With the Government raiding the medical offices where Benoit last visited, http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=3622162&version=3&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1

Is this going to be a boon for the feds? I assume if Benoit was using this doctor that at least a few of the people he knew were using him as well.

Sounds like a recipe for whole slew of athletes being exposed.

*sigh* I hate to say it is going to lead into bigger things. We have more cans of worms to run thought before we're done with any of this.

I am more annoyed about how they are removing Benoit from WWE's library. If they start editing him out of WWE 24/7 stuff, I will be made. They already removed any of his matches on 24/7 Online. He's been a big part of ECW, WCW, and WWE for the last 15 years or so. They better not pretend like he never existed now.

I hate to say it but, wake up and smell the coffee. We're beyond "they better not." I think their actions have made it abundantly clear that what you describe is exactly what they intend to do. And as you can see from their TV broadcasts, their website, and now apparently their 24/7 online service, they're already well underway to reaching that goal.

Yeah, I read someplace else that the History of ECW episode this month was pulled because Woman was in it. If they make it a habit of editing anything related to Benoit out of the show I'll cancel 24/7. Only reason I'm paying for the channel is to catch old ECW and some Monday Night war stuff...

The man's a child killer. To promote him, especially now, would be monstrous.

Yeah, but you can't pretend he didn't exist. Or do you refuse to watch or listen to any football matches that OJ ever performed in?

Yep. I do. Nor do I watch the Naked Gun movies. For me, it's creepy. It's like people who walk around with t-shirts of Charles Manson. Really disturbing.

I threw out the Hard Knocks DVD yesterday, felt wrong having it around. Can't imagine I'll be sitting around and be jonesing to see him wrestle ever again, either. Not to say he wasn't a great performer, but now it's dirty, it's all tainted.

Not criticizing people who do, but the E is right in white-washing him from their history. He's a child murderer, I don't care that he had a nice looking Northern Lights.

The point is not whether it hampers our enjoyment, the point is: don't treat us like fucking children and pretend he didn't exist. I am all for not selling his DVD, his T-Shirts, his toys and things that are specifically Benoit, but to re-write history is disrespectful to any non-idiot who witnessed the history. Will WM 20 be discontinued? And every 'Mania Benoit ever appeared on? Will he be blurred like the old Attitude logo? Hey, there's a skip button on DVDs, let people decide for themselves if they want to skip Benoit parts.

EDIT: With respect to what you just said, again, that's your choice, which you, as an adult, are free to make. WWE shouldn't be making that choice for someone who does want to see his matches. Where's all that "freedom of expression" shit Vince likes to run his mouth about?

And there's the whole problem with trying to remove Benoit. I agree, do not ever sell another Benoit shirt, or Benoit dvd, or anything which would glorify the man. But if you're going to not show anything in which he or Nancy were involved in, you're basically saying "the last 12 years of American wrestling did not happen." I understand the fact that they removed them for now. For the time being go ahead and pull that stuff. But to say that the Monday Night Wars series has to be discontinued, or showing any Wrestlemania he appeared on can't happen is foolish. Chris Benoit committed a terrible act, one which no one should ever absolve him of. But rewriting history, a history which those of us who watch 24/7, or buy the dvd's of past events are fully aware of anyhow is a fruitless response. Showing WM 20 without the main event wouldn't change the fact we all know what happened. Give the subject some proper grieving time by all means. Never show him on WWE tv programming again. But history is history, and to change it will solve nothing, and only serve as an even greater reminder of who is missing and what happened.

Who should be making the choices on what Vince chooses to do with his owned property?

I support the immediate removal of the current content on the websites and 24/7. It just makes sense this early on. I don't see how anybody is being treated like a "fucking child". However fucking kids should be treated like fucking kids, thats fo sho!

However I think I might actually be able to enjoy a blurred out Benoit match.

I'm kinda surprised that not one person has complained about the daily Benoit pictures at the top of this messageboard yet.

I suspect that they are pulling it all for now, and after some reasonable amount of time passes they will start putting them out again without much fanfare. Right or not, people will want to buy the DVDs still and the WWE stands to make money from them, which is why they exist. Hopefully WWE will do something proper with the profits they DO make, but I don't think we'll hear much about it.

That would probably be the smartest thing to do: Have the profits from Benoit memoribilia go to a trust / charity for the victims of family violence, or something.

But as for the industry-wide side effects... I think this is truly a watershed moment for professional wrestling. And so far, the WWE has grotesquely mismanaged the situation from a PR standpoint. That initial release trapped them into a no-win debate about steroids, while also making them look like they have something they're trying desperately to hide.

I think the danger will come from TWO immediate areas -- and ONE long-term area: Immediately, the danger is government action and the loss of sponsors. Long-term, the danger is a loss of children as fans.

As for the government, most of us can deduce the potential steps the government might take -- from hearings to regulations to subpoenas, etc. As for the sponsors, we could soon witness an Imus-effect: companies no longer willing to associate their brand with Vince's product. (And if the sponsors leave, the TV networks sure as hell won't keep pro wrestling around just for the prestige factor.) If something like those fruity-delicious Skittles jettison the WWE, a domino effect could soon develop.

For viewership, I think wrestling's core constituency is relatively bulletproof -- and I wouldn't be shocked if all this hype about Benoit actually creates a spike in viewers this upcoming Monday. But long-term, I suspect that more parents will now dissuade their kids from watching wrestling on TV or attending live shows. Even those of us who grew up as kids enjoying pro wrestling might no longer feel comfortable letting our own children watch.

Long-term, that could result in a slow, inevitable death for Vince's product....

I watched this last night; Debra was pretty clearly just using this to get her marital problems with Austin out in to the public forum; everything she said was "Steve did this to ME, they knew this was happening to ME, maybe I could have saved them if I spoke up about him beating ME, etc." Really no insight or useful comments whatsoever, just venom over whatever messed up situation went on between the two of them. I don't even think anyones name came out of her mouth except her own and Austin's.

Chyna was on Van Susteren afterwards and was pretty much a train wreck.

Honestly, the days where it was okay for little kids to be watching pro wrestling passed long before this happened ... Hell, I was a kid watching the WWF in the 80s, and I'm not sure it was okay even then (with all the bright colors and "superheroes come to life" vibe that the Rock 'N Wrestling era had, it still boiled down to two guys solving their differences by beating each other up, which isn't really a good message to be sending out to the children).
