This week's episode of "The Ultimate
Fighter" covered the elimination of
Bobby Southworth and Josh Rafferty,
the promotion of Nate Quarry, and
the "unelimination" of Chris Leben.

The show began with highlights from
last week's fight between Stephan
Bonnar and Bobby Southworth.
Bonnar defeated Southworth in two
rounds on a split decision. Both
fighters landed big punches. Bonnar
pushed forward, but Southworth
caught him coming in with stiff jabs.

Southworth, who earlier criticized
Chris Leben for complaining about
the judges' decision in his fight,
complained to everyone about
the judges' decision in this fight.
Clips aired of various fighters
giving their opinion which tended
to follow team loyalties, though
Forrest Griffin said "If I had a
green shirt on, a pink shirt, a
blue shirt... If I had a fuckin'
tie-dyed Hawaiian shirt from
1952, Bobby still won that fight."

Dana White came into the dressing
room to talk to Southworth and to
get himself some camera time. The
producer plays to White's vanity
by including numerous power trip
scenes where White is filmed from
below to make him look dominant.

Southworth dismissed White, saying
"I don't really want a pep talk right
now." White replied "Too bad" and
then completely lost his cool. White
accused Southworth of acting like
a psycho. "Why are you yelling
at me?" asked Southworth, cutting
through White's phony accusations.

"I'm not one of his buddies that
he's hanging out with in the house",
said White in an intercut interview.
"He ain't gonna talk to me like that
because at the end of the day, when
this whole thing is over, if this is
really what Bobby wants to do for a
living, I'm the boss. I'm the boss.
It's my way and no other way. End
of story." Dana White could be the
Verne Gagne of MMA, though at least
Verne was once a major star whereas
White is pomp without circumstance.

White accused Bobby of disrespecting
him as the camera dropped to crotch
level to make White look like a giant.
Southworth continued to defend himself,
though he eventually allowed White to
give him an empty pep talk. "You're a
fucking talented guy, you know?" said
White before shaking Bobby's hand and
giving him a blow off pat on the back.

Sometime later, or earlier, White met
with his two coaches and Nate Quarry
to discuss Nate's ankle injury. Nate
was injured in a training accident.
Nate's injury required surgery, so
he was eliminated. Nate cried.

Meanwhile Sam Hoger decided to go
for a run with Team Couture and missed
his training session with Chuck Liddell
and Forrest Griffin. Sam has played
the ultimate strategist. By befriending
his opponents and estranging himself
from his teammates, he's been able to
avoid fighting. Sam explained that
he had made a lapse in judgment as
he grinned smugly at the camera.

White called everyone together and
named Nate as an assistant coach
on Team Couture, formalizing Nate's
self-styled role as camp counselor.

Because Nate was eliminated due to
injury (and because the show had
gone flat without Chris Leben),
White let Nate bring back one of
the eliminated fighters to replace
him. "Sound good?" asked White
rhetorically. Boss White often
looks for validation in that way.

As Nate packed for his emotional
departure from the house, he talked
in voice over about choosing someone
who would be "level headed." Who
was he kidding? Everyone watching
had to know that Nate was going to
bring back his buddy, Chris Leben.
Why did Nate have to leave the house?
Do the coaches get rooms above the gym?
Is Roland Alexander running this show ?

Chris Leben returned to the house,
but there were no fireworks. Leben
claimed that Koscheck, who has been
unflappable all along, was obviously
upset that he was back. Apparently
Leben didn't realize that crying on
television is the kiss of death for
a babyface. Just ask Bob Backlund.

Team Couture won the challenge.
Leben said "it's not the same as
a fight, but it's nice to win at
something, I guess." Mike Swick
said "I think we have the power
right now." Coach Randy Couture
talked about "turning the tide."

Did it matter? If Team Couture
lost, they would get a replacement
fighter from Team Liddell. Couture
is apparently guaranteed to have
a fighter in each final even if his
team loses every fight until then.

The bad news for Couture was that
neither of his middleweights wanted
to fight. Leben begged off because
he fought less than a week earlier
in what some breathless pundits had
dubbed a "loser leaves town" match.
So much for the "Memphis booking"
theory. Leben's return looks more
like the Florida or Texas booking
that ruined "loser leaves town" as
a money drawing match stipulation.

Josh Rafferty tried to beg off as
well, claiming all three fighters
were bad matchups for him. Maybe
he was hoping to fight Chris Leben?
Eventually Rafferty, who was part
of Team Liddell a week earlier,
accepted the fight and selected
Diego Sanchez as his opponent.
Some suggested that Rafferty had
chosen the worst matchup to avoid
fighting his friend, Kenny Florian.

Couture said that Rafferty had a
"puncher's chance", but that he
had his work cut out for him.
Rafferty discussed the strategy
he had worked out with Couture
and camp counselor Nate Quarry
to stay back and wait for Diego.
Diego's preparations included
wrapping himself in plastic and
channeling energy from a storm.

Earlier Rafferty had apologized
to Diego for choosing him. As
Josh walked away, Diego looked
back over his shoulder in "what
was that?" fashion, suggesting
that he would have no qualms
about beating up Rafferty.

Rafferty's strategy of staying
back and waiting to catch Diego
with a punch as he charged in
resulted in him losing the fight
without landing a single punch.
Diego took Josh down, pummeled
him from the mount, forced him
to turn over, and caught him
with a choke for the tap out.
Rafferty was badly outclassed,
though he took two minutes of
abuse before he tapped out.

The teaser for the next episode
of "The Ultimate Fighter" was
shown in split screen without
audio, but one can guess that
Team Liddell will have to send
another fighter to Team Couture
as a penalty for winning a fight.

Given the appearance of booking
interference in earlier episodes,
my guess is that Josh Koscheck
will be sent to Team Couture
where he'll have to share a room
with his former nemesis, Chris
Leben, in the UFC's version of
"The Odd Couple." I can already
hear Koscheck complaining to his
former teammates about his "white
trash" roommate leaving wads of
chewing tobacco around the room.

I was into the show for the first few episodes. But hearing that they brought back Leben after he lost the fight to Josh totally made the show seem Flybynight/makeup the rules as you go, which totally turned me off to it. I doubt I'll watch it again as the interest factor now is totally lost.

I'm in the same boat as Ozzysun. I also question the legitimacy of some of the fighters now -- I mean, what the HELL was Rafferty doing there? The guy didn't know how to attack, didn't know how to defend, didn't know ground, didn't know pound.

What did he know? How did he ever win fights? I suppose he's been beating up tomato cans... literally. If he's amongst the best they can dredge up, that's pretty sad. I mean, he seems like a nice kid, but he had no business being there.

The show went from promising to "eh" the moment Koscheck beat Leben; it went from "eh" to "what the hell?" the moment they brought Leben back; and it went from "what the hell?" to "this is garbage" when I had to watch two guys try and whine out of fighting... then the one guy get his ass handed to him.

Ah well.

I've got the Contender now. In comparison, the Ultimate Fighter just looks bush league.

I agree with Sobriquet. I was really into TUF the first few episodes and was psyched to see Koscheck v. Leben. But that was a dud and ever since the show has been getting gradually worse. I will still watch becasue I am dying to see Forrest in the ring. He has the look and feel of someone who can take an large amount of pain and dish it out too.

If they ever do a Part II, I hope that the fighting is a round robin scenario. This way by now I would have seen most of the fighters in the ring. As of now, there are still some guys we have yet to see step in.

A promising show that lost itself. And yes, the Contender looks great. However, I have no idea which noght it will be on since it was on Monday and this Thursday and Sunday. If they keep this up, I will lose interest in trying to follow it around the dial.

I think you're an asshole. No, no, let me correct that, an immature asshole. Which is fine, except that you're marrying my daughter and I'm afraid that my grandchildren are gonna be little assholes.

Great recap Frank. Thanks alot, as I had to work on Monday and taped 24 instead of the RAW/TUF block.

Will Dana be forcing the winner to marry his daughter to get a title shot?

Yeah, for Memphis booking, they should have waited another week and then brought Leben back under a mask.

The UFC had to dramatically change the original line-up of 16 fighters they had chosen. They ran extensive background checks and discovered many of the best fighters had criminal records. These fighters were removed from the show for PR reasons. The UFC thought it would be bad for public perception if in the sport they are trying to promote to an uninitiated public, the majority of the best young talent all ahad criminal records (go figure).

The show itself has had problems the past few of weeks: mind-numbing reality show cliches, awful judging and a bad fight (Leben/Koshcheck).

To me, the best part of the shows, are the fights. As they weed out the unqualified, the fight quality should improve (at least in theory).

Bringing back Leben was definitely questionable but what else are they going to do? In other reality show when one person has to drop out they just don't have an elimination that week. But they couldn't not have an elimination that week, that's the reason to watch the show.

Rafferty was pretty pathetic but remember everyone was surprised that he picked Diego, probably because Diego was the best of the choices, Rafferty might not have looked as bad against one of the other guys. And while Rafferty did suck I do look forward to more Diego.
