I'm watching the Pack/Seahawks game on ESPN while I pack up my apartment to move, and I'm hit with how much I've missed Pat Summerall. Yes, he's lost a little bit, and he's not as quick witted, but I love how he doesn't jam what's happening down your throat like a lot of guys do today. He'll sit and wait for a play to develop. I think he got a bad rap since he was with Madden, who a lot of people seem to dislike with a passion, but I'm really enjoying his pre-season work.

I noticed this last week. He just sounds like football, if that makes any sense.
Well, I agree and I disagree. Summerall is better than a lot of today's younger announcers, who seem to have the mantra of 'create a storyline for the game that the casual fans can follow along with' jammed into their heads more than WWE announcers. Cris Collinsworth, who I generally like, is the worst at this: he'll decide in the first quarter that a receiver is having a bad game, and then it doesn't matter if that guy goes onto catch 3 TDs and get 120 yards.
But Summerall is just a bit too out of touch. Lots of missed player names, missed plays, etc. He's still good, but he's lost more than a step.
Summerall seemed better last night than at the end of his Fox tenure, when he was just sullying his well-earned reputation as THE voice of the NFL. A comeback is not in order, though.
Although anybody sounds good as the play-by-play guy in ESPN's 3-man booth team. Theismann and McGuire are CRAP CRAP CRAP. Stop your f*cking spats in the booth, you morons, NO ONE CARES. Make a different intelligent observation and point that out, instead of arguing the opposite of what the other just said.
God, I hate ESPN's announce crew (except for their normal what's-his-name on the play-by-play). Hurry back, Al Michaels!

I disagree, but I without Mike Patrick in the booth (get well soon, MP!) I'd imagine Joey T and Maguire would just run amok over the whole thing. I'd rather listen to the ESPN three than just about anybody else.

It's got to be a matter of personal taste because I find myself watching most ESPN games with the sound turned way down because of Theismann and McGuire. Mike Patrick is tolerable, but I find the other two to be among the very worst announcers currently working. I'd put them at the same level as Lee Corso or Dick Vitale, people who once knew the game but have since reduced themselves to parody level because the shtick is easier than actually trying.
