now, i love VU, and i must say..... who in that band greenlighted this?

Most likely Lou Reed. I mean, they probably threw a nice chunk of cash at him. And you know he has to be laughing all the way to the bank at the braintrust that thought up this idea.

Am I the only one old enough to remember Honda motorcycles (I think it was Honda) ads with Mr. Reed posing next to one of their trykes as he says "Why Walk?." (In reference to his "Walk on the Wild Side" song) He's been "selling out" for years (not that I had a problem with it).

I just hate when you see the same damn car commercial with Fine Young Cannibals' "Good Thing" or "Everyday People" or whatever over and over and over and over and over again and then the damn song gets stuck in your head and you feel like cutting your ears off so you can't hear them anymore, but you realize it's your own damn fault for sitting in front of the tv so much.

Yeah, that felt good.

No, I too remember those ads. My personal pick for true oddness is a local rent to own place using The Housemartins' "The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death" as a backer in their ad for rto furniture. I spit coffee all over the floor when I heard that one.

Remember his American Express ads? I still have my lil' Lou counter standee that used to hold AmEx applications. That dates back to 1987 or '88 I think. The man is a gigantic whore.

What I find most hilarious about this thread is that everyone is getting so uptight about "Blitzkrieg Bop" being used by AT&T when it's been used in commercials for well over a decade -- I can remember Bud Light using it for TV ads in 1991. "Joey and Dee Dee had integrity" my ass.

The use of Modern English's "Melt with You" in a Burger King commercial.
The Buzzcock's "What do I Get?" in a car commercial.
The Smithereens' "Blood and Roses" also in a car commerical.

And my new least favorite use of a song in a commercial:
The Ramones' "Blitzkrig Bop" in a cell phone commecial, when I all ready HATEHATEHATE cell phones.

I'm hoping it'll get all the young whippersnappers to go find the good stuff again. And that can't be bad.

HA! For a while, I thought I was the only one getting sick of this punk pop shit.

Don't ever think that. Anyone with a brain is sick of that. *Plug* The link in my sig leads to a band that will restore your faith in agressive music that still sounds good without being pop-sounding shit *Plug*

Just a question.....did WWE have to pay U2 and Coldplay for their use of their songs in the Triple H and Kurt Angle comeback videos?

Over 1350 posts and still never a Wiener of the Day!

In the issues of December 16th, 2000 to November 10th, 2001, we may have given the impression that George W. Bush had been legally and duly elected president of the United States. We now understand that this may have been incorrect, and that the election result is still too close to call. The Economist apologizes for any inconvenience.

Presumably... does the Angle video plug Coldplay? Yay for licensing.

Okay, here's a question that disturbs me (since I'm asking it). TNT's been running ads for some hideous chick-flick, Prince Charming. (Maybe not hideous... I dunno what it's about... maybe someone not wanting to be swept off her feet... WHAT-EVA. Not really relevant to the question.) The question: What's the song in the background? I KNOW I heard it before, on the radio...

"America may have some problems, but it's our home. Our team. And if you don't wanna root for your team...then you should get the hell out of the stadium. Go America." --Stan Marsh, South Park

Personally, I'm perplexed by the medley from The Who's Tommy in some allergy medicine ad...Celebrex, I think. From "It's a Boy" (I think) to "Pinball Wizard" to "Listening to You," and back to "Pinball Wizard." Not to mention the Southern/zydeco variations...disturbing, but a reminder of how damn good that soundtrack is.
