I wasnt implying there werent any black QBs in the league then. Moon is a sure hall of famer (I heard that if you count his CFL yards Moon has thrown for more yards than Marino) and Cunningham probably would be too if he had a decent offensive coach early in his career. But still black QBs arent given a chance like they should. Ward was the just written off as small regardless of everything else he did. And thats just wrong. All Im saying is he should have at least been given the benefit of the doubt. I would have liked to have seen him try it. Maybe he wouldve burned out like Schuler or Mirer but at least he wouldve been given a fair shot.

Ward not given the benefit of the doubt? He was drafted in the first round of the NBA draft. I do not think the he himself ever gave the NFL a chance. How many 6'2'' QB are there in this league? Fluite was 5'10'' and it took many years in the CFL to get a real shot. Vicks is 6' even but I think he is a freak of nature (and has alot more skills than Ward had)

According to NFL.com the following QBs are 6'2 or shorter:

Charlie Batch
Jeff Blake
Drew Brees
Mark Brunell
Brett Favre
Jeff Garcia
Donovan Mcnabb
Kurt Warner

Its an impressive list when you consider that the bottom four names are the best QBS in the NFL right now. And Favre will go down as one of the best to ever play the game. So height has nothing to do with it. And the only thing that Vick had that Ward didnt was sick arm strength. And Flutie go the shaft by the NFL early on. He was still getting the shaft in Buffalo. WHY? because the other guy was taller. Thats it. Flutie was winning all the games but his job was in jeopardy because Rob Johnson was taller. How stupid is that?

Yes it was you that said that Ward was not in the NFL because he was back. I was just pointing out that the reason he is not in the NFL is because he was short. Plus I got Ward hight from NBA.com so I am sure that he is REALLY 6'0.

Dude I met Charlie Ward once and his height listing is generous, hes closer to 5'10... Still my point is that height means nothing when it comes to NFL success, and that Ward wasnt given a good enough look because of the bias against black QBs.

Two things:

You can't talk about the best QB's in the NFL unless you talk about Steve McNair. He had a great year last year and no one noticed because the Titans defense was awful. I'm not saying he is Favre or Warner, but at this point he is (to me) just as good as Culpepper or McNabb. He spent years with very limited options at wide reciever, ultra conservative play calling, and home fans that cheered Neil O'donnell over him, yet never once complained or threw more interceptions than touchdowns. Last year, because of injuries to Eddie, the Titans were forced to throw and McNair proved he could do that as well as anyone in the AFC. And he is a fine clutch, fourth quarter guy too, with the best example being the Titans/Rams Super Bowl. Anyway, just my opinion of course.

Charlie Ward, 5'10 or 6'0 or 6'2, deserved a shot in the NFL. Yet not only was the guy not drafted, he wasn't even offered a free agent contract, or invited to any training camps. There is no excuse for that. He won the Heisman Trophy and didn't even get to go to camp. I know the Heisman doesn't make a good NFL player, but come on. College football tabs him as best, and the NFL takes a pass? I don't know if it was race, or height, or the NBA, but I do know that Ward not getting a shot was not fair.

It was the NBA plan and simple. Why would you sign a guy knowing that he is not going to play for you. If I recall he decided to play in the NBA before that draft. As for not signing him as a free agent. There was no point. Yes you could draft him and then have the "rights" to him if he ever decided to play football but if you sign him as a free agent you have to offer him a contract with will go against the cap.

That's how I remember it. He was determined to go NBA, and wouldn't commit to just playing the NFL. I'm not sure even these days anybody is going to take a chance on a quarterback who also plays in the NBA. Quarterback is pretty complicated in the NFL, and I'm not sure it's something you do as a part-time job.

Can we please get back on topic and have some Ryan Leaf hate?

I can't be the only one who was sickened watching the Chargers try to make this work.

Sometimes I miss the sound file I had of him being a baby in the locker room. Anyone have that handy?

As much as I'd love to join in the Leaf-bashing, as a Raider fan I realize that he may be a better option than most of our back-ups - unless Manu's boy works out eventually.

Ok ok Guru, My bad son. Back to Leaf, I know you are a big LA (HA!) Chargers fan, and I know Watching Peyton Manning become the best and Leaf become a joke really pisses you off. But I dont understand is why the hell the Chargers passed on Vick. I think thats going to burn them in the coming years. Especially if attendance falls and they can fandangle a way to get to LA. And if they do you can blame all that on Ryan Leaf.

Pardon the sidenote, but you all forgot the great Doug Williams, first black Super Bowl QB winner, and proudly didn't beat the hell out of the dude who asked "How long have you been a BLACK QB?" which is the stupidest question ever...

While he was laughing it off, you could feel the "man, I can't believe he asked that" vibe...

I remember when Ryan Leaf came out of college, he was adminnistered a personality test. Typically, QB's have a certain personality type, and his results didn't line up with that type. Almost as if he was doomed from the get-go.

rikidozan - I *love* that Lewis Black quote, but I like the frog-gigging (sp?) story even more...
