The sixth season premiere used non-linear storytelling to throw us immediately into total chaos. After discovering a canyon filled with a shit-ton of walkers not too far from Alexandria kept at bay only by a porous man-made big-rig truck blockade, Rick devises an intricate plan to shepherd the walkers to a place far, far away. We kick off the season with Rick ready to walk through a dry run of the plan when all of a sudden the blockade starts to crumble. No time for a dry run, this is not a drill! Without being fully prepared and without the full confidence of the Alexandrians, the shepherding was a complete success! No, not really. Just as Daryl, Abraham and Sasha were about to lead the herd off into the sunset, the unending blare of a truck horn attracts the majority of walkers back to Alexandria! The Wolves?!?

The episode alternated between black-and-white stylized flashbacks that ended where the full-color “present” timeline began. An effective device to keep viewers on their toes and guessing, but the sound of the horn at the end of the episode would have shocked just as much if the story was completely linear. Utilizing this technique showed us newly-arrived Morgan interacting with the group as if he had been there the entire time. Thankfully, the flashbacks gave us the necessary historical interaction between Morgan and his old friend Rick. Morgan is a changed man compared to the last time Rick saw him and Morgan might say the same about Rick. Rick is a man who will now kill you without a second thought if you are a threat to the group’s survival. Morgan will now spare your life if he can, as long as he can disarm the threat you pose. Rick might spare your life too, but not out of mercy, but because he thinks you’re too weak to survive. We need to keep an eye of the interaction between these two this season.

Elsewhere, Abraham tries to grow close to Sasha to make sure she still doesn’t have a death wish, Nicholas wants to redeem himself after his life was spared by Glenn, whom he tried to kill, and Morgan sees right through Carol’s weak and meek homemaker act.

Hell of a start to the season. The super-sized premiere might’ve been accused of dragging if the storytelling was linear.

Great start to season 6. Looking forward to next week.

You quickly touched on my favorite part of the show - Morgan knowing exactly the type of person Carol is. Don't get me wrong - I love Carol. But after so long of being able to get by on her "aw shucks" facade, it is about time someone was able to see her for the person she really is - fully in control of the room and situation at all times. I am more into that side plot than any others.

Rick saying Carter was too stupid to survive is a heel move. Rick saying Alexandria won't bring anyone else inside is a heel move. Rick is in control only because he came out on top in his subplot with Jerk Husband. That guy gets cocky, accidentally kills Reg, and Rick puts him down, "proving" to everyone in Alexandria that Rick's philosophy is right. Morgan's influence is to lead him back from the dark side, and it may not be enough. Morgan and Michonne clearly had trouble with Carter's death, practical as it may have been. And if Morgan thinks Carol can take command, Rick might be expendable. If Rick loses the confidence of Michonne and Daryl (who argued for saving outsiders), he's a goner.

I can't say I'd be sad to see him go. His arc is one of slow collapse, made more desperate by his failing efforts to remain safe. Lori's gone. Shane's gone. Herschel's gone. The prison's gone. He lost Judith for a time. Terminus was a deathtrap. Alexandria has mysterious Wolves. I don't think he even talked to Carl this episode. He's one walker bite to Judith away from being the Governor. Unless Morgan can save him, I don't know if he's long for this show.

He said that 'someone like that' wouldn't last long in this world - basically implying that either Carter would come around or the world would kill him off. That's pretty much exactly what happened.

Let's also take into account that Rick's comments were made AFTER Carter was plotting to kill Rick and had a gun to Eugene's head. I don't see how Rick is the heel in this.

Rick never said they wouldn't bring in anyone. He told Daryl that he shouldn't go looking for people anymore. He's pretty much right about that as well.

Rick's heelishness comes from his delivery, not in whether he's right. He's nearly dead right about everyone and every thing regarding Alexandria's ability to survive in the post-apocalypse. They can barely go one-to-one with Walkers while everyone else had to scrape, crawl, and fight to make it this far. Alexandria is wholly unprepared for the things - Walkers and people - that are out there.

I will say that Rick's plan seemed EXTREMELY fragile. It seemed like there had to be a better way to clear out that quarry.

Since Rick has been in Alexandria, he's talked about those who have to be weeded out for others to survive. He's also said aloud he'd take the development from the residents if they didn't fall in line. Rick had already decided Carter will die, but he wouldn't waste the bullet on him. (Would Rick have killed Carter if the latter had threatened one of his closest people, instead of Eugene? I think so.)

For story purposes, Carter earned his death by threatening Eugene and Rick. Karma caught up. But it also gave Rick a convenient excuse to get rid of yet another weak Alexandrian. We're seeing Glenn do the same thing with Nicholas. The only person we've seen Rick offer to train is Jessie and her kids, and his motives are muddled.

Rick's big plan has already killed one Alexandrian, and it was the guy who questioned him in the group meeting (not everyone would know he plotted against Rick). If this scheme results in more deaths, Rick's on shaky ground with the residents, and Gabriel could look like the guy with the right idea.

So did Gabriel blow the horn?
Or was it the older son of the jerkwad Rick killed?
This was an excellent beginning to the season.

I think you can make a case that the ying-yang, "darkside Rick versus good Rick" storytelling is getting a bit tired. I don't disagree.

He didn't decide he would die - he decided he would let nature take its course. Those are very different things (even if the result is the same).

I really do think that there's a direct analogy between Alexandria and the presumed safety and entitlement of a suburban upper class. You have people like Carter, like Aiden, like Nicholas - who think they know everything by the virtue of their position, and who are certainly not going to be told what to do by some redneck sheriff and his jolly band of misfits. In this world, the Alexandrians are of little use when it comes to surviving outside their own protective environment - and, even worse, they don't know it - a point made all the more obvious when the group tried to take Noah home.

I think her predilection for low cut shirts make Rick's motivators very clear.

I think it's Pete's jerkward son who blew the horn and I hope Carl wastes him. I don't think Gabriel is that dumb (this week).

As do I. He has kept alive most people who would or should be dead by now. You could say if not for Rick, they would all be dead.

Daryl was a loner until Rick got to him. Daryl either ends up a killer or dead.

Glenn was clueless. Rick got him to where he is today.

Carl would be dead for sure. Shane might have killed him!

Carol would never have become the person she is without Rick.

Maggie, Herschel and his family never survive the farm without Rick.

Abraham probably offs himself when he would have found out Washington was not realistic.

Micchone was totally alone. Eventually someone with a gun kills her.

If I am in Rick's group, I am standing right next to him nodding my head in agreement. The man walked out of a hospital to a zombie apocalypse, found his family, went insane, came BACK from insanity, found shelter for his group three times (farm, prison and Alexander)saved his people from cannibals not once but twice, saved his people from the Governor not once but twice, saved them from insane police, survived countless medical/food runs.

Has he had some questionable calls? Sure, but is there any one else throughout this entire show you would follow more than him? No one.

Rick: we need to lead a herd of 10,00 zombies down a road

Me: I'm in

Rick: We are going to attack a heavily armed town and save our friends.

Me: I'm in

Rick: I am going to take over this town and train the weak. If they can't cut it, then they are gone.

Me: I'm in.

But the one question that needs to be answered is this:

Who took Morgan's protein bar?

I not only loved Morgan calling Carol out, but I loved Carol's deadpan look in response. It's amazing how far Carol has come - I immediately worried for Morgan's health the second he brought Carol's eyes on him. Don't fuck with the Mama Bear, Morgan.

No idea. My guess is "no." Even so, it's pretty far from "barely able to make back its rather modest budget," unless they've spent $15 million on advertising, which seems like a lot.
