WWE To Release Jerry Lawler?; Dudleyz/WWE Update, & More
Written by Matthew Boone on 07/10/05 @ 6:10 PM

Credit: PWTorch.com Newsletter

With the recent addition of The Coach to the RAW broadcast team, some speculation is taking place within WWE that Jerry Lawler could be moved off the team or even released by WWE possibly. The overwhelming opinion of Lawler in WWE is that he is seen as overpaid of what is asked of him and many feel The Coach can fill his shoes for a much smaller salary. It should be noted that Coach is said to be more popular and social with key members of the WWE production staff than Lawler is at this point.

Concerning the WWE's decision to not seek renegotiation with The Dudley Boyz this past week, one WWE wrestler wasn't said to be surprised of the move at all. "Creative kept telling the Dudleys they were trying to come up with something for them," said the wrestler. "But they never had anything for them. Their leaving doesn't surprise me at all."

Maybe Coach is more popular backstage, but for me anyway, he doesn't cut it at the broadcast table.

We don't need 3 announcers on Raw. Let Coach stick to his Diva / backstage / dancing duties and keep him away from JR and Lawler.

It's bad enough having to listen to drivel from Michael Cole on Smackdown without another less knowledeable announcer spoiling Raw.

If it means (when Trish gets healthy) that I can enjoy a women's title match without hearing Lawler's "PUPPIES~!" routine, I suggest that he kindly hit the road, Jack, and don'cha come back no more.

Lawler wore out his welcome with me a looong time ago. I'm not convinced that Coach would necessarily be better, but clearly changes need to be made.

Count me as one of those glad to see Coach in the announce position. He's a fine heel announcer, and that part of RAW needs an upgrade the most. Coach is alrady hosting the Diva Search segments, a spot Lawler would have owned a few years ago.

The announce team seems the most anachronistic for a company trying to reach the fraternity sales demographic. Lawler and Ross are the oldest regular cast members and the voices of the show. Yet they insist on using cliches, metaphors and references that go back beyond my own 33 years. I'm not looking for some wigged-out VJ reject who's gonna scream in my ear with his extreme insanity. But the hope of luring in the college TV crowd with Gordon Solie-esque packaging is lazy thinking.

I agree. And I think JR would be much more energized if he had someone new to play off of.

Besides the good guy/ bad guy announcing crew is a tired cliche, in & of itself. I think it would be much more interesting to have a pair of commentators whose bias wasn't heel vs. face -- but a bias based on something different -- such as an old school wrestling traditionalist vs. a push-the-envelope/ "crash TV" proponent.

X-E's co-Worst Poster of all time! JKyle.com says:

Actually Cole has gone from being the bane of my existence to more than serviceable.

Lawler, on the other hand, broke up the JR/Heyman combo when he came back (thus ending my second favorite announce team behind Monsoon/Heenan) and quickly deteriorated taking two steps back for every on step Cole has taken forward.

Coach has made it EASIER to listen to Raw even if he's not ready for Prime Time, so hell, give us a month of Ross/Coach and let's see how that goes.

If they do get rid of the King, they should bring Tazz over to Raw and send the Coach to SD!

But I doubt they are really going to get rid of Lawler.

Lawler was still (essentially) what he is today, in terms of his annoying character, etc., when he quit the company in 2001. Yet once he left there was a HUGE backlash, and people were trying to get him to return. I think that would happen again, particularly if the guy was fired this time.

Look, I'm not a huge Lawler fan, and like Angry Johnny said, Heyman-Ross was arguably THE best announcing team on Raw. But firing someone who is a huge part of the show (like him or hate him) is probably a mistake. He's a legend of the business, and his voice (like JR's) has become synonymous with Raw.

I think Coach has improved his game over the past couple of years, but I think he'd be better used as a heel manager and fill-in play-by-play guy.

I'll certainly take Coach over Lawler any day of the week, and twice on Mondays. Especially since Coach's broadcast tenure has so far made him out as a play-by-play man, when it's obvious he should be doing color comentary.

I really, really liked Coach as a color commentator; he plays the chickenshit heel character perfectly. He holds his own against Ross, and he's easier on the ears than Lawler is.

I disagree with the Heyman/Ross being the best team; only because I get really tired of Heyman's voice really quickly. His wrestling knowledge, sense of humour and everything is amazing, but his voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

I will admit, I liked Snow/Coachman as the Raw announcers during their minifeud with Lawler/Ross.

I thought JR-Lawler kicked ass around 1998, not to mention the extraordinarily underrated team of McMahon-Lawler before that, but by the time he walked out in 2001, I was done with him. He hasn't had anything good to contribute in years. Coach isn't there to wow you with his awesome depth of wrestling knowledge -- he's there to be a jerk, which he is very good at. I wouldn't think twice about dumping Lawler for Coach.

I might also add that as far as the age/coolness issue goes, Coach strikes a nice balance between the current codgers and the nearly indistinguishable pouty-mouthed, spiky-haired twentysomethings that WWE keeps hiring for some reason.

I agree. Lawler's act has worn so thin it is pathetic. Puppies are the only thing he gets excited about and he doesn't use any of his history in the ring to convey what is going on in a match. Coach has gone from not knowing anything aboutwrestling to being an effective heel announcer and having the ability to get cheap heat on the level Angle used to.

A friend made an interesting observation. IF Heyman is replacing Cornette at OVW, it appears to be only a temporary shift while WWE finds a permanent replacement (at least, as the rumors fly).

Why not Lawler? He knows the circuit, the fans, the history of the area, can work heel or face, can go in the ring when he wants to, and knows OVW. It would give him a chance to book again and he could return for occasional appearances on WWE when the times were right. Plus, you open the spot on RAW for Coach without looking like you're kicking the fan-favorite to the streets.

Of course, who knows? They may be hoping Heyman enjoys his time in OVW and wants to stay.

Just a thought.

Most of the time, Lawler still entertains me, even if I find him VERY annoying at other times. Usually, however, I find the reason I get annoyed with Lawler is because the "story" in the ring is lacking entertainment value. At the risk of crapping on the writers, there have been far too many angles that simply get dragged on a week or two too long.

Lawler is much better than people give him credit for. He is generally very funny, and he knows when to shut up enough to let the action in the ring take the spotlight.

As JR has in recent years slipped a notch from being well above everyone else, it might not have been as noticeable if Lawler could have stepped it up a bit more, but with Jerry, you know what you're going to get.

As a "heel" announcer who's a bigger face than most of the roster, he's never going to be as good as a Heenan or even a Jesse Ventura.

Since Jerry and JR have been together so long, they do sometimes seem tired. But why is Jerry the one suspected of being on the hot seat? Hasn't JR been reducing his role for the past few years? Why aren't people looking at adding Coach as an indicator of JR's retirement?

While he does fire off a funny one-liner at times, he also refuses to let an extended promo stand by itself. He interjects while the speaker works the crowd or gins up the next line. And that interjection makes me want to reach through the TV and throttle him.

He tries too hard to underscore a heel's villainy or arogance or the face's purity and determination. I don't need him acting as a wrestling mark-track. I don't think anyone over 13 needs it either, even if they're brand new to the storylines. That's what the constant video replays are for.
