Gary Payton was arrested after failing an on-site field sobriety test on the San Diego Freeway near Brentwood in the early hours of August the 28th. After being sited for Driving Under the Influence and unsafe backing he was released into the custody of his wife Monique.
Payton is scheduled to appear at the downtown Los Angeles court on Oct. 15th, less than two weeks after the Celtics training camp is set to begin. Whether he will be in Boston is another mystery as the aging star has threatened to retire if he is forced to play for the Celtics.
This new development comes at a time in which Payton is still waiting to stand trial for his role in an alleged altercation outside a Toronto club in April 2003.
Considering that GP (currently) plays for Boston, there's gotta be joke in there somewhere. :)

Please tell me that this fool did not try to back up on the damn freeway/expressway/highway/turnpike/whatever the hell they call it where you live. We call it a freeway, dammit.

How about "Hell, having to play for the Celtics would drive anyone to drinking!"? Thanks everybody!
Well, he WAS good friends with Vin Baker down in Seattle ...

For the benefit of Non-SoCal people - the San Diego Freeway is Interstate 405, and it is no where near San Diego.

I think it's a bigger joke that Isiah used most of the Knicks MLE on a certain alcohilic former Celtic.
The main problem remains that Payton, with agent Aaron Goodwin acting as mediator, still has not given the Celtics official word, though Goodwin has reportedly told the team chances are good that Payton will show up next month.
"According to a league source, the results of the chemical test showed that Payton's blood alcohol level was so close to the legal limit of .08 percent that driving under the influence charges will likely be dropped. Payton, whose wife Monique was in the car, told police that they were returning from dinner, where he had two drinks. The act that got him caught - attempting to back down an on-ramp to the San Diego Freeway - was the result of Payton's desire to avoid a traffic jam."
OK, I'll make this one response before this turns into another one of those lovable "New York vs. Boston" threads.
You're being WAAAAAAAY too nice about Layden's pickups. Eisley, Shandon Anderson, Gimpy McDyess, et al weren't even good enough for that "mediocre" title. We would've had Nene if it weren't for Layden. He also passed on hometown boy, Ron Artest, in the draft while he was still available for Frederic F'N Weis.
Zeke's had to rebuild the team while cleaning up Laydens's mess (even though the owner, James Dolan, is the real perp of the Knicks' downturn). The contracts are ridiculous but at least they have SOME form of an upside with the low age and all.
And this thread is about Gary Payton, damn you. :-D
Leave the New York/Boston stuff to the baseballers.

Just having some fun with you.
And BTW, low age? Half the Knick roster is over 30. Anyway, back to Payton; how the hell did this story go almost 2 weeks before it was reported?
Thank you, Knicks, for passing on Artest and allowing him to be drafted by the Bulls-- for without that, Artest might never have been traded to the Pacers. He'd still be owning everyone defensively, but I'm glad he's on our side.
Actually, if you look at the '99 Draft, there were some good names on that list. Frederic Weis was arguably the most boneheaded draft pick the Knicks could have made, but they didn't just pass up on Artest. They also picked Weis over current NBA contributors such as James Posey, Dion Glover, Jeff Foster, Devean George, Andrei Kirilenko, Scott Padgett, Calvin Booth, Gordan Giricek, Lee Nailon and Manu Ginobili. (And how the hell Ginobili fell to fuckin' 57th is a great question).
Anyhoo... this thread's about Payton, right? Yeah, he's a douchebag. Anyone here surprised by that? He should have just shut the hell up and played for the title when he had the opportunity, but instead he was a non-entity throughout the playoffs and noticably in the Finals. So screw him, let's put him on a team that won't contend. What's next?

I got Brand in my fantasy team and his stats have been very useful. He missed a game today with a bruised hip, which sucks. Hopefully not getting an Allstar nod will piss him off and he'll get even better numbers.
