It's official, one day after the team removed Jim Mora as coach.

Sources: USC Trojans' Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks reach agreement on coaching contract

Pete Carroll has reached an agreement in principle with the Seahawks on a deal to be their next head coach, multiple NFL sources confirmed early Saturday morning.

Carroll was fully expected to be introduced by the Seahawks as early as Monday, after the team interviewed Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday morning.

According to league sources, Frazier met with the Seahawks in Minneapolis, satisfying the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview a minority candidate for head-coaching and senior football-operations hires.

Nice of them to interview the token minority, just to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Sad thing is, Frazier might have been the better candidate after the outstanding job he's done with the Minnesota defense. I hope he gets hired in Buffalo or some other place and leads them to the playoffs.

As for Carroll:

1994: 6-10 for NYJ, fired after one season. Lost last six games in a row.
1999: 8-8 for NE after starting 6-2. Fired.
2009: 9-4 for USC with a 5-4 Pac 10 record. Finished 5th in the Pac 10.

I'm just saying...

Forget a few years in between there? Heh, and 8-8 would be an improvement for Seattle. I think it's a terrible idea, but your logic here isn't so good since you're ignoring the fact he seemingly won 10+ games every year for USC from 2002-08.

That stat was more to highlight Carroll's failure as a pro coach, but I decided to throw in the 2009 stat just to show that he wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire last season at USC. It wasn't about to get any better for him there with the hammer ready to fall at any time on USC for the Reggie Bush scandal. And yeah, I can't believe that's still going on, either.

The point is that this is an astronomically bad idea, especially when Carroll's been a proven loser in the pros as a head coach. It doesn't help that Carroll isn't exactly getting much talent to work with in Seattle, either.

And on an aside, can you believe the rumors are already starting up that Carroll wants to pursue Matt Leinart in the offseason?

I have no idea what to think about this. If it works out, cool but if not, holy crap did the organization really fuck it up. If he goes and gets Leinart, start the clock on Hasselback's departure, which I feel is bad business alone but we will have to see...

And having just seen a brief recap of Carroll's 1994 Jet squad as #3 on NFL Network's "Top 10 Meltdowns" . . . well let's just say that I'm still conflicted on the move. Wonder if one of his Pat's teams made the list too . . . Yikes.

To be fair to Pete, he only got one year in New York because Leon Hess thought Rich Kotite was the greatest coach ever to walk the face of the Earth.
As for with New England, he ran a loose ship after Parcells left, but the real problem was the front office was awful with the extra draft picks they received for Parcells leaving, plus Curtis Martin bolting.
And, as a Notre Dame fan, I love it because it mean Pete is gone, and USC must really be getting close to lack of institutional control land between Bush and the Mayo affair.

I didn't really follow the NFL (besides the Bucs and their opponents) at the time Carrol was there, but considering his career record as a head coach is 33-31 (plus 1-2 in the playoffs), I have a hard time believing he is as bad as so many make him out to be. Perhaps compared with his dominance at USC, but that's a pretty lofty standard.

The Jets' record the year before Carroll got there was 4-12 and the two seasons after Carroll left they were 6-10 and 1-15. Maybe the Jets players and management just really, really sucked? And in three years with New England he was 27-21 with two playoff appearances. Like Seattle fans have any reason to scoff at that.

Unlike Bush, Pete apparently has an exist strategy out of a catastrophe that will be the NCAA sanctions that will come this year. He is taking Norton Jr has the linebacker coach as well. I think he will be ok as a coach since their division is going to be fairly wide open if Warner retires after this season. I actually see him drafting Clausen or Golden Tate just to stick to the Irish one last time.

I didn't think it would happen, but it does appear now that the NCAA infractions committee will be meeting to finalize their decision on USC in February. So yeah, Pete's getting out while the gettings good.

I wonder how much impact this will have on USC hiring a new coach? The current rumor is they are going after Jack Del Rio, and in turn that the Jags want Urban Meyer.

This is the craziest offseason for coaching changes I've seen in a long time so I'm not ruling anything out.

I think when they put self imposed penalties on the basketball team preventing them from the tourney this year due to the Mayo situation, that was a sign they were looking for some leniency on lack of institutional control with the Bush situation coming down the tracks.

Del Rio has said no thanks, apparently. Can't say I really blame him or any other high profile coach as going to USC before the NCAA announces what (if any) sanctions they're going to impose would be kinda dumb.

Winner winner, chicken dinner! Lane Kiffin is, in fact, the dumb man USC was looking for. Get this man a cigar.
