Alexandria’s church tower collapses, taking down the town’s east wall, and instantly, walkers pour in.

In the ensuing chaos:

-Maggie barely escapes to higher ground, where she is eventually spotted by Glenn and Enid from a distance. Oh, right, last week we learned that Glenn survived the horde of walkers that descended upon him and Nicholas.

-Three different groups are holed up in one house: Rosita, Tara and Eugene hide in the garage, Morgan and Carol get to an upper floor, and Denise sits across from the wounded Wolf in the basement. Carol hit her head on the way to the house and may be concussed. Carol, of course, is furious because Morgan is likely hiding a very bad person in the basement alive. She plays a little possum with her condition, and when Morgan isn’t looking, races down to the Wolf in the basement, ready to kill. Morgan gets there just in time and a standoff with Carol ensues. After some philosophizing, Morgan and Carol struggle. Morgan ends up knocking Carol out legit. The Wolf takes advantage by knocking Morgan out and taking Denise hostage, just as the garage crew make their way in. And the Wolf escapes with Denise. Facepalm!

-Rick, Deanna, Michonne, Carl, Ron and Gabriel take shelter in Jessie’s house, where Judith and Sam are already. Deanna was bitten along the way and is taken to an empty bedroom. Second-floor-recluse Sam freaks out about everything he witnesses. Ron corners Carl alone and tries to kill him (as revenge against Rick). In their struggle they shatter a door window which causes walkers to pour into the house. The group secures themselves upstairs, where Rick announces that they all have to use the time-honored trick of smothering themselves with walker innards to safely pass through the walker herd congregated downstairs. A weakened Deanna, sadly, has to be left behind, who goes out on her own terms – by shooting walkers while the rest make their way out of the house. Everyone seems to be doing OK, except for Sam who starts freaking out again and calling out to his mom. Facepalm!

Finally, in the post-credits first-half-of-the-season epilogue (or second-half-of-the-season prologue or however you want to refer to it), Daryl, Abraham and Sasha are en route back to Alexandria when they are stopped by a motorcycle gang, the leader of which demands all of their belongings. Because everything belongs to Negan.

A lackluster show for me. The walls are breached again -- this time by the barely restrained walker horde -- and ... one person dies. Offscreen. Most likely. Not a great payoff for that dire threat.

Deanna handing the keys to Rick seemed unnecessary, given that everyone falls in line behind him anyway. And he planned to take it over the first night they arrived. Everything's coming up Grimes: He is now the undisputed leader of Alexandria, and he has a new gal/family.

The Wolf walking out the door with Denise seems highly fatal. If he could simply leave, so could all of them beforehand.

Glenn could easily save Maggie by yelling at her. A number of the walkers would follow the noise, and he's on the other side of the fence from them. Win-win.

Also, Morgan must now die for giving Carol the Bossman Slam.

A lackluster mid-season finale for a lackluster season.

This season has felt like a giant stall waiting for the rumored (now confirmed) Negan introduction, with a bunch of either loose ends (i.e. The Herd, The Wolves invasion), or the did he or didn't he that they dragged out for 4 episodes, that was even more unbelievable than being in a world overtaken by zombies.

I do not read the comics, but I do get the impression they're trying to stretch what they can out of the source material that they have left.

I felt it was ok. Nothing ground breaking til the post-credit scene. I like Morgan, but Carol was right, the Wolves are dangerous and need to be taken out. Carol's speech to get that point across was awkwardly stupid.

Even Constanza wants to kill the kids. Having said that, Carl has grown up, so much that it is pretty amazing considering how four years ago, he was the one putting everyone in danger. It was a bit annoying to have Glenn stare at Maggie and not say one bloody word. I do like the re-use of disguising themselves in Walker parts.

Negan...fuck.

I said before that this show should have ended when they got to Alexandria, and I think this season pretty much proved me right. There's just nowhere left for the stories to go. Oh no, the walkers breached the walls and there's a lunatic doomsday cult after them and the team has been broken up. That's completely different from the midseason finale of season 4, when the walkers breached the walls and there was a lunatic doomsday cult after them and the team was broken up. Anymore, I'm just watching because the actors are so good, but they really just don't have any material to work with. This setting's played out.
