After a hard-fought 7 games, the Lightning managed to hold on and win the series and the Stanley Cup. Brad Richards won the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP.
As a Flames fan...I'm happy. We got 4 rounds of great hockey, and nobody expected them to get anywhere NEAR the playoffs. The team's out of the red and has a great foundation for future runs. The Lightning outplayed the Flames in the last 2 games and totally deserved to win.

It was a great game by two great teams. For the Lightning to come from where they were seven seasons ago is amazing. My hat's off to the boys. They deserve it.

To a Penguins fan admittedly pulling for the Flames, the first two periods didn't do much for me. It really seemed like two teams playing not to lose more than two teams playing to win.
But that third period ... wow. I'm not sure I've seen a more intense 20 minutes in any sport in a long time. Great finish to a great series.
Here's hoping it's not the last for a long time.
And congrats Tampa Bay. Never thought I'd be saying that.

It's great to see how far the Flames went this year-truly inspiring. This season was a success, no question.

Well, that's certainly one way of putting it. I really could have gone either way on this one; I'm happy to see Andreychuk finally win one, but I'm a HUGE Jarome Inginla fan.
Either way, we'll have to enjoy this. I've got a bad feeling that hockey's done for a good while.

The real challenge for both teams is maintaining the level they've gotten themselves to. The Flames were built on hard-working players and grit, so nobody really knew how far they were supposed to go. The Lightning were effectively put together the last few years to win right away, quite like the Flames squads of the 1980s. It was a question of WHEN they'd win the Cup.
Now, bring on the World Cup! And let's hope the CBA gets renewed soon, because a lock-out would be the worst birthday present EVER.

If there's anything better in all of sports than a Stanley Cup celebration, I haven't seen it. You've got to give it up to all the great players on the Lightning. The Flames gave it a great shot, but fell just a bit short. Nothing to be ashamed of there, boys.
p.s. Thank God Hulk Hogan didn't finagle a photo op with the Cup.

Hehe, you could argue Hogan's presence "held down" the Flames.
But anyway, I think Calgary deserved to lose. They played the first two periods like they didn't want it bad enough and despite an admirable hussle in the third it was too late by then.
On the bright side hopefully Tampa will now be a hot market.

Well, the Flames were without a top 4 defenseman (Denis Gauthier), their entire second line (Dean McAmmond, Steve Reinprecht & Shean Donovan), their #3 center (Matt Lombardi) and everyone suspects that Robyn Regehr, Rhett Warrener & Toni Lydman were all playing hurt. That said, they seemed to be in over their heads and basically ran out of gas.

Great. Now this city has another championship bandwagon to jump on. It's been 10 hours and ALREADY I've had more than enough people who look like they wouldn't now a hockey puck if it hit them in the forehead yell at me "GO BOLTS!" We'll see if they manage decent attendance during the regular season next year, something I doubt will happen because, as much as they like to pretend other wise right now, the residents of this city are bandwagon idiots.

Good point. I still know Leaf fans who can't let go of the non-call by Kerry Fraser on Gretzky's high sticking of Gilmour in the 1993 Campbell Conference Championship. 1993.

Um, no. I mean, it WAS a goal--but it was NOT in overtime! At least if you're referring to the one off Iginla's skate--there were about 5 minutes and change left in regulation.
That "computer animation" that ABC busted out was neat (if not entirely convincing), but why didn't they ever show the overhead view? That would seem to be the definitive angle.
Just two thoughts on Game 7: 1, the refs were absolutely right to call the penalty with 1:20 or so left in the game. 2, Khabibulin's save with about 4 or 5 minutes left was *amazing*. The only save I can think of (not that I'm any great expert) that compares for both athleticism and importance was Mike Richter stuffing Pavel Bure on the penalty shot in the 1994 Cup finals, and that wasn't in a game 7.
So I do kinda thing Calgary got screwed, but overall I was still happy with the series.

Kinda like Calgary (pause) Alberta Canada's favorite rasslin' sons, Bret Hart and Lance Storm's careers in WCW and WWE, respectively. :-)
And sadly, this is as close as we'll ever come to a finish in the never-really-explored Hogan/Hart feud.
Now granted, I only flipped occasionally from RAW to Game 7 (stupid me), but the "holy shit" moment for me was when Calgary got the puck in front of Tampa's net with about 10 seconds to go...but only Lightning around it; no Flame to put it in and force overtime. I can only imagine the heartbreak in the Saddledome.
Here's hoping for no damn NHL work stoppage...

Bad calls happen. You're best served to move on.
Yes bad calls do happen, though that first one you mentioned is only considered a bad call by Miami fans who refused to look at the pictures of what really happened.
But yeah I would have called the almost goal in the third in game six a goal. It hit his foot but I replayed it in slow motion and he started his slide/stop before the puck was deflected off the goaltender so it was pretty clear there was no kicking motion. Best to move on anyway.
Yeah the goal where you can clearly see white ice and they didnt call it in Game 6. I only saw the replays because I was working the night of Game 6. With video replay that is unacceptable and the Flames were screwed! Also Frazer loves screwing the Canadian teams! The Leafs of 93 with the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour no call and now this. Frazer is pathitic!
With respect to the Flames recent trades, you missed Cory Stillman (now performing brilliantly for my hockey pool) and Jason Weimer (gritty forward who would be useful in Coach Sutter's new Calgary team) and Phil Housley (an old man, but one with skills)....
