Figured I'd try and beat KJames199 to the punch on this one.
The inevitable announcement is here. To compete with Xbox Live Arcade and the PS Network, the Wii will now offer original downloadable titles to complement the Virtual Console.
UK, June 27, 2007 - Nintendo has announced that original downloadable games are heading to Wii thanks to the WiiWare Channel with the aim being to let developers both large and small distribute their titles on the service. Unfortunately, the bad news is that it's not launching until early 2008.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie explained that WiiWare is a chance for smaller and more creative games to be made available to Wii owners, with little or no risk to the developer. According to Nintendo the "remarkable motion controls will give birth to fresh takes on established genres, as well as original ideas that currently exist only in developers' minds".
It'd be a no-brainer that these games could be played online, but with Nintendo, you just never know. Still, though, this announcement ranks a 10 on the Scale of Awesomeness.
