I don't know if I'm the only one around here who likes the CFL more than the NFL (although I do enjoy the NFL as well).

Three reasons why I like the CFL more is;

- 3 Downs means you gotta go for it sometimes....and execution and the fundamentals of th egame is important.
- Bigger field allows for more player movement....and with the extra player out there for each time it is still decent space wise.
- Players don't play for money, they play because htey love the game.

I'd be willing to give it a chance, if I actually got to see CFL games. I only catch the stray game ESPN or FOX sports MIGHT show. I barely even remember the games that were shown when the NFL went on strike many many years ago. Yes, I'm old, but just old enough to barely remember those games.

I just wish TNN was still showing Arena Football games on Sunday :-(

I love the CFL. I love the atmosphere at CFL games. I love the CFL rules (especially the 25-second play clock -- 25 seconds is all it takes to signal in a play and hike the ball, gentlemen) and field size. I can't wait till the CFL season kicks off again.

But I can't ignore the fact that the CFL is a minor league. Any and all decent players with some size flee to the big bucks in the NFL at the first available opportunity. It's a shame that the NFL is so conservative that it won't look north to find ways to improve its product.

But that isn't entirely a bad thing -- it is such a thrill to see former CFL players do well in the NFL. Warren Moon kicked ass in Edmonton (which I hated him for) but I was cheering as loud as anyone for him when he was kicking ass in the States. And Jeff Garcia, who I cheered for years here in Calgary, has single-handedly turned me into a '49s fan. I hated the '49s ... until that honourary Canadian won the starting job.

I like traditional football. That means 4 downs, and guys don't get a running start at the line of scrimmage. I like the idea of a running game (which doesn't seem to exist in the CFL with the 3 downs). But I actually like defense, too. Just my personal preference (thought the CFL has never done will with their expansion attempts into the U.S.)

And I'm willing to bet a lot of the guys playing in the CFL play for a shot at the NFL. Those who are not playing for a shot at the NFL only play for the CFL because its the only place they can play. And playing still beats flipping burgers at the McDonald's.

Here is an assumption I've always had about the dumbest thing about the CFL...

Tie game. Three seconds left. Grey Cup on the line. Hamilton has the ball on Ottawa's 4-yard line and decides to go for the game-winning field goal. The kicker chokes worse than Ray Finkle and misses the kick by a mile...BUT...Ottawa can't get the ball out of the end zone and loses by one point?

I always thought that's how the rule is. Is that right? If so, that's pretty stupid.

That's the rouge. If they get the ball all the way through the end zone, it's also a point. That's probably what they'd do in that situation.

At the same time, the Ottawa player could also run the missed field goal all the way down the field to win the game as well.

Rules of the CFL different from the NFL:

1. Teams (which will be named "Roughriders") will play on a field at least 200 yards long, measured by meters. Also, there will be a line in the middle, marked with a "C". This is the BLUE LINE.

2. If you run the ball, you are stupid and must punt on third down. For this you will get a point.

3. No more than 10 thousand people will be allowed to watch the game live.

4. All backs can run at any time toward the line of scrimmage, creating a "scrum". For this you get a point.

5. One player will be allowed to sweep clean the field before any advancing ballcarrier.

6. If a field goal is missed, or a punt goes out of the end zone, "Icing" will be called and a face-off will occur between Labour and Conservative party representatives. For this both teams will get a point.

6a. SPECIAL QUEBEC RULE. In this case, a "croissant" is called and the Quebecois get one point.

7. In the end, the team with the fewest Canadian players wins.

8. You get one point.

Speaking of Packers, where is Sterling Sharpe and why is it Michael Irving who is showing off stylish suits on ESPN this season? Other than Tom Jackson, he was one of the few reasons left to watch that show.
