Wow, that has to be one of the grimmest couch gags in the show's entire run. I waited for a payoff, but the closest we got was a dead unicorn.
This was a great episode. I love that the show jumped on the sabremetrics trend in baseball. More than that, the episode was hilarious and full of good one-liners and visual gags. THIS is how you do a baseball episode!
The highlights for me: -The fencing duel between Lisa and Maggie. -"That's a problem for future Homer. Man, I don't envy that guy," leading to the hilarious visual of Homer mixing vodka and mayonnaise. -Frink: "Then it's GOOD TO BE GRIENKE! Uh...unless he's got a bunion, in which case he's notably ineffective." -Ralph: "I caught a white apple!" -"Speaking of 'homer', Bart's father's name is...you guessed it...NOT on my fact sheet!" -"Testing..." **AIRHORN!!!** -"Ralph can't play because he's too juiced!" -And HOLY CRAP! It's Mike Scoiscia! And they remembered his radiation poisoning!!! "It gave me Super Managing Powers!"
It's been a great season so far. This show's on a roll!
We're flying a giant orange "CONAN" blimp over the baseball playoffs. Finally, subtlety in advertising. @ConanOBrien

Well, I can't quite go "great", or even "good", but it had more moments than most shows the last couple of seasons have. After the couch gag not only sucked but took forever to do it, and some of the pacing early on seemed almost designed to stall, I was really not expecting much...but the Sabremetric stuff, at least, did work pretty well. And, yes, the callback to Homer At The Bat was genius.
Still, it amazes me that people express so much love for recent episodes...I think the show was still good for a remarkably long time, but in the last few years they've only done a couple of good episodes per season. I thought the season opener was pretty bad. (Haven't watched last week's yet...it's on tape, but with the playoffs and all and my work schedule I haven't gotten to it yet.)
As a big baseball fan, this was the funniest episode they've done in a long time. Tons of little jokes that only ball fans would get (i.e. Lenny Dykstra's crooked accounting, the faux-Scully using the fact sheet, Oscar Gamble's afro, etc.)
"You are going to get a certain amount of snarkiness on the Internet no matter what, and my rule is that you don't post anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face." Marc Andreyko (Writer of DC Comic's "Manhunter")
I thought it was a good episode - good by recent standards, rather than good by what they used to do standards. I think the days of the instant classic Simpsons episode are long gone.
Really enjoyed the Scoiscia continutity. Also enjoyed the Homer in this episode. Future Homer and underpants dinner made me laugh. Been a solid opening to the season, like a good lead off hitter. No Homers but on base.
I didn't mind the intro. Sure it was dark and cynical, but it was also creative and new and whenever I look at DVDs. I'll wonder about the unicorn.

I actually really liked this one, perhaps the best of the season. A lot of the little jokes worked, and Homer, while usually overbearing, was quite subdued for most of the episode.
