DETROIT -- The New York Islanders have claimed goaltender Evgeni Nabokov off waivers today.
The Detroit Red Wings had signed Nabokov to a one-year contract on Thursday for $570,000 (about $250,000 prorated for the rest of the season). At that price, it appeared likely that another club would claim the 10-year NHL veteran.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said it was "a unique opportunity'' to acquire a goalie of Nabokov's caliber, one the club had to explore.
"We tried something,'' Holland said Saturday. "There was a huge opportunity when you get to sign a player and there's no acquisition fee, you don't have to trade anybody, give up any prospects and it's a low base salary. You never know if it's going to work until you try it.''
Holland said if Nabokov had cleared waivers the Red Wings would have carried three goalies for the rest of the season -- Jimmy Howard, Chris Osgood (when he returns from his injury) and Nabokov.
Now, I have never once even noticed the Islanders' existence. Their run in the early '80s literally ended right when I was born. That changed today. SCREW YOU ISLANDERS. You didn't even need him!
3:30pm EST EDIT: And of course because the entire Islanders situation is so bad, Nabokov Will Not Report to the Islanders. (nhl.fanhouse.com) So great job guys, annoying the piss out of another franchise AND a player for.....what benefit, again?

It certainly shows you never noticed their existence. If you did you would know they have one of the most injury prone goalies in history in Rick DiPietro, which means they could always use a good replacement aka they need him.
Solution? Start losing. Until then don't complain about losing out on a waiver claim.

Last I saw the Isles were running 3 goalies, the rookie one of which just recently got hurt. So they're down to 2, like most teams. It doesn't matter if DiPietro is exactly like Matt Stafford or Carlos Guillen, he's still an active goalie on the roster.
Your homerism is showing. You know that if Nabokov had signed with say the Blackhawks and the Wings had claimed him, you would be calling it a very smart move. It's not like the Wings are hurting record-wise (1st in the Central divison) or goalie-wise (you're complaining about the Isles having 3 goalies, but so does Detroit- MacDonald, Howard, and Pearce being brought up).
It'll all work out. You'll get your goalie and the Isles will get some crap pick or something. But we need the publicity. Especially at work, anything that helps out the Isles get attention helps us. I wouldn't wish you to lose money you really need, so please don't do the same to me and my co-workers.
I didn't want Detroit to sign him, so I don't think my opinion would be different if the teams were changed.
Admittedly, I don't have much sympathy for the Fisherman, given all the poor things that have done lately, including taking away someone's press credentials.
(although I admit it's not a cut and dry situation, since Botta used to work for the team and there's probably a lot of dirty laundry behind the scenes from both sides.)

That's okay, DiPietro is only under contract for....10 MORE YEARS?!

They could always make him the GM, it worked before!

Actually, the Blues had two players sniped from them. Marek Svatos was claimed by the Predators (a team at the time that had a worse record) and Kyle Wellwood was claimed by the sharks (a team with a much better record then the Blues). The rules kind of suck for the KHL players because every team gets a chance to claim them, not just teams that are worse. Basically, a team is removed from the order of waiver claims and every other team has to pass in order for them to claim that player. It sucks in the Blues case because they have been killed with forward injuries (Oshie, Perron, and MacDonald, 3 of their top 4 scorers) were all hurt this year (only Oshie has come back), they put in the work to bring the guys over here and they got neither of them.
