The gist of the story is the GM mailed out qualifying offers to several of their restricted free agents. I stress mailed, not faxed, not sent via courier. The paperwork was sent out late, and several of the players, including Cam Barker and Kris Versteeg had not gotten offers by the deadline. According to the CBA, this makes them unrestricted free agents. The NHLPA is looking to file a grievance to make the UFAs (some sites saying this has been done, however some sites are saying Cam Barker has already re-signed with Chicago). If they become UFAs, obviously the Hawks get no compensation if they are signed by other teams.
