After this, they HAD BETTER win the WS. Then again, their pitching is extremely shaky and Damon won't hit Grand Slams every night.
Until then though, GO SOX! Win it all.
RORY: So, is this party Grandma's having going to be a big deal? LORELAI: Not really. The government will close that day. Flags will fly at half-mast. Barbra Streisand will give her final concert...again. RORY: Uh-huh. LORELAI: Now, the Pope has previous plans, but he's trying to get out of them. However, Elvis and Jim Morrison are coming and they're bringing chips.
Choke. Collapse. Fall apart. No matter the way you want to put it, it is the worst day for me as a Yankee fan in the 25 years I've been a watching this team.
Congrats to the Sox, who wanted it more. (Now where's that Hemlock bottle I've kept hidden.)
I loved watching the look on the faces of all the Yankees fans waiting for that final out. I'm very happy for the Sox. However, if the Sox win the World Series I may just have to murder Bill Simmons.

You know there have to be some teams looking at who he lets go in an irrational fit of rage. There are some great guys on that coaching staff that could do well in a number of other places.
I've been a Yanks fan my whole life. And one who lived in Boston. I respect the Sox. Always have. I think many of their fans should be sterilized. But that's any team, any sport.
This was a great series. A huge collapse and a greater comeback. Congratulations to the Sox. My hat is off to you.
ETA: And expect a huge personell change, yes. It starts with Cashman, who'll be fired before he can leave The Stadium. But I don't even think Mattingly's job is safe.

I had snuck away from a night work meetng right after the Yankees pulled Kevin Brown. I leaned over to my co-worker and said, "Wouldn't it be funny if he just belted the first pitch over the left field wall?"
10 seconds later...
"Well, you were almost right."
That was the only party of the game, aside from the last threee outs, I got to see. Man, what a series.
It really doesn't matter if they win the World Series... they're in the history books for the greatest comback in major league history. Not even the Yankees have that honor.

I'll freely admit that when it reached 17-6 on Saturday Night during Game 3, I raised the white flag. If they had blown the 8-1 lead going into the 7th, it was disband the franchise time. At the very least, 1978 is erased. I guess Bucky Dent's whole purpose in life has now disappeared, so he might be the first one in the Steinbrenner purge. I'll be honest here: If any team was going to blow a 3-0 lead in the playoffs, I would have guessed it would have been either the Red Sox or Cubs. Do Yankee fans right now wish Kevin Brown had used his throwing hand to punch the wall? And, is it coincidence that they still have never gone to a World Series with Donnie Baseball wearing a uniform? Is it worth risking the defense putting Ortiz at 1st in 3-5 to leave his bat in the line-up? Torn on who I want to see Saturday: St. Louis because it has great baseball tradition and payback for '46 and '67, or Houston just because I Want Clemens. Red Sox World Series historically means 7 games, and I'm looking at Clemens/Pedro on Halloween Night in Game 7 should Houston advance. Have a feeling kids in New England won't be trick or treating that night. But, what I really want is Houston and St. Louis to play the all-time classic 28 inning Game 7 in the NLCS. WFAN will be such a joy to listen to on Thursday. What time is the flight from New York to Tampa for the Organizational Meetings?

Well, the Yankees lost in Game 7 of the World Series last year and there was STILL a lot of talk of Joe Torre being fired, so I would think this is the end of him. So he and Cashman should be unemployed very soon. I agree that not even Mattingly is safe, because although he put together the best HR-hitting staff in franchise history, he didn't teach his guys how to keep the ball on the ground, which cost them in the end.
As for players, don't expect the return of Kevin Brown. Clemens and Pettite were let go for a lot less than this. Mussina and Vazquez are the future of the staff and Orlando Hernandez has reignited his career, so there are three starters that should stick around.
I'm completely expecting a house-cleaning this offseason...along with Steinbrenner throwing even MORE money out there. Especially with Carlos Beltran and Adrian Beltre both becoming free agents.
Kane: Come on! We've had midgets and fire and midgets and Trish as the slutty bridesmaid and midgets. What's not to like? Lita: I guess it still beats anything on "The Bachelor"

Don't forget Jon Lieber, who pitched his ass off twice in the ALCS. They'll bring him back if they can help it. I think they can, I think he has an option for a third year.

Actually, by definition, that's exactly what coincidence is.
Here's a nifty coincidences one of the guys on baseball tonight threw out: Yankees never won a championship when a Republican was president. Looks like it's true for another year.
I've got many character flaws, humility isn't one.
Congratulations, Yankees. You're #1 again....in the annals of all-time sports chokes (well, maybe tied with the 1942 Red Wings). Seriously, this eclipses ANYTHING the Cubs and Red Sox have ever done. This makes the Buckner and Bartman incidents look like chopped liver, since those were random flukes whereas this was four whole games of choking. I'm not sure what Boston fans will enjoy more, possibly winning a Series or beating the Yankees in the absolute sweetest possible way.

Man, it took four years to find one, but I finally located a reason to vote for Bush.
