Nintendo did a Mario-themed Nintendo Direct today and I don't want to do work so here we are:

  • Super Mario 3D All-Stars is coming out for Switch on September 15 with remastered versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. They're going to stop selling it on March 31, 2021. I've somehow never played Super Mario Sunshine and will be getting this.

  • The Wii U's Super Mario 3D World is coming to the Switch as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury on February 12.

  • Super Mario Bros. 35 is a battle royal version of the first Super Mario Bros. game. It's exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers and will only be available and playable from October 1 until March 31, 2021. I assume it's free if they're not keeping it around for the long term. Looks fun. Hopefully I don't suck as bad at it as I do at Fall Guys. (I will.)

  • They're releasing a new Game & Watch with NES versions of Super Mario Bros and The Lost Levels, along with Ball (one of the original Game & Watch games). This looks like it will be NES Classic Mini levels of scarce. Super neat but I don't need another thing that plays Super Mario Bros.

  • Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is some sort of remote-controlled toy kart that you race in the real world and also in a game at the same time. Looks like the kind of neat thing I'd buy and then never use, but tormenting the cat with an RC car is tempting.

  • Cat Mario and Cat Peach amiibo are coming out next year. Remember amiibo?

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting Mario-themes furniture in March, presumably for Mario Day (Mar. 10).

I swear I read somewhere that they were porting an updated SMB2...but are they really, or is it just still on the Nintendo classic list with Switch Online?

I am so curious to see how Sunshine and 64 play with the Joy Con button layout (because the 64 controller was NOT designed for people with small hands and poor coordination), but there are probably ridiculously expensive GC & 64 versions of Switch controllers if I look, right?

There are definitely GC-style controllers for Switch, designed for Smash. You can also get adapters to play Switch using original Gamecube or N64 controllers if you still have some laying around.

They also said that SMGalaxy is playable without motion controls if you're playing the Switch in handheld mode.

I didn't answer the SMB2 part - the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars was added to the Nintendo Switch Online SNES collection last week. That's all I've seen for an updated SMB2.

I've somehow never played Super Mario Galaxy and will be getting this...despite the inclusion of Super Mario Sunshine.

Who am I kidding? I'll replay Sunshine, and love it.

Never owned Wii U, so never played this. Will be getting.

Nor do I, but this will be for my daughter, for when she gets to the right age. I just need to keep repeating: "I will not buy this from the secondary market."

I...kinda really want this. $100 seems too pricey for one "unit", but I can internally justify it. But it seems like having more than one provides the most fun, and that's where it easily becomes cost-prohibitive.
