Hmm...

ESPN - Report: 2010 Pro Bowl to precede Super Bowl

MIAMI -- The Pro Bowl will be played one week before the Super Bowl in 2010 and both games will be staged in Dolphin Stadium, a person directly involved in the decision told The Associated Press on Monday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not announced the move, but Hawaii's governor and Honolulu's mayor both confirmed the situation later Monday.

"While I am disappointed the Pro Bowl likely will not be played in Hawaii in 2010, I respect the NFL's decision to play the post season all-star game in the same city as the Super Bowl, one week before the Super Bowl, on a one-year test basis," Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle said in a statement.

It's not a new notion to have the game moved up to take place between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. The NFL has discussed it multiple times in recent years, and commissioner Roger Goodell told the AP last month that having the game precede the Super Bowl would avoid a "somewhat anticlimactic" ending to the season.

This has the potential to be a very bad idea. The idea of the week before the Super Bowl is to give the two teams playing a week of rest. It doesn't quite work if you have some of the best players of those two teams playing in the league's All-Star game during that bye week. And that's without even thinking about the chaos that could ensue if some of those stars get injured during that game, right before the Super Bowl.

No sir, I don't like this.

Anecdotally, it seems that most of the potential Pro Bowl players that are Super Bowl teams beg off from the game.

I'm not a big fan of playing on the same field, in case they tear it up or it rains or what not.

Also, it's the Pro Bowl. Anything's better than what they do now, which draws absolutely no attention or anything resembling interest.

I'm guessing if your team is in the Super Bowl, the alternate takes that player's place.
The thing they are going to have to change is having the losing coaches of the conference title games coach the Pro Bowl. Having a couple of week break and then going to Hawaii is one thing. Having to get on a plane to the city with the Super Bowl after falling one step short of getting to the Super Bowl could cause some of them to go completely postal.

There's been rumors to this extent since the beginning of this season, in a last ditch effort to make the Pro Bowl somewhat relevant and to add an actual activity to the pre-Super Bowl week.

I think this gets sold to the participating players as "you were going to the Super Bowl for interviews anyway, and now you're done a couple weeks early." Meanwhile, the newtorks can spend most of the broadcast talking about the Super Bowl, and people might tune it of habit.

The funny thing about no players from the 4 Championship teams going is funny since the Pro Bowl is coached (for now) by the Championship Game losing coaches.

(you didn't make it to the super bowl. consolation: a week in Hawaii.)

I wonder if our new Prez has an opinion on this, being "from Hawaii."

Since this is the league *without Bud Selig as commish, I'm certain Super Bowl participants will not play in the Pro Bowl under this set-up. It's probably worth doing, just to give media something to do with the extra week.. and the telecast is just that much more of a chance to hype the big one.

I also see the coaching as a bit of a problem, but since it's an exhibition - why not go with retired coaches? Who wouldn't want to see Don Shula match wits with Mike Ditka??
