Simon Cowell has signed a new three year contract with FOX to remain part of American Idol. However, Cowell made FOX agree to help him establish his own production company as well as pick up another new reality series from him.
Cowell will begin auditions for the third season of American Idol this summer. The show will then start in January.
Simon's cool and all and I'm glad he's not going anywhere, but...but...you mean there's gonna THREE MORE YEARS of this crap??? The world doesn't need another Kelly Clarkson THAT badly, does it?
Through hellfire and makeup, it's...uh...THIS GUY!
Survivor, if you can believe it, has been on for four years and will starts its seventh series in the fall.
So I can surely believe that AI would have an equally long shelf-life.

Q: If you could have one superpower -- the strength of 100 men, invisibility, or the ability to fly -- which would you choose and why?
Michael Vick: Oh man, invisibility. If I was in a bad situation or something or I said something or you know, caught with two girls I could just disappear. I could be gone just like that -- no trouble.

AI Jr's ratings are slowly sinking into the tank - they lost to Dog Eat Dog last week - and there is some concern at Fox that the low ratings through the end of summer and the beginning of the new fall season - where it is scheduled for Tuesday nights - could negatively impact AI3's rating come January. Maybe too much AI product too soon - kind of like "Who wants to be a Millionaire."

I can't say it's reflective of the entire viewing audience, but I have more of an interest in AI than I do in AI Jr, as long as each "season" has a good gap in between. So if most of the audience feels the way I do, then that's why AI Jr's ratings are tanking. Plus I'm not that fond of overbearing, egotistical parents.
I think the reason this "juniors" show isn't working is because they ruined the basic appeal of "American Idol" in the format. Most people watching the show really weren't that interested in a mediocre karaoke contest - in the never-ending parade of drawn-out ballads. Deep down, no matter if they admit it or not, people watched this show because they want to see Simon Cowell make someone cry. Believe that, playa.
OFB hit the nail right on the head. AI Jr's was just a bad idea because it can't employ the elements of AI that make it work, thus the bad ratings. But I don't think it's going to be a drag on AI, because you talking about a different audience.
And remember, the thing that makes reality shows so popular with the networks is that they are so cheap to produce. AI ratings could take a pretty good dip, and the show may still remain profitable (assuming they didn't give Simon a ridiculous amount of money).
Everything that is wrong in this world can be blamed on Freddie Prinze Jr.
Perhaps American Juniors is failing because kids trying to sing like adults is like nails on the chalkboard? That and the name makes no sense. Sounds like a hamburger.
On a nother, similar, note: Has anyone watched "Fame"? I checked out about five minutes of it and was assaulted by the "singing" of a woman who never in a million years would have made it past AI's initial audition process. And Joey Fatone is standing there grinning and saying it was an amazing performance.
Doesn't Fame put more emphasis on a certain 'look' and dancing ability?
As opposed to any other of these shows, which (snicker) put talent first??
