Well, hopefully this will mean we don't have to listen to morons clamoring for the team's starting quarterback to be benched in favor of Tebow. Maybe they're signing him as a possible replacement for Gronkowski if his recovery from surgery is behind schedule?
Regardless, we'll see if he's still on the roster come September, that's all that really matters. Lots of guys get signed to deals in the summer and then get cut, especially marginal players like him who are, at best, barely NFL quality (and not at all of NFL quality as a quarterback).
It's one of the best places for him. (The judges would also accept any of the other strong "please God don't let our QB get hurt"-places like Green Bay and New Orleans, or a team with a young gun QB like Kaepernick, Luck, Rusty Wilson, or RG3.)
I half-expect Tebow to be a hybrid FB/LB.
EDIT: Trent Dilfer just called Tebow the "scout team QB". I have to say, with Tannehill, Geno Smith, and E.J. Manuel being the other QBs in the AFC East, smart move to find a guy with mobility to fill that role.

Yeah, my first reaction as you know was of a WTF nature, but the more I think about it the more I like it. Assorted reasons for it being a good move:
1. There is zero QB controversy.
2. We can safely assume the coaching staff want him. We can also safely assume this probably wasn't the case in New Jersey.
3. There are almost certainly worse 3rd string QBs out there. How many would you honestly know anything about? How many could you even name?
4. You might not take Brady off the field for Tim Tebow, but you probably do throw him in for a few plays to run some read/option if Ryan Mallett's starting. So really he's only one injury from seeing some playing time at QB.
5. He's still three years younger than Weeden was when he was drafted.
6. You can have him run the read option in practice, which can't hurt.
7. Shirt sales FTW!
8. We don't have to listen to people prattling on about how unfair it is that nobody will give Tim Tebow a shot in the NFL. The Patriots have therefore provided a great public service which will boost their karma coefficient immeasurably.
9. Having an extra TE never hurts these days.
10. There's every chance he doesn't make the final roster anyway.
That said, as a starting QB I still think he's utterly woeful.
