yesterday Bruce Smith broke the career sack record previously held by Reggie White. Sacks have only been counted as a seperate stat since 1982, and everyone in football says the true career record is actually held by Deacon Jones. What Im wondering is why the NFL with their extensive film library just doesnt go back and count the sacks by Jones? Baseball Statiscians were able to add one more RBI to Hack Wilsons season record by going over old Box scores so I guess its possible. I sent an email this morning to Dr. Z, Paul Zimmerman (any relation Zed?) at SI asking him this. Hes a stat man and I figured this would be right up his alley. if I hear back from him Ill post the link here.
EDIT: As luck would have it an hour after I posted this Peter King answered this question in his MMQB column. Im still hoping Dr Z will answer it.
