Thursday, 'round 1136, the server hosting this message board went down. I didn't bother to find this out until after 5 since I was asleep, then marinating steak, then watching the Lakers lose, and basically anything I could do except go into the room where my computer is and read all the IMs. So much for THAT system, eh?
When a simple reboot didn't clear it up, and remembering that we'd had a problem not 24 hours earlier, I ended up driving over and finding out that the box just plain WOULDN'T power up. Of course, I was done working for the week, so I wasn't about to invest any SERIOUS time in figuring out what the problem was...even though Aaron and I and a few coworkers who were happening by at the moment pretty much counted on a bum power supply.
Anyway, I didn't get around to buying a new one until Sunday afternon, and I didn't get around to INSTALLING it until about half an hour ago. Fortunately, that WAS the problem, the new one DOES work, and we are now back on the air...for better or worse.
The old power supply makes a sound aptly described as "a rattle that definitely should not be" when I shake it, so that's pretty much a guarantee of what had happened...which hopefully means nothing ELSE is bad and the server will run flawlessly for another...hmm, let's see...yes, 20 months before another thing conks out. These power supplies, they're SUPPOSED to last for 100,000 hours, I don't know.
I also put another 64M back in while it was open, since I think I tricked Adam into thinking it was a bad DIMM when it probably wasn't.
I *believe* we have received several generous offers of help to recoup expenses for the hardware ($30 for a $21 power supply? Thank YOU, Fry's), but we'll always listen to any pledges so long as you keep 'em on the down low.
If I didn't answer your IM over the weekend, hopefully this will suffice as explanation enough. (No, Justin Shapiro did not sabotage the box for May Sweeps. But that *would* have been pretty damn cool!)
DNS was pointing to the CRZ.net server during the outage...it should be pointing back here within an hour or two of when you read this (if I did it right - if not, you'll probably not read this until Tuesday. C'est la vie.)
a) some sort of hardware failure, b) some sort of DoS attack by a bored script-kiddie or someone who got banned, c) a cunning ploy by CRZ to force the regulars to realize that there are other things to do in life beyond posting to a wrestling message board.
Of course, the fact that I thought it out to that level indicates that I have my _own_ set of prioritization problems. But I knew that.
"You may be wondering why I have been making so many references lately to Fox News. The reason is that it is now my cable news network of choice -- because if Im going to watch the news and be lied to, I want it to be ridiculously obvious that I am being lied to." -- Center for an Informed America, Newsletter #34

I don't think he would be that subtle.
He's Rolie Polie Olie - and in his world of curves and curls, he's the swellest kid around.
Yea!! The board is back! (Is Teddy Long going to haterize at me for co-opting that?)
Small outstanding weirdness, since the outage: -- http://wienerboard.com/ resolves fine & brings up the W page -- http://www.wienerboard.com/ gives me an alert message: "www.wienerboard.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again". That's the link that I've used for quite some time, so I'm pretty confident that it did work before the outage.
No biggie, just an oddity.
(And thanks for getting the board back up! I don't have any wrestling-fan-friends otherwise!!)

Yeah, I kinda forgot to fix the "A" record for www when I removed the temporary redirects. It should resolve now, even though we don't ever use that name once you get here.
