Several teams are in the race to trade for Johan Santana. Reports already surfaced that the Yankees are talking with the Twins over a possible trade. There's also another report that surfaced naming the Mets as possible contenders. Other rumored teams include the Red Sox, Dodgers, and Angels.
So who ends up with Santana?
Personally, as much as I'd love to see him land in Anaheim (give the Twins Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, and Joe Saunders, sez I), I see him ending up in the National League. No way do the Twins want to play against Johan if he bolts town.
"Wocka Wocka...who wants to hear a funny-ass joke?"
UNless they think they are two or three wins shy of winning the pennant next year, facing Santana wouldnt be a concern. And, I think they are FAR from being two or three wins shy of the playoffs. That being said, the Angels seem hell bent on being a force and I wouldnt doubt that they'd put together the best deal. Everybody who talks to the yankees want either Chamberland or Cano, and that isnt happening. Too bad, Johan would be a great addition to the Yankees. As long as Boston doesn't get him, I'm okay with wherever he ends up.
The Twins did make a trade involving one of their pitchers, Matt Garza. Garza and Tampa Bay Rays' (that just doesn't sound right) Delmon Young, the key players in a 6 man trade.
If Minny is getting some multi-pitcher combo (a la Hughes/Kennedy or Lester/Bucholtz) for Santana, then I can see why they moved Garza. I think Delmon has a lot of talent and this was a really good move by the Twins to help make up some of Hunter's offense.
The Red Sox and Twins are discussing the framework of a Johan Santana deal that would have Boston sending four players to Minnesota in return for the two-time Cy Young Award winner, including center fielder Coco Crisp, pitcher Jon Lester and minor-league shortstop Jed Lowrie, the trio that would anchor the deal.
Good gravy! A trade to the Sox could be a Doomsday scenario for the rest of the league, because who could stop a rotation of Beckett, Santana, Schilling, Matsuzaka, and Buchholz/Wakefield?
The only kink in this trade could be Santana's demand for a long-term deal. Otherwise, it's time to declare the Red Sox the New Yankees.

As much as I wouldn't want to lose Lester, getting Santana for him and two essentially expendable parts (Crisp is more'n likely getting replaced by Ellsbury anyway, and Lowrie's blocked like a... something that can't go anywhere) would just be ridiculous. The only question is who'd be the fourth (because the Twins want someone like Bowden as well). You've gotta admit, that's just unfair that the only major hit the Red Sox'll take is financial (and I'm a Red Sox fan), and they don't even need Santana. But hey, you hit on enough prospects...
As much as I hate to say it. If the Red Sox get Santana, it'll just be the final nail in the coffin for the Yankees. The Yanks on the other hand NEED a number 1 starter. They have no one that can match up against Beckett right now.
Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you... And the Yankees take the lead...
Reluctantly, the Yankees seem prepared to include young right-hander Phil Hughes in a three-player package for baseball's best pitcher. Outfielder Melky Cabrera and an undetermined player would also be included in the trade.
If the Yankees ultimately surrender Hughes, league sources indicate they have a strong chance to complete a trade for Santana.
I'm ambivalent over the choice of Hughes or Kennedy - both are young and based on what I saw last season, have the potential to be top pitchers in this league. The key for me is whether the Yankees have prospects who can take Melky's place, because lord knows we need an experienced starter, especially if Pettitte does end up retiring.
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
The Red Sox see their Phil Hughes and raise them Jacoby Ellsbury...
With the Minnesota Twins insisting on center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury in any trade for pitcher Johan Santana, the Red Sox have altered their offer and have told the Twins they are willing to include the outfielder.
But sources say the Red Sox have also told the Twins they will not trade left-handed pitcher Jon Lester and Ellsbury together in the package they are offering.
I'd personally rather keep Lester around, just because Curt Schilling won't be pitching after 2008. I think this would be a good deal for the Twins to take, though it might not fly without Lester.

It has just been announced (yankees.lhblogs.com) that Pettitte will be back pitching for NY in 2008. What kind of impact this has on the Santana talks - or even any Haren discussions that may or may not actually exist - no clue.
NASHVILLE -- While Hank Steinbrenner set deadlines and publicly lusted after Johan Santana, the Red Sox just bided their time and stayed in the game.
And what do you know? As Monday night turned into Tuesday morning at the winter meetings, suddenly it was the Red Sox who loomed as the favorites to pull off a deal for the best pitcher in baseball.
ESPN the Magazine's Buster Olney reported early Tuesday that the Twins asked the Red Sox for permission to review the medical records of pitcher Jon Lester, amid indications a Red Sox-Twins trade could go down sometime during the early-morning hours.
Hank Steinbrenner huffed and puffed and he might have killed his team's chances of getting Santana. He should have just kept his mouth shut and let Brian Cashman do his job.
You'll know Santana's heading to Boston when you feel that cold chill in your spine.

Let's be honest, it's way more fun having a blowhard Steinbrenner who talks a big game and hurts the Yankees more than he helps them.
If I'm Minnesota, honestly, why not just hang on to Santana? Ellsbury-Lester-Lawrie-whoever isn't much of a package for one of the best 2-3 pitchers in the game. Sure you'll likely lose him after 2008, but at least you'd get compensatory draft picks and a chance to win at least a division title in 2008 with Johan and a healthy Liriano.
He is still a helluva pitcher but he has pitched a boatload of hours the last few years. His era is starting to creep. I would love to have him with the Tribe but not for a deal of more than three years. The Bosox want him yes, but how much of that is to keep him from the evil empire? Could the evil empire even put together a package the Twins want?
