Oh, don't get me wrong here. If Britney announces tomorrow that she's quitting her music and movie careers and starting a new job as a pole dancer, or if she calls up Larry Flynt or the folks at Vivid Video and says "Screw this 'not yet a woman' shit; how much will you pay me to assume gynecological positions on camera?", I'll be among the first to yell YOU GO, GIRL! WHOOP WHOOP! on cue. I wouldn't buy the video myself, but I'd applaud her for being completely honest about the source of her popularity.
There's nothing at all wrong with selling T&A. But there's a hell of a lot of T&A out there, and it bemuses me when one particular set gets prominence over others who have more than that.
Speaking of T&A, Trish Stratus started out as:
We give you what you want. T and A. T is for Test and A is Albert. T and A also stands for tits and ass. These are my tits and this is my ass. And that is why this team is called T and A. Also because those are the first letters of their names. - Trish Stratus (fitness model) - well, Kil's imitation of her on tOA actually, but let's face it, it's much MUCH funnier this way
She got better over time. Will Britney?

Actually I DID read that Britney is going to quit the music and movie industry, for 6 months - 2 years. Now whether any of that has to do with Larry Flynt or Vivid Video, I don't know.
Well, it IS true that the only reason Britany has any noteriety is for sex appeal.. It is not like she has any talent, her voice it TOTALLY computer enhanced- she is definitly packaged for sale. I saw David Bowie at the Area2 concert recently, and I was thinking how BAD he was going to sound because of his age, and you know what? He was incredible. He sounded better live than on any of his albums, and he won me over. Britany, with no talent, sounds horrid live. Sure she can jiggle her boobies for the camera, but as far as making music goes, she has no clue-
Craig Reade "Pool Boy" Chris Jericho stole my beard. That is right, I had it first.
All of the same complaints were made about Madonna in her early career:
"She's all sex-appeal."
"Her star will fade."
"No one will remember her in two years."
"Her music sucks. Her voice sucks."
But she stuck with it and over time has become one of the most respected artists (yes, artists) of our time. She's constantly on not only best-artist lists, but also sexiest-performer lists. She may have only been sex appeal at first, but she eventually developed the skills to go with her looks. I love her music. I'm a big-time Britney hater, but if she sticks with it and develops some skill other than overight boob growth, I guarantee she'll surprise us all with her staying power.

Come on! There are MILES between Madonna and Britany. Yes, Madonna DID use sexual sensationalism, but there was an underlying artistic surrent behind her work. Usually her videos (even the early ones) were rich with sumbolism and had an overall point. Plus she IS a tremendous talent, and her work evolved right off the bat to reflect that. Britany jiggles her boobs. That is about it. And there are tons of other pop-chicks who are famous because they jiggle their boobs, Britany is just the most famous of them. She is not talent- she is prepackaged sex-on-a-CD. I am not saying she is going to go away (Though we have seen less of her) but I think it is sad that she gets recognition as an "artist." Plus Madonna never had her voice enhanced (unless it was part of the "feel" of the song) by a computer. Britany needs that crutch...

Lucky Star was artistic? Material Girl was artistic? Compare those two to her more recent hits like "Ray of Light" or "What It Feels Like for a Girl" or even middle career stuff like "Rain." Madonna is a million miles from where she began. Again: Lucky Star and Material Girl videos were "rich with sumbolism?" Maybe I would accept "Like a Prayer" in that definition, but that's hardly Madonna's "early career."

Surely you're not referencing my post here because I never called Britney "a talent" or "an artist." I wouldn't say that about early Madonna either. But I think Britney can become a respectable artist after several years.
Plus Madonna never had her voice enhanced (unless it was part of the "feel" of the song) by a computer. Britany needs that crutch...
Sir, you are a moron. To say Madonna's voice has never been computer-enhanced shows your utter lack of knowledge about the music industry. Most artists' voices receive computer-polishing. It's a fact. Unless you are someone absolutely incredible, or you're going for the unpolished Ryan Adams-ish sound, then you get a computerized tune-up. I bet Madonna's voice is helped by computers now a bit, but I bet in her early days, it was almost all computerized. SHE was pre-packaged sex-on-a-CD too.

Cripes, why not start at the top? I hate most of Madonna's music, but I have to respect her for developing _quickly_ as an artist. Every album brought a new look AND sound. What's more, she's STILL reinventing herself every couple of years. "Baby One More Time" and "Madonna" had some similarities, but "Britney" next to "True Blue" is like comparing a moped to a Porsche.

I have to vouch for Parts, here. Almost every artist is digitally enhanced these days, so to say Madonna isn't, well, that's just stupid.
I operate a small recording studio that only has about $10,000 worth of equipment in it and even I can pull some good studio tricks. Imagine what the major label, million dollar studios are capable of.
Now, this doesn't take anything away from Madonna's artistry, or another other performers for that matter. After all, the true artistry is in the song writing and the vocal delivery, not so much the quality of the voice. Otherwise, guys that can't really sing all that well (i.e. Dylan, Petty, Bono) wouldn't be the huge stars that they are. And people that can flat out wail, like many an unknown blues or soul singer, would be bigger than they are.
"I'm in collision with every stone I ever threw." - David Gray
The difference between Madonna nd Britany in the digital enhancement area is quantity. Madonna certainly DOES use some enhancement now, but not because she necessarily needs it- it just happens to be available. I guarantee that early in her career it was not as available, and not used... Britany just gets the digital treatment by default, because she definitly needs it... There is also a distinct difference in the use of sex to sell records. Britany uses sex appeal to attract the young men who will buy an album because the singer is hot, and the young women who want to be like her. There is a reason that 90% of Britany's audience is high-school age or younger- it is the impressionable youth. Madonna used sex- not to turn on young boys, but for shock value and sensationalism. It gave her attention, and it was brilliant at the time. Britany is doing nothing new with her approach, she just does it well because she has a nice body. To compare her with Madonna is ridiculous...

Well who the hell do you think made Madonna a star? Senior citizens?
Madonna used sex- not to turn on young boys, but for shock value and sensationalism.
Dude, give me a break. Madonna wasn't trying to turn on the boys? Did she turn you on? She turned me on! Don't think that Britney is lower than early Madonna because Madonna used "shock value and sensationalism." Is Britney just on the cover of Tiger Beat? No. There are stories and blurbs about her almost every month in high-profile adult-marketed magazines, like Newsweek. In fact, I once saw a Newsweek blurb about her instant boob increase. It's all the same thing, but just a different era. You think 53-year-old Joe Bob Duggan the plumber doesn't walk into 7-11 and ogle the life-size Britney poster? She's not just a teen-oriented artist.
It gave her attention, and it was brilliant at the time. Britany is doing nothing new with her approach, she just does it well because she has a nice body. To compare her with Madonna is ridiculous...
So when Madonna was shocking, it was innovative, but because Britney is shocking 18 years later, it's stale? Artists were shocking WAY before Madonna came onto the scene and will be WAY after Madonna and Britney are dead. As to her having a nice body and using it well, Madonna is the same way. Several images instantly come to mind - Madonna rolling around a stage in a rumpled prom dress, Madonna looking like a street tramp in the Borderline video, Madonna making out with a black Jesus statue that comes to life, Madonna in the Erotica and Justify My Love videos...and even now Madonna looks ultra-hot and toned as she throws dollar bills on a stripper in the "Music" video and dances in the "Beautiful Stranger" video. She STILL uses the sex appeal, but has the artistry that supercedes it.
I absolutely love Madonna and I'm taking nothing away from her. But what I'm saying is in her early career, she was just like Britney. She advanced. Britney will advance, too.
"Oh, i'll never understand this emptiness...but I'll never really try and understand, I guess." - Whiskeytown, Sit and Listen to the Rain
Well, Parts, I have to say that I totally disagree... I feel Britany is showing no signs of evolution as an artist, and I seriously doubt any will be forthcoming. I just honestly link her with the Backstreet Boys and old teen-idols like Debbie Gibson who faded away, rather than someone with a real artistic fire. Maybe I am wrong? To be, musical greatness happens after 4 albums- if you can't be #1 on the chart still aftr your 4th album, and if your music is showing no real signs of artistic evolution, you deserve to be called talented. I really do not think Britany will ever be there... I honestly believe she is a product of corperate packaging and prefabrication. The music is almost an afterthought, since that is not what they are selling the public when it comes to Britany. I seiously doubt anyone will convince anyone here... But ask me again when album 4 comes out. If I am wrong, I will admit it freely...
Craig Reade "Pool Boy" Chris Jericho stole my beard. That is right, I had it first.
Madonna's best stuff was early in her career. With each album she got more cynical and angry and lost the fun. The music became overproduced techo-beats compared to the simple, clean tunes she started with. I don't see that as "growth". The human body is designed to grow to a cetain height and that's it. If the human body grew to 20 feet in length it wouldn't work. Later-Madonna is like that.
I wouldn't mind for ONCE to see a musician just stick to their stuff and not try to change to fit in with the times. I don't need to see Eddie Van Halen cut his hair, grow a goatee and try to act grunge. I don't need to see Madonna try to get with the 90s. But I guess its easy to follow the crowd like a sheep.
As for Spears, she has yet to distingush herself from "flavor of the month".
Wow, there are people with more of a tin ear than I have! C'mon, Madonna's early stuff was HEAVILY computer enhanced. Listen to Material Girl. Even I can tell that work has been done on that. It's not like Madonna hasn't admitted herself that she couldn't sing early in her career, and had to learn how.
As far as whether Britney's career path will go the way of Madonna or the way of Debbie Gibson, only time will tell. Odds are in the favor of a Debbie Gibson career path, simply because there are a ton more Debbie Gibson's than Madonna's. However, Parts is right. If, and it's a big if, Britney develops her talents, she could surprise everyone and stick around. Since none of us know Britney, it's hard to say what her plans are, and thus what her chances of success are (other than look at past history to say that most people don't stay popular long). She has all ready maintained her popularity a lot longer than I thought she would.
Well, Spears has advanced well past the One Hit Wonder stage of the game, and is also past the Spice Girls in terms of quanity of CD's that the masses seem to enjoy. However I read an interesting article in the Ottawa Sun a couple of weeks ago, on how gradually the shift is moving away from sex appeal and more towards music, what with people like Avril Lavigne starting to dominate the charts.
*IF* this article is right and people are starting to care more about music than image, then we'll definitly see if Spears has staying power. Now if you excuse me, I'm off to listen to some 'Americian Pie' (the ORIGINAL ONE, not the Madonna remix, which is insadently why I despise her musiclly wise. She killed the classic).
This has nothing to do with Britney, but why the hell is Bono included in that group?? Bono is one of the best pure singers in rock history.
