So let me see if I've got the chain of events correct.

1) The Big Show is the WWE champion
2) The sky falls
3) The earth cracks open
4) Hell freezes over
5) WWE begins a downward spiral similar to the dying days of WCW.

Is that about right? "Oh my god, I'm never watching this show again as long as that fat jerk is champion" - does that seem correct?

Well before you damn WWE and Paul Wight to the eternal fires of hell (again), I ask you to look beyond his size and look at a couple other things you may not have thought of before.

1) The Big Show Is The Most Believable Champ To Casual Fans

"WHAT? MOST BELIEVABLE?! Brew, have you been eating paint chips again?!" Actually, no (although I hear they're quite tasty). How easy is it to believe the Big Show cannot be beaten? Very - just look at him. He's the Big Show. He's not just big, he's A Human Wall. He's Colussus. He's Juggernaut. He's over 7 feet tall. He's legitamtely 420 pounds. And, contrary to popular belief, he's in pretty decent shape. I'm not saying he'd win a bodybuilding contest, but considering how gargantuan Show is (something which is tough to really appreciate on TV, but you sure will if you see him live), he's certainly not a Bastion Booger. Show is so big, you can put him on TV as a champ and a person who has never watch wrestling before would go "Holy SHIT, NOBODY'S gonna beat THAT guy!" It's the age-old, tried-and-tested story - who can beat Goliath?

You see, when you're the size of the Big Show, you're ALWAYS credible, no matter WHAT the booking does to you. You can be beat by Jeff Hardy one week, and the next week you can throw The Undertaker off a stage and instantly transform yourself into an unstoppable giant. Can't really say that for anybody else.

2) Show Deserves Another Shot

People point to the accidental injury of Lesnar as the main reason for the Show's championship. And while this may have brought about the change, it's not like WWE didn't have a choice in the matter. If they didn't want Show to have the belt, he wouldn't have it - it's as simple as that. But Show has stepped up his work and proven that he's deserving of another shot. The chair shots Show took from Lesnar on the SmackDown before Survivor Series were VICIOUS, and Show deserves full kudos for taking that kind of beating. Not only that, but Show did his best to help Lesnar toss him around at Survivor Series in a match, while short, was very memorable - a match which will do nothing but INCREASE, not decrease, Lesnar's popularity.

3) HAAA, Lookit Show Bein' An Ass!

Show's character development has come a long way in a short while. His first show as champ on SmackDown was classic heel stuff. Taunt the face when he's not around, run like hell when he shows up. Get assaulted by the face, and whine and complain that he can't compete tonight. A 500-pound Human Sasquatch takes ONE chairshot, and he can't compete?!? AWESOME. Show is really working his ass off to be a classic heel - a heel that is truly despised by the fans. Having Heyman with him is icing on the cake. Heyman coming out with the belt on was a masterful stroke - every wrestling "purist" who saw that must've gone NUTS - which, of course, was the point.

Somewhere down the road, Show will drop the belt in a very dramatic way, and his title reign will end - and that will likely happen sooner rather than later. But Show is certainly doing all he can to show he deserves to be where he is. I'm not saying that Show is the greatest worker in the world. But, he's busting his ass to entertain us, and whenever David beats Goliath (whoever that David may be), it'll be a memorable moment for all. And isn't that what wrestling's all about?

You're only saying this 'cuz you're 6'4" and over 350 pounds. You giants have to stick together, I guess. Good points, Daryl.

Excellent essay, Mr. Brewer. I think it was a well-thought and logical piece. I also happen to agree with you. Don't listen to that hater over there in Maryland. Mary Land. What kind of a wussy name is that?

I am just kidding, DrOp. Ok? Ok.

Big Show is very entertaining right now. Not only does he deseve credit for this, but the much abused writers should get some too. The Big Show/Brock story was very good for the last month and looks to continue strong into the next ppv. It has helped both guys get over in a big way.

So good job writers and good job Big Show.

Everything is going to be just fine.

Those are my LEGIT numbers, though - my wrestling numbers would be something like 6'9" and 450 pounds, thus making me Big Show's illegitimate son. And besides, who's gonna stop us? WE'RE GIANTS!

Whoa, I don't think I'm buying what you're selling.

1. In wrestling, reality is what you make of it. And for years the Big Show has been one of the biggest jokes in the industry, beaten by pretty much everyone you can think of, not appearing on PPVs, and even being called a huge dissapointment by Vince (on camera no less). And then suddenly it's "Hey, Show's a credible contender!"

I'm not saying that he couldn't be rebuilt, but it would've taken months of going through people.

As far as the Big Show being in shape, wasn't he sent to OVW at the WWe's behest to lose weight? Has he lost any at all? Sure doesn't look it.

2. So the Big Show deserves the title because he (a) took a beating, and (b) co-operated during a match? Neither one of which is a compelling reason to put the world title on the guy to me. Besides, didn't the sheets say Brock went a little nuts with the chair because of Show legit injuring him. And after what happened to Hardcore Holly, wouldn't you do your best to co-operate with Brock?

3. Point three I don't disagree with, because the angle leading to SurSer was as well done as humanly possible. And if the WWE really wanted to keep the belt on Brock, there's a dozen ways they could have done so.

Look, Big Show having the world title isn't a biblical disaster. It's dissapointing to me as a fan because Show still blows goats in the ring, and I think having him be the first guy to pin Brock was a bad decision that the WWE is really going to regret.

Great article Brew..

Joe_G, 'reality is what you make of it'..exactly.
Wight kept saying all his career that he needs to focus and only then is his performance up to par.

So now we switch to kayfabe and look at the angle. A focused Big Show under tutilage of Heyman becomes a threat overnight...why? Focus! They kept hammering on this, he is focused, he is going for something.

And still..to the average viewer there is this HUGE MOFO who dwarves EVERYONE..he *IS* impressive to behold and thus can get away with holding the belt just like that..just as Brew said.
