Yes, but Goody Two-Shoes did not throw the opening punch. As much as I hate the Yankees, I won't even start to pretend he instigated it.
I don't think it's over yet either.... Francona just got ejected on Damon getting called out at second and Damon didn't look pleased. I think if the BoSox blow this lead trouble is on its way.

I enjoyed the time McCarver/Buck spent explaining to me how wonderful of a play that was by Sheffield (throwing out Damon after Wilson's error). Nevermind the fact that if it occured during a little league game, Sheffield would have immediately been pulled for not calling off Wilson. Then McCarver and Buck, perhaps subconsciously remembering basic rules of fielding, had the following (paraphrased) exchange:
McCarver: Some people may say that Sheffield should have called off Wilson. Buck: Yes...well...SheffieldwasplayingOrtizrealdeep.
Maybe, but I could have sworn I saw Sheff there five feet away while Wilson ungracefully flailed away with his back to the plate, probably waiting nervously for a particular right fielder to call him off. Instead, he drops a tough catch and Sheffield picks up the accolades.
This game will be one of the less than half a dozen in a season where the team with 4 or more errors than their opponent gets the win. And, for the love of God, Leskanic was cut by the Royals. Why do they have to keep rolling him out. Sure, he throws the ball hard. Unfortunately, that just means they hit the ball hard (when he actually decides to throw a strike). But, Mendoza will save us, Mendoza will save us. And, its about f'ing time this team got into a fight. This is the last desperate chance for Boston to wake up from this 3 month coma of malaise they've been in. If this doesn't work, get the life jackets out. Seeing Quantrill get hit hard the past 2 games and seeing Rivera give up hard hit balls, you have to start wondering if Torre burnt these guys out early. It will have no impact on the regular season standings, but, if Quantrill/Gordon/Rivera aren't right come October, the Yankees are screwed.
This is the type of game that can turn a team around. When The Hammer Of God came in, I thought it was over. When Nixon's fly ball was caught, I really thought it was over. Unbelievable. Just unbefuckinglievable.
The bench coach (whoever he is) is a genius; David McCarty jogs MUCH faster than Kevin Millar.

Whatta play!!
Might I suggest the next time there is a Sox/Yanks game on FOX, they would be better served to use a Charlie Steiner/John Sterling broadcast team, as they would be less biased towards the Yankees than Buck/McCarver.
I don't know why, but as soon as Mariano came in, I thought the Red Sox had the game. The fight lit a fire under their ass that even their normal craptastic defense couldn't quench.
Nothin' like seeing the Hammer of God get hammered. When are we gonna re-sign Varitek again?

See... they need to get angry. Something, anything. Just like Sammy needed to get booed. These smack in the face incidents that give a ball club focus is necessary. See: Pistons this post season, Marlins last season, Anaheim before that, Cardinals right now. You can't get away with playing well enough, can hand out that "play 110%" b.s. all you want, but something has to happen somewhere along the line where you decide that winning isn't enough anymore, it's about destroying any sembalance of opposition.
Now if the BoSox can do that, change gears and go from win, to obliterate, maybe they can pull it together, they have the tools to do it. Course it could be that the Sox seem like... a bunch of people who get together to play, rather than a team. And there needs to be cohesion for success. And a good baseball brawl can bring that out.
Iago: Agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY. Maybe all they need to do is look at the Yankees earlier this season. They were just listless for the past couple of months.

Did anyone see the footage of Tanyan Sturtze? He was beaten to a pulp! And Schilling couldn't wait to get in there and get some payback for yesterday. What a winner of a brawl - gotta love when these teams get together.
Pure imagination of course, but can you imagine if there are any playoff games this year between the Sox-Yanks? They could be measured in rounds instead of innings.

Right now Quantrill, Gordon, and Rivera are ranked 1-2-3 for most games in the AL for pitching. With that being said, Embree and Timlin are 4-5 respectively.

That's because Sturtze was trying to apply the HHH "MAIN EVENT SLEEPER" on Kapler.
I just feel that Varitek's going to get some flack for starting a fight with his FULL catcher's gear on. Was A-Rod still carrying his bat when he was attacked?

Nope. He gently tossed it aside before throwing some F Bombs at Branson ( which McCarver tried to cover with "He's saying "Bring it on"). Did anyone else notice Varitek trying to lift A-Rod to drop him on his head before the rush of players stepped in.

Yeah, I noticed, but I think that's the natural reaction when someone has you in a headlock. The thing I found interesting was the speculation on how this would change A Rod's image, ie if he would still be seen as the good guy pretty boy or if he will be seen as a hot head now...
Gees, I spent the whole weekend moving and missed ALL of this. I missed getting to see my least favorite player get mauled by a catcher in full gear. As a Texas fan, I would have loved to see A-Rod getting jacked up. I've looked all over for video of said brawl but have come up empty-handed.
I didn't catch this, but apparently others did (I read it on an NY message board, anyway, and they weren't disputing it), but apparently A-Rod was shouting "suck my cock" from the dugout steps after the NY series sweet last time 'round.
The next fight I want to see is Theo Epstein giving Buck and McCarver the what-for. Perhaps the shaky knee drop. The way they were tripping over themselves to fellate A-Rod was absurd. Varitek was some sort of aggressor, but not A-Rod. Now he's a "warrior!" Ridiculous. Take your base. No mention of Nomar being hit the day before, and quietly and professionally taking his base, either.
I actually prefer the condemned Jamestown Bridge over the Tobin, much less of a wait. Any offense from Pokey, I take as a gift. As long as he fields and stays over .200, he doesn't concern me.
