Few comedians are as funny as their fans say they are. If you've only ever heard people talk about him, Pryor was every bit as good as you've heard. Probably better.
Pryor was so.. I can't even think of a word. He went from stand-up to becomign quite possibly one the most brilliant social commentators on race relations in the 20th century. He si just as much an influence on spoken word as comedy and he really was a brilliant storyteller.
People tend to overstate the greatness or importance of individuals after they pass away when memorializing them. Rest assured, nothing that will be said in this thread could possibly approach hyperbole. There is no exaggerating the legend that was Richard Pryor.

A great loss for comedy and comedians everywhere.
I had to quote this in my LJ, because I couldn't have said it better myself.
I was first introduced to Pryor through my father, once he thought I was "old enough" to hear it. Just incredible. A sad, but merciful, end for him. Rest in peace...if God exists, tell him what's what.

RIP
No offense to those comedians, but in his prime, Pryor was so far ahead of them as to be laughable. And his short-lived tv show was absolutely brilliant. I was lucky enough to have witnessed his work as it happened and even while we were laughing our asses of, he scared those of us in white America with his eerie insight into race in the US.
Is that the opening created by Imus' departure? Locally, I'm curious what the ESPN station will do. They go local after Mike and Mike until DP, and have a local show that starts an hour early in part of the market (an hour before the end of DP's slot)...
