http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl-suspends-brady-4-games-deflated-footballs-214203672--nfl.html

A few comments....

1. Brady's appeal will absolutely get this suspension busted down by one or two games

2. This is absolutely a case of being punished for the coverup rather than the crime itself.

3. It is laughable as hell that the NFL has under-suspended any numbers of players for any horrible real-world offenses yet Brady getting four games for doing something that probably every QB in the league does.

After over 13 years and 6800 posts, was finally named W of the Day on 3/21/2015. It's now all worth it!

Shame that Belichick was able to get off. No way you can tell me that a control freak like him didn't know that was going on.

And here's the other side of the argument for Patriot defenders:

It's crap. The NFL has once again turned something fairly simple into a circus. Of course we aren't talking about concussions or domestic violence so maybe that's part of the point.

Whoever has been advising Brady through all this has done an awful job as well. He should have no commented everything. At least he went 37-50 with 4TDs with properly inflated balls against the world's best defense.

I bet he could have gotten under inflated balls by the officials without doctoring them after the fact ... and yes I do think he was probably up to something shady but because of the epic botch job by the NFL I have a hard time with any kind of suspension or loss of draft pick.

The AFC East still isn't good, relative to the Patriots. You're telling me we get to see Handsome Jimmy get some real game action for four weeks without Brady getting injured to cause the situation? I'm in.

Also, Ryan Grigson ENJOY THE EIGHT TD PASSES TFB IS GOING TO STICK UP YOUR ASS WHEN HE COMES BACK. I can't wait. I'm giddy.

This. If nothing happened I think the Pats have a good year but have Super Bowl hangover. Come out sluggish for some games. But now, Brady is pissed. And he is going to want to put a hurting on the NFL.

The reason the Jets, Bills and Dolphins kept quiet during all this is because they know he is coming back mad and no need for him to come back MADDER at them for saying he cheated.

Life is hilariously cruel.

I like the speculation that Kraft was asked to drop it in exchange for a reduced Brady suspension. That makes sense to me.

There was no "controversy". Let's be honest, NFL and ESPN have a symbiotic relationship and, as Easy E says, controversy creates cash.

On Payton, the NFL told them they were being investigated and they still didn't put a stop to it. That's where the "ignorance is no excuse" came from.

And what are the 5 times Belichick cheated?

And if one of those "cheats" was that the Pats taped walk throughs and/or practices, then you don't know what you're talking about.

He totally did it, but OTOH the rule, ensuing penalty and entire way the NFL handled it were all stupid, so I'm glad it got lifted.

Also means he gets to play against Dallas, so yay justice!

Ian Rapoport reports that Commissioner Goodell will not attend the season opener.

I wonder how many times the commish (any commish) has skipped out on the season opener?

My poor Steelers, it's gonna be a bloodbath.

This one bothers me, for some reason the other half dozen have not

You have a judge that spit directly in the face of a CBA. Smith and the NFLPA agreed to the NFL (i.e. the Commissioner) to have judge and jury over these things

It's Article 46 of the CBA. The one NFLPA is trying to weasel out of...man

We have 7 cases now where a judge has overturned the CBA. Fucking SEVEN. How many of you are in a union? Think about what this means. If a contract that your union negotiated is worth shit and your union reps constantly undercut the company, then why would an employer sign one? Let's go back to 30's. And I don't even like unions

Everyone seems to be saying the NFL lost here. No, Tom Brady gets to play and their biggest drawing card is on the field Thursday Night

Who lost was the NFLPA because the next time a CBA (in like 2 years? 3 years?) comes to the table the NFL, and that means owners too, are going to dig in their heels and force a work stoppage. And we all know what that means, at least those who have lived through a few

The only one with an opposing NFL voice will be that idiot Robert Kraft, who paid a fine and suspended employees because he thought the NFL would go easy. Sucker. And a guy like that don't take to kindly to looking like a sucker

Luckily it's been deflected to the NFL for now, which is fine. I'm ready for some FOOTBALLLLLLLLLL

Article 46 just gives the commissioner the right to have final say on appeals. It's been in the CBA long before Goodell was around. It doesn't give him the right to trump up charges to try to railroad a player.

The Court is fully aware of the deference afforded to arbitral decisions, but, nevertheless, concludes that the Award should be vacated. The Award (Goodell decision) is premised upon several significant legal deficiencies, including (A) inadequate notice to Brady of both his potential discipline (four game suspension) and his alleged misconduct; (B) denial of the opportunity for Brady to examine one of two lead investigators, namely NFL Executive Vice President and General Counsel Jeff Pash; and (C) denial of equal access to investigative files, including witness interview notes.

Seems Berman found that Goodell violated Article 46.

So no one's saying Brady's innocent, just that the NFL punished him wrong.

Or, to put it in football terms, Goodell made it into the end zone, but Berman says he stepped out of bounds on the 8.

So, now I guess the official amount of games a player can be suspended for deflating the footballs is no games?

Hmm, so the "controversy" started right before the Superbowl and ended a week before the start of the season, hmm?

I guess the ESPN and NFL hit squads worked their creative magic on this one quite well, huh? Nothing like a good manufactured controversy in the off season to keep people watching.
