Paltry and rambling:

New champ Kane arrives to declare the investigative fire still burns even as he brought the title home to the darkside. Taking the belt to the vegetative Taker did nothing to assuage his desperation to find out who did in the Deadman. This was notable as an opening champ rant because it was sprinkled with video montages and nice background music, making it a nifty multimedia monologue.

Drew McIntyre/Dashing Cody Rhodes defeated Matt Hardy/Christian. A hot tag brought in Matt, but a partner collision allowed Drew to boot Matt in the head and get the pin. Christian accepted Matt's apology postmatch.

Dolph Ziggler (with Vickie) beat Kofi Kingston (with McGillicutty) with the Sleeper That Ensures He will Never Be Over Even Though He's Pretty Damn Awesome. Vickie distracted Kofi, allowing Dolph to hit the Zig Zag (a move given a moniker also designed to keep him nestled in the midcard), and the sleeper ended the match.

Big Show defeated the Masked SES member after revealing him as Joey Mercury, and Joey ate the squash fist quickly. So odd to spill that particular bean and put him down so easily. Show donned the mask before decking Mercury and pinning him. SES seems to have lost its zip of late.

Rey Mysterio became the No. 1 contender by beating Jack Swagger in a 2/3 falls bout. Swagger slapped on the Deadbolt ankle lock but refused to let go when Rey grabbed the robes. He was DQed for the first fall. Swagger went back to the move soon after and Rey tapped. He attacked Rey's torso and ankle throughout and, like Matt Striker, got confused at one point as to which weakened ankle to attack. A ringside powerbomb spot sputtered when Rey couldn't hoist himself up, and the pinfall was clumsy as they mistimed the crucifix: Swagger crushed Rey by falling backward, but they rolled Rey into the pin position for the end. Kane chased off Swagger and congratulated Rey. He left the ring but returned to give Rey a chokeslam. Rey evaded and hit the 619 leg slap before skedaddling.

There was also a women's co-champion skit and more from Alberto Del Rio.

I thought the opening promo from Kane was extremely good, probably the best he's ever given, including the announcement of 'Taker's vegetation a few weeks back. Thinking back, almost everyone who has become World Heavyweight Champion over the past year has immediately stepped it up on the mic, other than Jericho who just continued to be as awesome as usual. Even the Undertaker seemed to have a bit more pep in his promos. The only notable exception is Rey who I don't think could even convince me that he was about to go grocery shopping if he read me his list.

The line of the night came when Matt Striker noted that Vicky Guerrero almost didn't make it to Smackdown because of travel issues. After a few moments of silence, Todd Grisham quietly asked "Did they ran out of room in the cargo hold?" I don't think he's ever delivered a line more perfectly.

Next week should bring us a potentially good promo from CM Punk explaining Mercury's inclusion in the SES. Seeing as how Mercury, unlike Gallows and Serena, had legitimate drug problems that he has publicly stated started before he started wrestling, it could make for an extremely good segment, as twisted as that sounds. I realize Matt Hardy is probably about to enter a program with Christian but would it be too much to ask to have Mercury blame Hardy for his pain killer addiction? Matt always seems to step it up any time he's in the ring with a former OMEGA alum and I remember the two of them having an excellent match on Velocity during the Version 1.0 days.

Does the WWE have a Mexican tour coming up? (I assume not, what with their first ever Chinese tour happening next month.) Big Show would probably have insane heat as the asshole who just randomly pulls off people's masks. Props to Striker for making the appropriate Giant Machine reference when show had on Mercury's mask. I also liked Mercury's different reaction to Show's punch, simply crumpling against the giant and then sliding down.

There wasn't just a women's co-champion skit, there was an announcement of a title match for next week! Sure, it's a match that nobody cares about but at least they're hyping it in advance. Plus LayCool's reaction to the announcement was predictably awesome? "Skirt Tiffany?" "There are no skirts in wrestling!"

You also left out Cody Rhodes' grooming tips skit. Finally, instructional videos that the WWE Universe can actually put to use.

I thought Rey vs Swagger was quite good, given the limitations they were working under within the confines of the ankle "injury". The ending sequence was obviously botched but they transitioned without missing a beat, proving that Swagger absolutely does belong at the top of the card. I was surprised that Rey got the victory but it makes sense. SummerSlam is too soon for Kane to drop the title and Swagger really needs to come out on top of a program now. Plus with the show practically in Rey's backyard, he'll mostly likely be insanely over.

Random Factoid: This will be Rey's first SummerSlam in three years and the first ever SummerSlam in which he's not wrestling a Guerrero (excepting a pre-PPV Heat match against Shannon Moore seven years ago.)

I thought the opening segment was great and the final match was really good as well with nothing bad in between.

The idea of music playing during Kane's promos is something that I feel should infuriate me, yet both times I've noticed it, it's seemed to work for him.

I spent way too much time this week examining Vickie's cleavage instead of paying attention to the Kingston/Ziggler match. I feel comfortable saying that in front of you.

Interesting tactics with the SES masks - there's no reason WHY Punk just couldn't put his mask back on, but I suppose once you're shamed, there's no point going back. Immediately unmasking Mercury made me wonder if he was going to be released but I guess it's just a matter of if Punk is unmasked, no need to keep Mercury unmasked as well. I can't say as I recognised him bald...at least, not as quickly as the commentary team did.

His first was against Kurt Angle. (I'm guessing you were thinking of his debut against Chavo, but that was on Smackdown.)

I was thinking the same thing as CRZ about the music for Kane. The multimedia stuff also worked.

I laughed when, in hyping the main event, Grisham said something along the lines of "Tonight is a 2-out-of-3 falls match. If Swagger can get one anklelock, he could go on to Summerslam."

I loved the Cody Rhodes grooming vignette particularly because he wasn't an asshole in it; he was quite sincere in his efforts to help the WWE universe.

Here is my Matt Striker impression during the Big Show/Mercury match: "Giant... giant... the giant... Belgian goalkeeper... giant... the giant... that's Joey Mercury..."

I stand corrected. Apparently I didn't go back quite far enough. I saw the Heat match in 2003 and just assumed he wasn't around for 2002.

He probably meant the anklelock was so devastating if he got a submission off it, the rest of the match would be easy due to how fucked Rey would be at that point.

I liked this episode. Kane is usually the type of champ I'd not care about, but I've come around on him and I am glad he is getting a fair run with the title. I assume he keeps it til Hell in a Cell where he loses to Taker, so that's a decent run.

Swagger/Rey was a great match and I am really digging Cody's new character. YOU'RE ALL SMOKE AND MIRRORS TO ME!

Sing this special song. It's just for you.
I enjoyed Striker ragging on Grisham for grammar until this:

Striker: There is the taped ri--
Grisham: There are the taped ribs.
Striker: *grumblegrumble* ...plural... *grumblegrumble*

Smackdown wasn't bad at all this past Friday.

During the tag match with Hardy/Christian vs McIntyre/Rhodes, I thought Christian would go heel on Matt Hardy at the end of the match but obviously that was wrong.

Kane as World champ wasn't the greatest idea I thought but for the first time in quite some time, Kane has been relevant and assumingly will face Taker with the title on the line.

I guess everyone is unmasked in the SES. When Joey Mercury was unmasked, I did not recognize him at all but the commentators quickly picked up who it was.

The last match between Swagger and Rey was pretty good. At the end, it seemed Kane was going to be a sport about it and congratulate Rey Mysterio but ended up pulling in some heel heat. I am assuming for the next few weeks, Kane will be showing more heelish tendencies until it is revealed that he was the one that put Undertaker in his current predicament.

So far, the angles and storylines are working pretty well but kind-of unsure what is exactly the point of Big Show unmasking and dismantling the SES now.

Either way, pretty good Smackdown with some solid matches.

I would die laughing if next week Tiffany and Kelly come out to show Kane they have proof who took Undertaker out. They put up internet pictures from the wedding, blaming Michelle McCool for putting him in the vegetative state, leading Kane to destroy her, leaving Layla without her BFF.

I'd rather it turn out that 'Taker ate too much pufferfish and put himself in a coma and when Kane discovers this, he's so pissed off at having expended so much time and energy over a pointless search that he turns on 'Taker.

Another reason you shouldn't be shocked is that he comes off looking (to many fans) as someone who really cares about the wrestlers and about the product, and its future.
