The one singular team that gets *the* least amount of respect these days is Tampa Bay. We're 5-1, a freak play away from being 5-0-1 (the end zone INT against the Saints in the first week), we have the league's top defense (that's evoking comparisons to the 2000 Ravens), and all I ever hear is...

"The Bucs can't score to save their lives!"

"Keyshawn scored today... I bet we don't see that again the rest of the year."

"Gramatica? How can a guy who comes from a family that suffers injuries while celebrating be really good?"

It boils my blood vessels, lemme tell ya.

I hope that people start eating their words after next week, after we've met up with the Eagles, DESTROYED them, and left them for dead...

Q: Why can't the Bucs get any respect?

A: Because they don't deserve it.

Sorry, just had to make the joke. I think the Bucs will get respect, but believe me, it won't come from watching them beat Cleveland, Cincinatti, Baltimore, or (newly sucking) St Louis. I think we'll all agree the Steelers aren't having a stellar season (and if I'll admit it, then you should too), yet they managed to beat two of those teams as well.

On the other hand, when they beat the Eagles next week, they'll probably turn a lot more heads.

Marty doesn't need surgery. This is a great day. I almost feel like I can say, I don't care that the Steelers lost. Again.

I don't know who is comparing the Bucs D to the unholy 2000 Ravens unit, but I just can't see it. The Bucs D has played well, but against Baltimore, Cincy, Cleveland, and Atlanta. Those aren't exactly high powered ofenses.

"Keyshawn scored today...I bet we don't see that again for the rest of the year"

Keyshawn caught 106 passes last year, and only one touchdown. That is an ratio of one touchdown for every 106 receptions. This year he has one touchdown after six games. That puts him on pace for about two or three. Maybe the people saying this are poking fun at the fact that Keyshawn doesn't catch many touchdowns.

Another reason the Bucs might not get any respect is they have never won a playoff game. Tampa was hyped to hell the last few years and never backed it up, always fading easily in the playoffs. Perhaps people have wised up to their act.

Well, I got them for my Fantasy Defense, so I hope they keep it up. Being a Giants fan though, I really dont care if they get respect or not. Just as long as the Gmen have a 500 season, I am happy!

Wrong. 1999, NFC divisional playoffs, against Washington, at the Pirate Ship. We would have won the NFC championship too against St. Louis if it hadn't been for the FASCIST referees...

Opps, sorry about that. I had a feeling I was probably wrong when I typed it, but didn't want to look it up.

Edit: I don't know if anyone cares but the Ravens D of 2000, while considered one of the best ever, finished number 2 that year. The Tennessee Titans gave up fewer yards, and that's how the NFL ranks defenses. Of course the Ravens beat the Titans twice that year, including the divisional playoffs, the game in which Eddie George injured his big toe, sending him and the team that didn't have a clue what to do without him carrying the ball 30 times a game into a downward spiral, along with their defense which went from number one in 2000 to one of the worst in the league the last two years. I hate the Ravens.

I am a Bucs fan. I would like for them to get in and win the Superbowl. But they just seem to be missing that one thing. A great QB maybe. Their offense isn't great but it doesn't need to be with their defense. Of course some more points would make things easier for the whole team.

I'm sorry, but the idea of the term 'DESTROYED' being used in reference to what the Bucs might actually do to a good team is a pretty far fetched concept.

DOnt worry about respect for our Beloved Bucs, when they WIN theyll get it. Its a long season and to get respect you gotta win and keep winning. Argueing about respect in October is pointless. Lets save our arguments for january.

I don't think the Bucs will be getting any respect anytime soon, even with the demise of the mighty St. Louis Empire. The premiere teams in the league are still Green Bay and San Francisco and as long as they keep racking up wins, combined with their tradition, will always outshine teams like the Bucs and even the Patriots.

In other words, no respect for the Bucs until they rack up some Super Bowls.

First of all, the Bucs have won several postseason games. They reached the NFC Title game in 1979, won a wildcard round game in 1982, beat the Lions in the WC Round in 1997 before bowing to SB Champ Green Bay, then defeated Washington in the Divisionals after a bye in 1999.

As for their opposition thus far, I don't care who you're playing, throwing a shutout in the NFL is a damn hard thing to do. The Bucs beat Baltimore 25-0. 3 straight games without giving up a touchdown is awesome no matter who you are playing. Obviously it would be even more impressive if it came against some good offenses, but we will see how they do against the Eagles.

Really the only tough games left for Tampa Bay are Philly, New Orleans and Green Bay. Then there are the games against Chicago, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Carolina (twice) that could be tough or easy depending on the team that shows up to play. Then we have games against Minnesotta and Detroit that should be wins, though the Bucs record in "sure wins" over the years is less than stellar.

For a defense to dominate a game is not that impressive. For a defense to dominate two straight games is good, but nothing spectacular. But extend that to five straight games, against anyone, and you have something special.

EDIT: One last figure: since the opening-week loss to the Saints, the Bucs defense has scored more points (28) than it has given up (23).

I figured between the fact he was doing the handoff as his best possible action shot, and the completely blank stare as his pose shot on the card, I could find no better shot of Mr. Johnson if I tried.

Of course, perhaps I'm bitter due to the fact that due to missing a draft I ended up with him as QB on one of my fantasy teams....god help me.

It could be worse. You could have Fiedler and Shane Matthews, and start... DAVID GARRARD.

Don't worry. No matter how good the Bucs are, Jon Gruden will find a way to lose in the playoffs. Gruden was out-coached by Brian Billick in 2001 and Bill Belichek in 2002.

Hey, and weren't the Raiders 5-1 last year? And didn't they finish 10-6?

Jay, I feel your pain. When the Jets were on a bye last week I had to pick up Chris Redman in place of my usual Chad Pennington. And why yes, that is in the Wienerville league, where my team is an abysmal 2-4-0.

I've got one healthy QB right now: Ray Lucas. (sighs)
