I go with Brees or St. Drew as he is known in the French Quarter. He busted his ass for years, got looked over for Phillip F'N Rivers, went to a team that had no hope and won it all. I refuse to vote for coaches and horses.
Roy Halladay? Granted he'd be a better shot if the Phillies had beaten the Giants (and if they won the World Series, he'd be a shoo-in), but he was the best pitcher in baseball this year and had a perfect game and a post-season no hitter to boot.
David Villa and/or Iker Casillas could be candidates for Spain's World Cup victory.
From Big Bad's list I think Brees, Nadal, and Galarraga/Joyce are the most logical possibilities.
It will be Zenyatta. The article will talk about how her defeat only cemented her legacy even more, and how her final run gave her an immortality that a victory couldn't acheive.
I don't follow any sports except MMA, so my only question is why GSP would be in contention for such an award? He hasn't done much of note in 2010 other than beat a guy everybody assumed he would beat anyway. On the other hand, Frank Edgar would be a clear candidate for this.
Lloyd: When I met Mary, I got that old fashioned romantic feeling, where I'd do anything to bone her. Harry: That's a special feeling.
Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...
Originally posted by Big BadIt's nearing that time of year again, so who do you think will either win the award or at least has a good case? Candidates probably include...
* Phil Jackson
* Drew Brees
* Phil Mickelson
* Kelly Slater
* Rafael Nadal (or possibly a co-award with him and Federer)
* Josh Hamilton
* Albert Pujols
* Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce
* Zenyatta
* Jimmie Johnson
* Peyton Manning
* Georges St. Pierre
If we're talking from the standpoint of the true meaning of the word "sportsman", this is the only choice.
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
One other candidate: Jim Thome. He's maybe the most well-liked guy in baseball, he had a nice comeback year and it would be a nice honour for a guy who's flown under the radar a bit in his career.
A number of SI writers contribute 'My Sportsman' articles that basically serve as runner-up mentions, since the story about the real winner is saved for the actual magazine. Some of these essays are already up, so we can presumably cross Halladay, McElroy, Laich, Ochoa, Durant and the Butler Bulldogs off the list.

If it's MMA, and we go to a group of people to decide who wins, regardless of merit the clear victor is...

There's no way LeBron wins a 'sportmanship' award. This isn't like Time Magazine's Person Of The Year, which goes to a person who made an impact good or bad. SI's honour is specifically about sportsmanship.
This post will look pretty funny in hindsight if, like, Kobe wins it.
