Via John Clayton via @BrockandSalk:

John Clayton: Seahawks acquire Charlie Whitehurst from SD for 2011 3rd RD pick, swap 2009 2nd Rd picks. Then sign him for 2 yrs/$10 Mil. WOW

Pretty good upgrade from Seneca Wallace, I'd say. Whitehurst hasn't played any, so they are spending what amounts to this year's 4th-round pick on a rookie QB, but a guy who has redshirted a few times. Good pick-up for the Hawks.

(And I say "4th-round pick" because for every year forward the pick is you take away round from this year's draft, so a 2011 3rd-rounder = 2010 4th-rounder in terms of trade value.)

Um, does anybody remember Charlie Whitehurst? He is not good. I can't believe he's made it this long in the NFL. Good for him, though. Even though he played for a rival college he never really hurt us so I have no reason to hate him.

Wasn't he thinking about signing with Arizona to possibly be competition for Matt Leinart? Guess he didn't do that. But Derek Anderson did!

I agree with Clayton . . . WOW. Coupled with the sign and trade of Tapp, some weird moves in this offseason. Have to give them the benefit of the doubt until we see how things pan out this Fall of course, but . . . wow.

I don't really subscribe to the "picks next year are monumentally less valued than pick from the current year" mindset. Seattle is likely going to be terrible at best next year as well, so you are essentially giving away a Top 75 pick next year. Case in point: The Chargers only had a third round tender on Whitehurst. However, Seattle didn't have a third round pick. Why? Because they gave it away to Philly last year. So now instead of just signing Whitehurst as a RFA, they had to bend over backwards for San Diego. So apparently this new managing group decided to further mortgage their future for a QB without one snap at the NFL level.

Then there's this year. Just mentioning that they swapped 2nd round picks doesn't do justice to the weight of this deal. Seattle moves from pick #40 all the way down to pick #60. Not worth having a meltdown over, especially since they have 2 first round selections, but they had a chance to have 3 Top 40 picks when this team is so full of holes.

There's a word to describe what went down today. That word is rape.

The Seahawks are gambling that a guy they like at 40 will be there at 60. I don't think that is a crazy strategy. They appear to be thinking that Whitehurst is the next Hasselbeck or Schaub, so while I may disagree with that I can't argue with their logic if that's their mindset.

Of course, there was also talk they would try to get Brandon Marshall with the #40 pick, so that's out the window. Anyway, I don't mind the deal from the Hawks perspective, but I'm sure part of that is what seems to be the prevailing mindset that these draft picks are worth EVERYTHING, even to the point of saying people wouldn't trade the #6 pick for Brandon Marshall straight-up. Really? Brandon Marshall is only 25 and has 320 catches in three years. The #6 pick SHOULD be a good player, but the last two #6 picks were Andre Smith and Vernon Gholston. Vernon Gholston! It's not like those two first-rounders the Hawks have are the ticket to the Super Bowl, so using any draft picks to improve your team through drafting or trades is fine by me.

He's taken four, count 'em, FOUR snaps in the NFL, including a touchdown! (nfl.com)

No passes thrown though. I find it a bit weird that a guy who hasn't really done anything since being drafted finds his value going up over that time, but it is what it is. Hard to be too critical, but just as hard to get excited about.

The only thing about it is.. in a few of the divisions, I could take 11 of US, put us in uniforms, and we'd be a playoff caliber team.
