Ok, forgive my ineptness. But since when is there a fourth number in a team's record.

I DO know that it's Wins-Losses-Ties-??....but what's the fourth one? Solid effort?

Basically. Wins in overtime, I believe.

With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.

Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms

However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.

No, the fourth column is OVERTIME LOSSES. You get a point for LOSING.

First season that rule was in effect, Carolina never lost in Overtime. Buffalo lost several times. Buffalo finished 8th - without those points, Buffalo is not in the playoffs and Carolina is.

So from the getgo, I hated that rule.

Losses in OT.

You get 2 points if you win in overtime. One point for the tie after regulation, not a point for losing.

You lose the point if you pull the goalie for an extra skater and the other team gets an empty net goal.

Here is the Note from the NHL rulebook concerning losing the point:

Note 5: A team shall be allowed to pull its goalkeeper in favor of an additional skater in the overtime period. However, should that team lose the game during the time in which the goalkeeper has been removed, it would forfeit the automatic point gained in the tie at the end of regulation play, except if the goalkeeper has been removed at the call of a delayed penalty against the other team.

This is the only way to lose the point.

I didn't know about the "pulling the goalie in overtime" rule, that's good to pull out at a party.

I'd guess that the only time you would risk losing that point would be when you have to pull out every stop to get the extra point(ie. the one point is the difference between making the playoffs or not).

I could see doing that for the reason you said and/or you had a power play in order to turn it into a 5 on 3.

It would be cool to see the goalie pulled for the first couple of minutes and as the guy comes out of the penalty box the team on the power play makes a line change and the goalie comes off the bench with the team and we go back to 4 on 4 hockey.

You got a problem with Hull??

hehehe...

The problem with the NHL is they hired a basketball guy to run the league. What were they thinking....

You got a problem with Hull??

Certainly! The plus sides include liquor at all the stores, and cheap rent. Downsides include EVERYTHING ELSE.

I still tried to land in Hull anyway... Nobody would take me. It must have been all the English I spoke, before I re-discovered my francophone roots.

The problem with the NHL is they hired a basketball guy to run the league. What were they thinking....

Hey, they're finally getting it right... He's trying new things and I like the fact he's tinkering with the rules until something clicks. The faster paced games this season have been fantastic.

And the Sens still blow.

cfgb: how could you forget the peeler bars on the plus side of the Hull coin? Famous the world over, they are, and deservedly so...

As for the 1 point for an overtime loss rule, it makes perfect sense in the context of a 5 minute period. After playing 60 minutes of hockey and squeaking out a point, teams just weren't willing to take chances in order to generate offense when they stood to lose the point they'd worked hard for. This way, teams can focus on offense (but not too heavily, hence the goalie-pulling rule) and potentially actually generate overtime wins.

Granted the difference hasn't been dramatic since the introduction of this rule, but I like to think a few more games end with a winner and a loser than before. I certainly find overtime much more enjoyable this way.

I like the 4 on 4 aspect... I just cannot accept giving a point to a team that did not earn it.

After baseball teams play 9 innings, if the game is tied, they fight to the death. If they want to open the offense up a little bit, they COULD eliminate the ties and play 4 on 4. It would be a rare night with the speed that moves at to see a game go more than 2 OT periods.

Of course I was opposed to naming a team the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and it promptly made the team millions off merchandise alone, so what do I know.

I really don't like the "one point for making it to overtime" rule. It just don't seem right.

At the same time, the old way of "we've made it to OT so let's just play for the tie" was in dire need of fixing.

The solution? As with all of our problems -- look to Europe! The Futball way of getting rid of too many draws is to give THREE points for a win and ONE for a tie. A team who is 7-8-0 would have 21 points, while a team who is 5-5-5 would have 20 points.

When you are in a playoff race, you had better go for the win, overtime or no. The teams you are racing with certainly will be. A team who settles for draws during the season would be hard-pressed to make the playoffs. Damn sensible, I say.

Wait. How many points do you get for just a straight up win?

Three points for a win. Regular time or overtime. Always three points. A win's a win.

Imagine how it would open up the third periods and overtimes in the second half of the season. The Washington Capitals are tied in the third period. They look up at the out-of-town scoreboards and see that the hated Carolina Hurricanes have just scored in their game to take the lead. Washington knows they can't just settle for a tie ... they would drop two full points behind in the hunt for their playoff spot. They gotta get another goal, and pronto.

Fuck, it would rule.

Grrr...I was hoping that one of these teams would NOT be ahead of the Devils in the standings. I was also hoping that the Devils would beat the Flyers last night too. THANK YOU MIKE COMMODORE FOR DEFLECTING BRASHEAR'S SHOT PAST BRODUER.
