This is to all Toronto area W's -- there was an advertisement on our local CTV affiliate that at 12:30am tonight/tomorrow morning (however way you wish to look at it) that would tell more about the new XBox.
Has anyone heard about this, or better yetm will anyone stay up late enough to catch it?
I'm wondering whether they'll say anything that I haven't already read elsewhere.
I'm guessing this is the same MTV broadcast that's coming on tonight.
My guess, since it's MTV, that we'll get a five-minute silly sketch, ten minutes of celebrities pretending that they play video games, five minutes of a band performance, and five minutes where they actually show the product. I wouldn't expect anything newsworthy, especially with E3 around the corner.

You were pretty much correct. We got two live songs, a few celebrities pretending to be thrilled, a stupid Pimp My Ride skit where they pimped an Xbox and very quick looks at the new Xbox while avoiding slow close ups of it all. In fact I don't think they once showed the controller except from a distance. They did show some games in action that looked kinda cool, and did a Perfect Dark matchup between two teams that would have been better had they not changed the camera nonstop.
I've seen a lot of people on various boards talking about how disappointing the show was...I don't know what they were expecting. It's MTV. The broadcast was an ADD-edited mishmash of 3 second game clips while some crappy rap-rock band blares in the background and celebrities that you don't care about talk about how awesome the system will be. So in that respect, the show wasn't disappointing at all since it was exactly what I knew it would be. Crap. Any actual NEWS regarding the system we'd care about will probably show up next week with E3, so at least it won't be a long wait.
Still, what little was shown ranged from "that doesn't look any better than what we have now" (Tiger Woods 06, Tony Hawk American Wasteland) to "that's a little better, I guess" (Project Gotham 3, Perfect Dark Zero) to "OH MY GOD" (Need For Speed, Madden). By the time the system comes out I'm sure all of the above will be more impressive though, so there's no reason to pass final judgement at the moment.
What DID annoy me about the MTV show is that they didn't even mention a lot of the appealing aspects of the system...all they did was talk about the wireless controllers and the capability to buy stuff for your in-game characters online (bah).
Regardless, from what I've read on the system I'm fairly impressed and will likely go with that unless Nintendo or Sony put together something really spectacular. I'm certainly not buying a 360 at launch (I learned my lesson after buying an XBox and Dreamcast at launch - both of which were followed by a price drop just a few months later), but by the time the Revolution shows up the following summer maybe the 360 will drop 50 bucks or so and I'll go for it.
The logic of it astounds me: why call it the "360"? Isn't that basically turning around in a circle, henceforth staying in the same position? I don't get it.
I watched half of the show before getting totally bored with it and heading to bed.
Nice to know that MTV has something to fall on when their crop of reality TV series ends. Who'd have thought they made infomercials?
If I remember my XBox Marketing Spin correctly, the 360 is supposed to represent being able to connect to anyone in the world, anytime. And the world is a sphere, and is also a circle, which is 360 degrees, and blahblahblah.
*I* think they didn't want to call it XBox 2 because they didn't want to seem a generation behind PS3.

To answer the question of why Xbox 360, Gamespot's interview with J. Allard:
But for all the grand thinking outside the box, one big issue remained: the box itself. First off, the thing needed a name. "If we were building another console in the 3D era, we'd just call it Xbox 2," said Allard. "So, we eliminated Xbox 2 from the list. So, the name that we came up with was Xbox 360, because we are putting the gamer at the center of the experience."
For me personally, the hardware and features sounds intriguing, but means nothing without the games to back it up. That's what E3 will show hopefully. But either way, I never buy a console on launch.

Since I doubt this means they're making it a 2D-heavy system, and I don't believe games will involve too many dimensions beyond three, this makes no fucking sense.

The next 'D' jump isn't Dimensional. Just as graphical improvements allowed us to jump from 2D games to 3D games, now we are moving to HD (High Def) games. The HD era is the next big thing that MS is pimping.
