Some may despise schmaltzy sentimentality, but I don't when it's done well. The 9,986,000 Minutes song everyone sang to Michael at the end blindsided me. I thought it was sweet - it recognizes that Michael meant something to everyone, the future is uncertain, and he'll be missed.
Creed won the episode with his one line: "I watch you when you sleep." Oscar: "I forgive you for kissing me."
Will Ferrell also played Deangelo Vickers in a new fourth way completely unreleated to the three ways he played him last week.
One more and it's over for Michael Gary Scott. He is gone next week. Big 50 minute super sized send off. "This is gonna hurt like a motherfucker."
P.S. I would hate to get dumped by Erin.

Hello.
The end touched even my cold, cruel Office heart. Possibly the first big emotional Moment moment that resonated with me on the show since ... Jim came back from the corporate interview and asked Pam out and she smiled? I might have intimacy issues, I dunno.
Like I said in the 30 Rock thread, the original Dundies episode is in all-time top 3 (with...hm. two of The Injury, The Merger, The Return, Dinner Party, Dream Team) so I had a lot of predisposed goodwill that was not squandered.
Jim, kind of phenomenal this episode between his not being interested in Erin (a great non-rare moment of self-awareness -- just because it's a stock sitcom moment calling for advice doesn't mean he has to care) and his acceptance speech.
It was made all the more brutal by Gabe feeling the need to say a few words in honor of him being publicly humiliated.
Given that I am going through very similar things in my own job (e.g. leaving a long term job that I love to move out of state with my new wife), I am entirely unable to objectively judge these last few episodes. I love them all.
I laughed SO hard at Vickers asking Jim where he was on 9/11 as part of his unscripted banter, and it didn't even dawn on me until later that he was just in "trying to make conversation mode," because when I heard it, my first reaction for some reason was he was accusing Jim of being a part of 9/11 (the old cop cliche of "where were you on the night of ____" was what I was thinking).
I love how Office episodes can so seamlessly weave together hilarity and sentimentality.
The modified 'Seasons of Love' was brilliant. Giving everyone a line during it was inspired. And Michael finally having achieved what he wanted (his employees to be like a family) was the cherry on top.
Damn, Erin. Underneath the cute, bubbly, eager-to-please exterior...and interior...lies a cold, cruel woman. Who cringes when you talk, Gabe.
Speaking of Gabe, how has there been no mention of the Scranton Strangler storyline still playing out? At this point, it HAS to be someone we know. Gabe might not fit timeline-wise...but my candidate? Angela's state senator boyfriend.
And Pam's mistake be a lesson to all of you middle class frauds; don't use the phrase "it's like crack" unless you actually have been on crack. You will offend Ryan Howard.

Uh, what?
Toby JUST came back and reminded you that he was on the jury that found the Scranton Strangler guilty and sentenced him to death. He's in prison. Gabe and Angela's boyfriend were at the Dundies.
Toby wasn't sure if they jury had the right man, though. That would be a pretty great twist to actually have it be someone be know from the cast -- murdering people might be the least of Creed's crimes against humanity.
Or, after all of these emotional goodbye episodes, Michael changes his mind and decides to remain in Scranton. That's when the Strangler suddenly jumps out from behind a bush and chokes him to death. And that's how Michael Scott is written out of the show.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball

I've had a friend saying for months that Michael beings strangled is how he gets written off the show. Now that friend is saying DeAngelo is the strangler, because his name is so ridiculous it HAS to be an alias.
Another friend also suggested Gabe-as-the-strangler yesterday too.
So maybe there will be more to the strangler story...I also heard 1 of the multitude of guest stars in the season finale will be the strangler. Though yesterday's news that Jim Carrey will be a part of it made it sound like all the guest stars will be playing applicants for Michael's job, and will probably show up in rapid fire talking head shots or something...

They're definitely going to do something regarding the Strangler. The references have gone on for far too long for it to just be a random background thing. That's also part of the reasoning behind why I think it'll be Angela's state senator boyfriend; they keep finding ways in every episode to explicitly mention him.
Though any one of the guest stars being the Strangler would fit too. They definitely brought in a whole lot of them, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that the writers decided to make one of them the culprit.
Ranking the suspects by probability looks something like:
Angela's boyfriend One of the guest stars Gabe
I would think, anyways. And who else could be on the suspect list? Jan, maybe?

I think the Strangler is just a red herring and will have no bearing on the show. If anything, the Strangler would turn out to be Tobey, prompting Michael to say he can now leave in peace.

I'm mostly in agreement with your first premise, though i do think that if anybody is revealed to be the strangler then it won't be any of the main cast. That would be way too dark in tone for The Office.
The misses and I watched the first hour of L&O and then changed to this for something different. We commented that every room in every building in NY has the same lighting and all of them are bad...
