off a computer if you subscribe to two years of MSN. It's a strategy of constant revenue.

I own an Xbox and I am very satisfied with it. I cannot understand why anyone would dismiss the system as not having games that focus on gameplay. All of the big name Playstation and Playstation 2 games are more about watching cinematics than gameplay (FF, MGS). I am not interested in PC games and Xbox has a large library of non-PC titles. I got it for Sega love like Shenmue 2 and Jet Set Radio Future. Panzer Dragoon Orta is beautiful shooter bliss. Quality racing games are plentiful. Halo is the best console FPS this generation. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Deathrow are underrated gems. And who can complain about the innovation of adding a hard drive to a console? You will be glad when you realize you don't need to buy $20 memory cards that can only hold a few game saves. Online play is just icing on the cake.

Wow, thats not how its going to go at all.

There are rumors that by Xmas 2003, that the Xbox will be $99 IF you subscribe to three years of XBox Live service at whatever designated price that is at the time(Probably around $50 per year).

The price will not drop to $99 stand alone anytime in the near future. During the holiday rush, PS2 owned a enormous share of sales, but the Xbox still outdid the Gamecube 24% to 14%(courtesy of IGN). Despite ramblings from people stuck in 2001 when it was fashionable to bash XBox due to the creator, it's doing quite well right now and starting to turn out some amazing games.

Each system has something to offer, and I own all three, but I can honestly say that IMO its a two horse race between XBox and PS2. The only two games that I play on GC with any regularity is Metriod and Super Monkey Ball II.

And to go off on the Xbox is huge, nothing but pretty graphics, no games, huge controllers, etc, etc. That's just blatant ignorance. Splinter Cell, Mech Assault, Deathrow, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Halo 2, Fable, Rallisport Challenge, Fung Fu Chaos, Morrowind, Perfect Dark Zero. Out of all those, the only one that is not XB exclusive is Splinter Cell, and it looks dreadful on the PS2.

And as far as networking capabilities go, while I'm not saying XBLive isn't without some complaints, since its broadband only(PS2 and GC allow dialup users), frustration from lag is a uncommon occurance.

oh come on now boy think / what would jesus do / he'd shake his head like a angry mother spoke the boy / he say do what i could do / you take care of it please / but it's the only one you got / and it'd take ten lifetimes boy / to undo what i've done

And of the games you listed:

Splinter Cell: coming to PS2 and PC soon
Halo 2: not out yet, several months away
Fable: not out yet, several months away
Kung Fu Chaos: not out until later this month
Morrowind: been out on PC, with expansion pack
Perfect Dark Zero: not out yet, several months away

leaving Mech Assault (which needs Xbox Live to do it justice), Deathrow (which does look interesting), Rallisport (which I haven't played) and PD Orta (which is brand new and which I praised) to go with Halo, Halo and, er, Halo. Well... I'm glad you're happy.

Word, vsp. Nothing on X-box really thrills me. I've played MechAssault and really wasn't digging it and I gave Halo a shot and am not really sure what the fuss was all about. I thought Splinter Cell looked pretty badass and was kinda jealous until I heard it was coming to PS2. Same deal w/ MGS 2: Subsance, but I already have Sons of Liberty anyway so it wasn't that big a deal in the first place. This is the first I've heard of Pefect Dark Zero, though, so there may finally be an X-Box game coming out that I am truly jealous of...

I am quite happy with my Xbox. I enjoy MechAssault (and I don't have Xbox Live... yet) I liked Halo, even though it's EXTREMELY overhyped, Splinter Cell rocks the proverbial Hiz-ouse, Jet Set Radio Future is leaps and bounds over Jet Grind Radio, and DOA 3 is a very solid little fighting game. As opposed to the Gamecube which (for me) has Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing (which I've quit playing due to lack of time) and Phantasy Star Online (soon to be on the 'Box). The only thing on the PS2 that I'm looking forward to in the near future is .hack//Infection so IMO, out of the three, the Xbox is my favorite.

I'd consider it, assuming I don't have to subscribe just to buy one. (Yeah, I know, no discount, but who cares.) I almost got one over Christmas just for JSRF, and besides, I have connections.

Well let me say my share: I own a Gamecube, and I have a friend who owns all three. We were both kind of down about the X-Box, as it really didn't have anything besides Halo. However, it does have some decent titles now, and some more on the way, and we both enjoy the X-box a lot more now, for several reasons.

1) We finally got used to that goddamned controller. The plus is it has plenty of buttons, and the damn D-Pad is big enough to actually USE (fuck you nintendo!). Also, the cables are really freaking long, which was a bonus until I got my Wavebird.

2) Network Compatability/X-Box Live. Mutliplayer Halo on two tv screens is just awesome. We love it. Can't wait for more games to use these things.

3) Most cross platform games are better on X-box. I became addicted to Madden 2003 (and I usually hate football games that aren't blitz... damn franchise mode) on the X-box, so I bought it for my Cube. It's just not the same...

4) When I bought Madden, I had to spend another $25 dollars to buy a bigger memory card than the one my Cube came with. On the X-box, we still haven't dented the 50,000+ memory blocks we have left on the hard drive.

I still love my Cube, but I don't hate on the X-Box all that much anymore.

-Jag

Well, it looks like Devil May Cry 2 sucks. So now if only AMPLITUDE~! and the next Virtua Fighter would come out on either X-box or Gamecube, and I would never EVER have to buy a PS2.

Oh yeah, VIVA LA ZELDA!!

Year after year, the United States has gone to elaborate lengths, spent enormous sums, taken great risks to build and keep weapons of mass destruction. But why? The only possible explanation, the only possible use they could have for those weapons, is to dominate, intimidate, or attack.
