Okay it's just passed the half way point of the year, what were your favourite movies so far. (allow some leeway if it's a foreign movie or indy film with limited release in 2001 and pushed more in 2002 which happened to a few of my movie picks) Limit yourself to 10,

1- Frailty - I know people who hated it. I thought it's the best movie of the year. Old fashion thriller, great mind games and swerves (one see it coming the other I don't)

2- Insomnia - Pacino was amazing, Hilary Swank was beautiful, Robin Williams was ultra creepy. I love the moral problem that plays out

3-Brotherhood of the Wolf(french)-looked like one person wanted to do a kung fu film someone wanted to do a horror/monster films, So what do they do they mix it up and make a real fun over the top movie. With the leads looking like Rock and Triple H who by the way no sold death a few times. Some places say released '01 but it got released in N. AMerica in Jan '02 so I'm counting it

4- Panic Room- I'm a Jodie Foster mark. Movie was shot beautifully and I cared for the Jodie her daughter and one of the robbers.

5- Salton Sea - This might be the best "guy" movie out there so far this year, Val Kilmer is one of those cool pretty boys that I actually like. A very hip film

6- Undercover Brother- Surprise movie of the year, it was funny without being mean. The ads looked like another dumb misogynistic movie. But it wasn't Sistah was the strongest character in the entire film. Conspiracy guy is my favourite side-kick. Best comedy of the year

7- Changing Lanes - Ben Afflick was in it and I didn't hate him. Well he was playing the biggest prick dickhead lawyer so it goes with him well.

8- Storytelling - my artsy fartsy film of the year so far. Two interesting stories in one movie that has nothing to do with each other. Still pretty interesting film. Again debate over it's 01 or 02 because of the limited release I'm going 02 because that's when it got released on a wide scale (which for this small film wasn't much of a release)

9- Y Tu Moma Tambien (Spanish) - Wow an coming of age film with immature teenage boys that actually had some heart. 2 guys at a party ask the wife of a cousin(they didn't know when asked) they never see out to a beach that doesn't exist. When she finds out her husband is cheating on her she takes the two teens on there offer.(again like all foreign movies debate if it's 01 or 02)

10- Powerpuff girls - it's my list and I put them in if I want them in.

Interesting year so far. NO movie really stood out above the rest. the top 4 or 5 are pretty interchangeable. On any day I could flip them because they are all pretty even.

Bottom 5 there are another 5 films that could be put in that spot easily, it's been a pretty decent year for movies. Especially American films seeing that I like foreign films and only 2 are in my top 10 and one of them is the over the top brotherhood of the wolf.

I haven't seen all movies that came out this year. I'm sure this list isn't 100% accurate because there are movies that I heard amazing reviews that I just haven't gotten around to it yet and didn't put on the list. I'm consistent movie goer all year round but I go hard during Oscar time on things I miss.

I don't get it, everyone loves rats, but they don't want to drink the rats milk?

i can't argue with you because i saw none of those movies...

my guess at a top 3 would have to be

Death to smoochie
Goldmember
Spider-man

because those are the only 3 movies i have gone to see all year...

i just wait for the dvd, and see it for free, 4 days before the regular tuesday release

I don't there have even been 10 films that I would call good to warrant making a top ten list. Unless you count all of the "oscar" films that were technically made last year but I didn't see them until January or February.

Top movie for me of 2002, though it made its festival debut in 2001 was Kandahar. A truly amazing film set in pre 9/11 Afghanistan, many of the things which we would later come to realize, and some of the things which manifested themselves in the jet planes used as missiles, were shown in stark relief in Makhmalbaf's vision of a country gone horribly awry.

For a lighter fun movie to put in a top 10, Monsoon Wedding was a kaleidoscopic film of color and song and love and family and secrets and fun. Sure the plot is sort of like Father of the Bride with a soap opera twist, but everyone in the film is invested with an earthy reality that makes them all believable. This is the foreign film to see if you're usually afraid of foreign films.

god i hate monsoon wedding
on the OPENING night, i had stupid people come in to my video store and ask "Where is monsoon wedding? i can't find it"
"It just opened in the movies"
"No sir you are wrong, i saw an ad for it and i want to rent it"
"No, you are an idiot, you said you couldn't find it and we don't have it, please leave or i will call the police and have you removed for illegal tresspassing"

this happened for 4 months

only had to have 2 people arrested for not leaving

no, really. i have to county police officers as regular cust's and they told me about a law that states that anyone who enters our premisis is at our discretion. If i ask them to leave, they must. if they don't i can have them served with a tresspassing notice that bars them from the store for 1 year, and is renewable if i want it to be

Yeah, Randel is my hero

Riki, I can only paraphrase Booker T here, and say "Hate the moron, not the movie!" ;)

And you still have a job at this place? If you do, it's still in business? Sheesh. That's just some STELLAR customer service. I'm surprised word of mouth hasn't spread amongst the customers and the local populace to the point where they don't go there. You'd think that's what would happen. Heck, that's downright draconian of you. So what happens if you tell the county police officers to leave and they don't? Do you call the cops on them? Is your manager aware that you do this on a regular basis because a customer argues with you?

Something tells me your story is utter and total bullshit.

Wow, how can some of you actually like insomnia. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, so I can't go into too much detail, but let's just say the "turning point" in the movie was about as believable as Schwarzenegger in Batman & Robin. And let's not start on that weak ending...

They don't make movies that rate more than 3 stars, IMHO. I think film is dying, personally. Hollywood killed it.

so you're telling me that good cust service is arguing for an hour about a movie I know isn't released and they won't accept isn't released?

they get angry that i tell them that their husband/brother/mother/aunt is wrong and the movie isn't out

when they start to raise their voice, i ask them to leave. when they do not comply, i call the police. I don't get paid enough to have shouting matches because they refuse to accept my answer.

And my manager does know, because he had to call the cops on a cust that refused to pay lates and another cust had to restrain the man because he was about to throw punchs at my manager.

And if you want to take this to a personal level about sad lives, just say the word, and I can take this up a notch, but i'm sure CRZ wouldn't appricate it.

if you want to test this out, go to your local blockbuster, ask them where Goldmember is, refuse to accept their answer, start yelling and carrying on like it's the end of the world, and refuse to leave when they ask you to, and be surprised when you have to be removed by police.

I want to go with Minority Report. And I want to add
Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise. It might have been from 2001, but it is a real good movie and hardly anyone has seen it.

As an aside, I worked for years at Tower Video and have never seen the police called on anyone. Personally, I wasn't paid enough to chase after people who didn't pay late fees. working in a comic store sounds like fun. :)

Correction: Vanilla Sky is a VERY good movie, and a lot of people have seen it, as it grossed over $100 million.

Since when does a film's box office equate to quality?

* How much money did Phantom Menace make?
* How much money did Gladiator make?

Fill in the blank:

There's _______ born every minute.

No one ever went broke underestimating _____________ of the American people.

The Stupidity.

Funny how both of these quotes apply to some of the content in this thread, eh?

I think a more appropriate "Gladiator" question is "how much money will the sequel make?"

So, did you guys *like* Gladiator or not? I think it's one of my all-time favorite movies. I liked Insomnia, too, but in an Al Pacino-was-so-good-I-didn't-mind-the-implausibility kind of way.

My favorite movies so far this year have been The Bourne Identity, Minority Report, Panic Room, and Spiderman, and that's pretty much it.
