Pro-Trump--which is to say, anti-democracy--protestors have stormed the Capitol building and occupied both chambers of Congress. At least one person has been shot.

The President has posted a vague tweet saying that people should support the Capitol law enforcement and "stay peaceful", but has not spoken publicly and does not appear to be doing anything to protect the Capitol against invasion.

It's heartbreaking seeing the US turn into a Third World country.

Random Thoughts About Today:

Please take these as what they are: my opinions. Feel free to agree, disagree, debate, flame, etc. etc.

The 2020 election was a giant referendum on Trump’s response to the corona virus pandemic. It sucked, so Trump lost.

There have been pundits who have claimed that if Trump’s response to the pandemic hadn’t been so horrible, or if he had been less transparently narcissistic, he might have won the election. It absolutely breaks my heart to admit this, but I agree. Or at least been much closer and he would have had a real reason to challenge the election.

He lost because of the pandemic, NOT fraud.

He is now insane, living in a fantasy world of his own making.

I was re-reading what I wrote 4 years ago. And I was openly wondering if Trump was the Republican party’s last chance or if Trump was going to kill the party.

I honestly don’t care about little gritty details about the size of government or the tax base. I tend to think that after it trickles through government and congress, it all washes out to be about “moderate” anyways.

I care very very much though if I think our president is a white supremacist. And I do. He certainly acts like one.

How many other people are quietly out there who think like I do? How many other people are forever going to never vote republican ever again?

Also, when it comes to the security that should have been surrounding the Capital building.... I smell a rat.

I agree with a bunch of this. I don't think Covid response is why he lost the election, but fraud was certainly NOT the reason he lost.

I'm already curious where the Republican Party goes for a 2024 nominee. If it is anyhwere in the Trump tree, it's doomed to lose, IMO.

While he has signs of being a White Supremacist, I tend to think he is too full of himself to assign him to any other group. Nothing he does is done for any reason than for himself. He needed to be told 'no' a long time ago and learned how to properly react to that feedback.

I can't wait to see how/if/whether/when changes start to happen in this country.

I was worried that he would re-run in 2024. Hopefully that idea is dead in the water now.

Yes, the pandemic wasn't the only factor, but I still think it was the nail in the coffin for many people.

Except me. I voted for the first time ever in 2016 to help keep him out of office. Hated his narcissistic guts long before then. Had to use a damn absentee ballot this year with Husband because of the pandemic. Husband is one of the people who would die if he ever gets covid-19 because of kidney transplant/lowered immune response.

Good luck with the health.

Assuming he hasn't died due to his seeming health issues, I would bet that he runs in 2024 to the dismay of Republicans. If he becomes an Independent, it will guarantee a Democratic victory, as the Trumpists wouldn't vote for the Republican candidate over their guy.

Oh, I think he will try and run. No doubt in my mind. His campaign starts in 14 days

We still disagree about pretty much everything but understand that shouting each other down and racing to be the first to play the hurt feelings card only leads to a place that's even worse.

Hmmm. Here are some correct predictions from that thread.

Not only suggested it, but lobbied the governor of South Dakota to make it happen.

Probably wouldn't have happened if not for the pandemic, but still.

Some bits of wall have been built, but basically correct.

I wouldn't say it caused the recession, but the deficit was ballooning even before COVID and now it's astronomical.

Trump's been banned from Twitter and Facebook and has been slowly sliding down the ladder of social networkry all night. (I don't BELIEVE he's attempted to create an account here yet.)

(Ten years ago, a "parody" account would have quickly been created - and then later, just as quickly deleted by me.)

Have you issued a statement stating that he is banned from your platform yet?

Seems to be the thing to do at the moment.

I think many people are assuming that *finally* he'll just go away. (Y'know, like all *sane* former presidents generally do.) I have the horrible feeling that that won't happen, & we'll still have to deal with the news giving him all the airtime he wants, as he continues to incite sedition & treason -- only now without even as much as any threat of 25th amendment. I'm just appalled by the whole mess.

I hope you are wrong but fear you are right.

CNN may never mention his name again, unless there is a clear threat or a clear foible. FOX, on the other hand ...

I think there's another very likely possibility, which is that he'll just slowly fade. He'll spend four years fighting off bankruptcy and jail and civil lawsuits. He'll try to fundraise and hold rallies and it will be less and less effective and more and more fringe. He'll lose all his friends and protectors because he has no influence anymore. People will get tired of his shtick, if not his politics.

There is some truth to this and it might be the way it goes.
