Sunday's season finale was a half-hour too long, (driven in part by the main villain talking way too long after a lot of unnecessary filler) and its creative choice for an ending was very poorly received.
But enough about WrestleMania.
The second half of this season was met with much negativity. Some of it had to do with that massive time jump six episodes ago that shifted a lot of character motivation, particularly Carol. I was pretty comfortable filling in the blanks regarding Carol, attributing her change to Morgan and Sam.
Rick and co killing so many Saviors, including the unprovoked attack on their compound, took away a lot of sympathy. And Rick's increasing overconfidence and power-trip-ness was eventually going to blow up in his face. At one point, they had me thinking the Saviors were like the Others, i.e., not necessarily a full-on "we're the good guys, Michael" but definitely less of the threat they were perceived to be.
And then, in the last segment of the season finale, Negan *finally* appears. And he talks. And talks. And talks. It's gets boring and less threatening the more he talks. Yes, he eventually repeatedly swings Lucille into the head of an unknown victim, but it didn't take me to pee-pee-pants-city. Rick was great during this, however, as he realizes what his hubris has brought on. I might have hated the cliffhanger, but I have to say the first person view - with blood dripping down, other voices and noises going muffled, and then eventually darkness - was brutal as hell (in a good way).
Fans are up in arms about "Who died?! Who died?! Tell us who died!!!". I'm over here thinking no one died. Yes, the beating was clearly brutal, but Negan said specifically that he doesn't benefit from killing them. He said one of them would "get the hell beat out of them."
I was more annoyed by the payoff to the Daryl cliffhanger from the previous week. IT LOOKS LIKE HE DIED! Oh no, he's fine and he's in the back of this van.
I liked this episode. It had a creepy aspect to it as well as a feeling of oh shit the world is still a really scary place, maybe moreso now than ever before.
What I don't like about the show in general is I never feel like there is any real danger because there are so many last minute saves, Dusty Finishes, and back against the wall we got this moments. So, while this seems like a legitimate threat, one Larger than the Governor and his tank and hippy cannibals I'm sure in the end everything will be just fine.
If Abraham is the one who got smashed I'll be fine with it. I have been done with him ever since his "why are dingleberries Brown", break up speach.
I don't do spoilers, but I had no problem with the cliffhanger.

I thought the build to the appearance of Negan worked well. He's such a charismatic character in the comic that I was hotly anticipating his arrival to give the show a much needed injection of excitement. The actor did a fine job; the next series such be fun.
I wasn't a fan of the cliffhanger. The fact that the show is beginning to be mentioned in the same breath as Lost suggests that the audience is losing faith in the producers having a clear sense of where this is going. A little bit more of a definite payoff would have been much more satisfying.

I really don't see the comparisons to Lost, there are still a few more storylines left to follow alongside the comic. At least 2-3 seasons worth in comic stories and however many stories they decide to tell on their own. It depends on when the writers decide to end it on their own terms (earlier than the comic storyline or after Kirkman ends comic) or if AMC decides to end it sooner than the writers have planned.
