Also TMBG are a bit too diverse and confusing for people. They`re not easily pidgeonholed as anything other than rock music. They seem to be pretty happy with what They`re doing nowadays. Recording, touring, occasionally doing TV and commercial work.

I'll have to make the obligatory Imogen Heap plug. She's one of the greatest female vocalists I've ever heard, but I don't know anyone who's ever even heard of her. And, out of the 15 or 20 people that I've had listen to her songs..I still only know one person that didn't like them.

But, all hope is not lost! Hopefully the Frou Frou album coming out in April will get her some fame.

Actually I have heard of Imogen Heap. Someone was handing out 2 song sample cassettes of her a few years back at my college. I listened to it, and was not particularly moved one way or the other, but I'd give it another listen if you can throw a rec or two of her best songs to listen to up on the board.

There, I feel better now.

Anyone else remember For Squirrels? They had a semi-hit maybe 6 or 7 years ago with "The Might K.C.," but half the band promptly died in a van accident, which sucked hard. Their CD "Example" was really good.

As for TMBG, who here has the new album? Another quality effort from TMBG, IMO. And I don't see why a couple of those songs couldn't make rock radio. "Drink," for example. Or maybe Cyclops Rock.

I remember For Squirrels. They were really big in Gainesville when I lived there. After I moved back home I heard about the accident, it was really sad.

WHOO-HOO!!! Thank you all for the They Might Be Giants love. Makes me feel not alone in the world

I think SS hit it right on the head. The Johns never hit is big but the did enough to find a devoted following and they absolutely love what they are doing.

I also find it funny that many people have heard of TMBG but don't realize it. I enjoy hipping folks to the fact that they did the theme to Malcolm in the Middle.

"Bound for the Floor" is still one of my all-time favorite songs.

I was actually hoping it was Local H and not Triple H making a comeback on Raw.

Even though they're huge up here in Canada, the Matthew Good Band should be able to make it big in the States, especially since they kick Nickelback's ass.

Q: If you could have interviewed Marvin Gaye, where would you have proposed to meet and what would you have asked him?

A: I would have met anywhere as long as it was before his father shot him. I would have asked him, "Hey, don't you think there's some chance that your father might shoot you? To death, I mean?"

Now that would have been truly cool. Especially if they followed in their usual Halloween tradition of playing shows as some other band. Local H returning as Triple H on Raw would have been the moment of the year for me

Mink Car is quality, I have 2 minor complaints about it.
1.) It doesn`t have the flow of a usual TMBG album. Not that Their albums aren`t diverse to begin with, but something`s off about the running order. Even Flans said as much in a recent interview.
2.) A lot of the songs were previously released, either online or somewhere else (another mix of Bangs is on the McSweeney`s project, Older is on the Malcolm soundtrack AND Long Tall Weekend MP3 album...). It doesn`t take away from the enjoyment of Mink Car, but it was slightly disappointing at first.

Yeah, this is true. I always find myself putting it on shuffle. I was a little disappointed about all the previously released material as well, but at least they had the kindness to give us different versions, for the most part. What's your favorite song on that album? I'm a huge fan of "Hopeless Bleak Despair."

My favourite song on Mink Car is "Man, It's So Loud In Here." First time listening the album, it took me a while to stop repeating that song over and over. My second would probably be "Hovering Sombrero." Other than "Mr. Xcitelment," I enjoy the whole album tho. The slowed-down version of "Another First Kiss" was cool, and while I had not heard the other version of "Bangs," I had heard "Older" from the Long Tall Weekend release, so I was kind of tired of it.

I was just disappointed in Mr. Xcitement. I expected a collaboration between the Johns and Doughty to have been more to my liking, but hey, I can't like ALL of their songs no matter how hard I try ;-)

I'm listening to a TMBG CD-R of all of my favourite stuff of theirs right now. Something around 150 songs or so, and I didn't even put some of the live stuff I've mined Morpheus for on there. I need to add those to finish the disc since most of Their songs are 2-3 mins it only filled up half of the disc with mp3's.

Have you heard Your Mom`s Alright? It was a promo/MP3 release and the other Doughty/TMBG song that was recorded. Are you a big Mike Doughty fan? He`s one of my favorites too, I`m psyched to see him in a few weeks in Philly. I highly recommend his solo album Skittish.

My favorite songs off Mink Car? Bangs, MISLIH, Mr. Xcitement, and Cyclops Rock.

TMBG`s Philly show last fall was unfortunately the same night as U2, who I already had tix for. But I did get to meet the Johns that day, plus I`ve seen Them eleven times.

TMBG: "Ana Ng" rules.

The Jam
XTC

Oh yeah XTC. Somewhere in any list of my top 20 songs ever "Dear God" will always have a place of honor and respect.

Curious: how come? I mean, it's a good song and all, but I always kinda thought its "edginess" was completely overrated.

Or maybe I'm just a "Making Plans for Nigel" kinda guy. ;-)

I've always liked "Dear God" but it isn't my favourite XTC song. "The Mayor of Simpleton" "Across the Antheap" and "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" are more to my liking. Of course, that's just personal preference and "DG" is certainly a fine song.

IMHO, the Hoodoo Gurus is another band that should have broken bigger over here too. First I heard of them was the "Magnum Cum Louder" disc when I was in college. I immediately became a big fan and began hunting down their older albums. They're one of the few bands I liked who stayed great throughout the time I listened to them and finished things off with their best album ever "Blue Cave." Has Dave Faulkner done any solo stuff? News on them is few and far between.

"Dear God" isn't even their best song from the Skylarking-related stuff for me. I'll take "That's Really Super, Supergirl". I like Black Sea better as an album, overall, for whatever that's worth.

For bands around today who deserve to be more famous than they are, I think Quasi should be at least a little more known than they are. Failing that, the roxichord deserves to be recognized as the greatest non-lethal musical instrument ever created.

I just have a special fondness for songs which say something which I know I want to say but just can never quite get the right words for. I heard it first when a friend who is a huge XTC fan played me a couple of their albums. I liked almost everything I heard, but that once song, when I heard it I was all like "play that one again. Now play it again." And as I listened to it I said "that's what I meant to say. That's so exactly it." I don't know about edgy or if it pissed people off when it came out, I just know that it hit something in my brain when I heard it. And that doesn't happen too often. I'll often hear something and feel impressed with how someone puts something, but rarely does it make me feel an identification with the idea.

And Dr. Unlikely, I have to ask how any musical instrument can compare with Split Lip Rayfield's tank fiddle (a bass constructed of a wooden neck, one nylon string and a truck's gas tank)?

There, I feel better now.

Well what about Joe "King" Carrasco and the Crowns? The farfisa organ is extremely underrated. They should have been big, but alas, were not.

Given that I'm a Doughty fan, a Soul Coughing fan, a WFMU fan AND a FMA fan, I can't believe I missed these links on Twitter. This is really good - albeit entirely different from his other albums.
