"The outdoor ad, sponsored by the militant animal-rights group PETA, shows a stock head shot of a pretty young woman on one side and a "smiling" pig on the other, along with the slogan Neither Of Us Is Meat.
That's a reference to the case of Robert Pickton, the Port Coquitlam, B.C., pig farmer who is charged in the deaths of 15 women. Pickton is expected to go to trial late this year or early in 2005. "
To anyone not from B.C. Robert Pickton is basically suspected of kidnapping prostitutes and killing and burying them on his farm. These ads make the KFC stunts pale in comparison.
Jesus. I knew PETA would sink to any low, but this is ridiculous. And comparing the eating of animal meat to the eating of human flesh is a considerable stretch, to say the least. Drawing a link between the two and implying (as PETA director Bruce Friedrich did) that people may have accidentally engaged in cannibalism is absolutely outrageous.
But to be honest, my mind has tagged everything PETA says as gobbledygook, so I can't get too pissed over the whole thing. If someone lies all the time, after awhile you assume everything they tell you is a lie, and you get less mad about it because at least they're conforming to expected behavior.

Enh. PETA is the world's largest crew of Hyprocrites anyway. I highly suggest anybody interested check out the Rereun of Last Week's Bullshit at 10:30 Eastern on Showtime Thursday. Learn fun facts, including why PETA euthanizes over 1300 animals a year!
Grimis just posted - almost to the word - exactly what I was going to post. Scary, no? That episode of Bullshit should be on In Demand, if you have the service (and Showtime). That show actually made me hate PETA more, and I didn't think that was possible.
Anyway, this whole campaign's fairly tame compared to last year's Livestock Farms = The Holocaust ads. Talk about contempt for human life...
Look, I'm all for animal rights. I'm an animal lover. I've given money to the ASPCA and, if I figure it out, I've probably given hundreds of dollars over the years to the Animal Friends shelter where I bought my cat. I think fur is murder. I'm strongly against the use of animals for the testing of cosmetics. I think the punishment for intentionally killing an animal that you don't intend to eat, or isn't for the purposes of documented medical research, should be much, much more severe.
PETA doesn't give a fuck about animals. PETA cares about publicity. The best thing to do, when the next one of these crazy campaigns rolls around, would honestly be just to ignore it.
""[The word] liberal derives from the Latin 'liberalis' - of freedom, befitting the free. Synonyms are progressive, broad-minded, unprejudiced and generous; while antonyms include reactionary, narrow-minded, intolerant and stingy. Accordingly, a political liberal is an open-minded person who considers all the arguments before drawing conclusions. A conservative, on the other hand, clings to one position and sees no reason to entertain diverse viewpoints because he already has his mind made up. Are mainstream media 'liberal'? I certainly hope so." -~Forrest Wood~-

While I totally agree that PETA sucks and even think the government should investigate them based on what Penn and Teller came out with, I have to say you missed one reason to kill animals.
Deer hunting, while I've never done it and have zero desire to do so, is definatly a neccesity. It would be a huge problem if we didn't let the rednecks go out and shoot a few of them every year. Not a fun fact, but a fact anyway. Yeah they eat what they kill in some cases, but the overall point is just to thin the numbers.
But I would also add I'm the type of guy who's not exactly upset about people killing ducks or racoons and such. It's not like they are endangered species and really it's a friggen duck. As long as we aren't wiping out a species, I really don't care that much.
As far as penalties for animal cruelty and intentional killing of animals, while it varies by state, they are usually pretty stiff. Watch any of the animal cops shows on Animal Planet and you'll see what I mean. In most states, animal cruelty is a felony crime, carrying a penalty of up to $1000 per offense and up to 2 years in prison. Unfortunately, one of the exceptions is Florida, where I currently make my residence.

Heh, the people of PETA would have a field day with me...where I work, we sell nothing but meat. Pork, chicken, beef, turkey, ham, and ribs. Sure, I'd consider myself an animal person, but damn they taste good.
As my mother once said, the true meaning of PETA is People Eat Tasty Animals.

See, now I think PETA are a bunch of loony, psychotic, fanatical retards and they probably think I hate animals because of it. Yet, reading this article makes me want to shoot this guy in the kneecaps, take a dump on his face and slice off his (assumedly) tiny genitalia with a blunt butter knife. Hmm. Funny.

I definitely have something to think about now when I eat my salads. Was my lettuce grown in a humane way? Were 1000, sometimes 2000, heads of lettuce crammed into one container for transport with little room to move around? I may have to boycott salad, which is no problem for me....

Personally I think I'd rather see HIM get place-kicked. Or curb-stomped, whichever's less costly to the state. I'm more of a cat person but that kind of pointless cruelty just demands an ass-kicking.
I could've sworn I'd heard about PETA's "neither one of us are meat" ads several months ago, back when they were first finding out about the scale of this guy's actions. Maybe it was just a press release...

I know their German chapter did something similar to capitalize on the press surrounding the guy who ate his Internet date.

That's so inaccurate you could write for the NY Times. It seems you have no understanding of what sentience is. It is defined as "consciously perceiving" and/or "having sensory perception", which many animals do. A plant (generally speaking) has no brain, and without a brain feeling pain is impossible. Pain is carried through nerve-endings called nociceptors, up the spinal column and into the brain where it registers. A plant lacks all three of the physical components necessary to process pain. Without a brain, a plant has no awareness that it is alive. Comparing not watering a plant to skinning a cat or dragging a dog behind your truck is like comparing standing up your date to beating and raping her. A more apt comparison might have been comparing not watering a plant to not feeding an animal, but even that would have been a stretch.
Now, I eat meat and have no intentions of swearing off it. But we're talking about animal cruelty here, which consists of more than the gassing or shooting of an animal which is more or less painless. PETA is an extremist group and sometimes goes over the line, such as in the case of this ridiculous ad, but I think anyone who wears fur when there are synthetic materials which can keep you just as warm is a fuckhead. People who test perfumes and cosmetics on infant animals? Fuckheads. People who skin cats, torture domesticated animals, which have comparable intelligence to a two-year-old human child are fuckheads, and several of these people go on to torture human beings. There is an established link between animal torture and serial rape/murder. If you're going to eat what you kill, fine. If you want a head to put on your mantle cuz you were too stupid or incompetent to earn a degree or a trophy of some kind, you're a fuckhead. So as far as where PETA stands on those issues, yeah, I agree with them.
Call me biased, as I have worked with animals that have been abused, but it's not funny and it's not a joke. People who boil water and throw it on their animals deserve to go to jail. They deserve worse. These people are garbage. Kill animals humanely, and then eat them. I don't laugh with glee at the thought of a dog that had to be put to sleep because it was beaten so severely with weapons by its owner that it could barely walk. If that's funny or irrelevant to someone, this person is fuckhead.

Are you intentionally trolling?
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.
