I asked over on the DVDVR board about the Habs wearing white tonight playing against the Leafs in Not-MLF and someone said that the leagure rule this year is dark at home and white on the road.

If this is true, this is another example of how the NHL is just plain backward at the moment.

Hasn't the NFL been doing the same thing for years?

I believe the rule in the NFL is that the home team gets choice of jerseys (didn't Denver get fined for not bringing the right jerseys earlier this year?). I read something last week that said that home teams tend to choose the dark jerseys because wearing dark colours triggers aggressiveness. I'm no psychology major so I have no idea if that's true, but it's an interesting hypothesis.

The NHL used to have visiting teams wear white.....not quite sure when it changed, but they switched it back for this season.

The consensus is that this will allow home teams to show off third jerseys more often in front of a home crowd, and thus increase merchandise sales. Besides, whites are boring. I much prefer the road team to be wearing the bland uniform.

Wow Scabby I never remembered the home team using colored jerseys before this year. But I'll take your word for it.

I dont' like it, I'm much like you I enjoy the road/colored jersey more... But I have a different take on it because I enjoyed seeing every others team jersey when they come and play my team.

The tradition in the NHL, as in the NBA, has *always* been home whites and road colors. However, there was one season (around 1994 or so) where they switched for the first half of the season. I'm not clear as to whether this time it's again a limited thing (as it was then) or whether they're intending to keep it this way permanently.

Since the introduction of the third jerseys, teams have sometimes worn colored third jerseys at home. Also, in the 50th anniversary year some teams occasionally wore their nostalgic jerseys in the opposite place--for example, the Rangers wore their white retro jerseys for an entire road trip (there was one city where the home team forgot they had agreed to that and tried to dress their guys in the usual home whites).

Last season Carolina played at home in Red. At least, they did in all the games that I saw.

While I agree that the norm is wearing white at home, the white jerseys are very bland, and so I always think it's more fun when they wear the team colors for the hometown fans.

At the dawn of the NHL, the teams had one jersey apiece and wore it all the time. In the 30s, every team had two jerseys & the home team got the choice. Finally, in the 50s...the NHL decided that the home team wore dark colors. Then, in the 70s, they decided that the home team should wear the lighter jerseys. Now, with the NHL deciding to go retro, they've gone back to the original idea of dark jerseys at home.

You probably don't remember because you weren't even a glimmer in your parent's eye when the NHL last had the Home Team wearing the dark jerseys. It was some time in the very early 70's if not late 60's when they made the change.

It's all being done for the almighty $$$ - the NHL suits are hoping & planning on the fans to now shell out for the "new" home jersey to wear at games. I think it sux myself. I would much rather see the visiting tems dark jerseys.

Yeah, I'm in the traditionalist camp with home whites. The Bruins are wearing their black this year at home and guess what? They still suck.

Hell, put 'em all in Cooperalls I say. Nothing said intimidation like the Whale wearing green pants.

"Nothing said intimidation like the Whale wearing green pants."

... Or the Kings in their gold pants, part of their "Imperial Margarine" theme from 1967-1988. Scary indeed.

Well, seeing as the ever-lovin' Flames never wore the red & golds in the 'Dome before this year, I can live with it. I mean, the white jerseys were nice...but BLAND. If this means we get cooler jerseys (like the red & black Flames home sweater), then it's a good system.

Well this was kind of unexpected. Marian Hossa signs 12 year deal with Chicago. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4300131 This likely means Havlat is gone, and probably Khabibulin is out unless they can trade Huet.
