Yesterday's NXT was quite good...but that's to be expected from WWE's best show.

Alex Riley may have a new nickname, and I quite dig it: it's "Amp'd Up" Alex Riley. In fact, he's gone from a tweener announcer commentator to a face commentator...to I suspect Kevin Owen's punching bag. More on that later.

This episode:

1: Hideo Atami d. Bull Dempsey in a quick match. Whatever happened to Bull's push? I guess now that Rhyno's back, we don't need a pretender. Decent match, nothing to complain about outside of Bull losing. After the match: Tyler Breeze comes out, attacks Hideo, and tries to take a pic with a selfie stick. Yes, seriously: they exist, and he tried. Hideo gets up, and retaliates, but Tyler retreats. They're fun.

A video package (re)introducing the world to THE Brian Kendrick was next: good stuff. I quite missed him. They focused mostly on him being intelligent, clever and a little diabolical. I would have preferred a little of his face run, and his intro, when delivered a singing telegram to the Undertaker...but with only one hour for NXT, I'll take what I can get. Youtube the video of Kendrick's singing telegram: it's quite hilarious.

2: The Lucha Dragons d. Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger. After a little offence, Jordan tagged in Dillinger, who basically mouthed off to Jordan when he tried to tag in. End comes when Dillinger tries to tag in Jordan, Jordan steps off the apron, and Dillinger eats an SDS. I like the Lucha Dragons...but Jordan/Dillinger could be good.

Finn Balor has a backstage interview with the new guy, and it's pretty generic stuff. He puts over Kendrick (it's Balor vs Kendrick in the main event).

3: Baron Corbin d. Tye Dillinger via End of Days in mere seconds. Seems Dillinger didn't bother leaving the ring. He was demanding Jordan explain himself and he'd fight who came next. Writing this took about ten times longer than the match. While I always love a Baron Corbin squash...surely they can do more with his character.

Backstage: Charlotte talks about Sasha. Her rematch is next week. Also, Tyler Breeze talks smack about Hideo Itami. Finally, a quick bit about Sami Zayn in Abu Dhabi. Didn't show him speaking Arabic, which would have been pretty cool.

4: Becky Lynch d. Bayley vis submission after a really painful looking armbar. I want the WWE to read this: Get rid of most of the WWE Divas, and put the NXT Womans' division on. The Bellas are Divas. I prefer WOMENS WRESTLING on XNT over the Divas division. Bayley. Sasha Banks. Charlotte. Becky Lynch. Blue Pants. Carmella. That's all you need. Maybe sprinkle in a little Natalya, too. No more Bellas.

Rhyno is backstage, and he's in NXT because he sees fire in the eyes of the competitors: the same fire in his eyes. Seems he's looking to win the NXT championship...and he finishes with a Gore! Gore! Gore!.

Jason Jordan has one thing to say: he'll give explanations as to why he abandoned Dillinger when he's good and ready. Alrightythen.

5: Finn Balor d. THE Brian Kendrick via double stomp from the top rope. Wow. So much to go over here:

First thing: Kendrick got a great reaction from the NXT crowd. It may be my imagination, but maybe he was taken back by how they reacted.

Kevin Owens joined the commentary team, and Alex Riley talked to him about the title, Sami Zayn, amd Finn Balor. Alex said at one time (when discussing Owen's betrayal of Zayn) that he's a man and he wouldn't do that to a friend, and Owens got up and left shortly afterward. At the end of the match, Owens reappeared and attacked Riley.

Kendrick vs Balor, meanwhile, was quite good...I was quite taken back by how silent the crowd was, but if anything, you couldn't hear either guy call audibles during the match, which to me means they either rehearsed it and it was second nature, or they know each other well enough to interpret their next moves or something. I quite liked it, Balor never ceases to amaze me, and I hope Kendrick comes back again. I wouldn't mind seeing Paul London, too.

I'm not one for ratings, but I'd give the show a 5/5 - it never dragged, the interviews were done quickly, and well...it's NXT. I haven't seen a BAD episode of NXT since it's reboot at Full Sail.

Next week: Sami Zayn comes back to discuss Kevin Owens. Will Alex Riley have something to say about Owens? Will Rhyno return? The episode's been taped but dammit, I don't want to know!

Big Ryck was the most relevant man in professional wrestling last night, appearing in video form on NXT (standing behind The Brian Kendrick) and mentioned verbally on Lucha Underground.

I wonder if there's any chance of Brian Kendrick jumping up to the main roster to feud with his former classmate Daniel Bryan? That could be a great match or two and I think Kendrick can perform at a high enough level not to drag Bryan down from the main event scene.

Thanks for the write-up Oliver. My recap was both late and also entirely half-assed, because I was on a hot date Wednesday night. We went to a concert that appeared to take place entirely inside a Coen brothers movie. Anyhoo.

I'm like the only guy on the planet that liked Bull, but I like Rhyno better, so there you go. Japanese face against big gaijin monster was not a match I ever expected to see on American television, but we do live in interesting times. The selfie bit that Breeze did with Itami afterwards was great.

I liked the Bayley/Lynch match, but it was basically the same match they wrestled a couple months ago, except that time Lynch was working the knee.

Kendrick seems a little rusty, but it still wound up being a pretty good match. Does anyone know if he's sticking around? It's interesting to me that they're bringing in more seasoned vets like him and Rhyno.

Well, winter is my favorite season...so there ya go.

Seriiously, though...I totally missed that, thanks for bringing it up. Not that it's an excuse, but I bought a new laptop and my fingers slipped. Let this be a lesson, kids: Proofreading is king.

Well, I guess that makes two of us being fans of Bull...but to be honest, when I look at him, I have flashbacks of 80s jobbers on WWF Cavalcade or Maple Leaf Wrestling. Back when there was only two hours of wrestling on TV, and it was on Saturday and Sunday at noon.

Bull Dempsey is great, but I like having fat guys doing fat guy stuff in my world of wrestling. Good tag team wrestling, a proper midcard title and fat guys are all things I dearly miss.

I'd be surprised if Kendrick was sticking around, considering how badly he and Paul London badmouthed everything WWE in their infamous Shoot interview. If Vince can forgive the "bearskin" rug accusations, he's a greater man than I've given him credit for. I don't know about Cody Rhodes however.

By the by, I fucking loved "The Brian Kendrick" gimmick back in the day. I used his theme as an alarm clock for months. His music hit and I was dancing in my living room like it was the end of Footloose.

Kendrick reportedly was there to try out for a trainer position at the NXT Performance Center.

Bret Hart, The Ultimate Warrior, and Bruno Sammartino all came back into the fold after trashing Vince for years. Paul Heyman is currently with the company and, by most accounts, Vince absolutely loathes him. At this point, the only person who could shock me with their return is Nailz, and he hasn't wrestled a match in 15 years.

I've been watching NXT for months, but I just can't get behind Becky Lynch.

All I've seen is the headbanging, Hook 'Em Horns, one pumphandle suplex and multiple legdrops. She HAS to have more, right?

Man I wish I could get in the head of Vince. He can be stubbornly spiteful for some current and former superstars but leave the door open for those who trash him terribly sometimes. Is it strictly "Just business"? I can see him seeing a big investment in making a deal with Brock after his abrupt quitting when he was hot, but you'd figure he'd see little value to put Kendrick on the payroll?

I'm sure as poop not complaining though, to busy dancing to Kendrick's theme still.

On her debut, she did some kind of Riverdance thing at the top of the ramp.

At least they're not booking her as a female Sheamus.

Well, she's now beaten Bayley twice via submission in the last couple of months. Each victory had her targeting a different body part and using a different submission hold to secure the tap out. She had to get some kind of credit for that, right?

Comparing NXT to the main roster isn't wise for all sorts of reasons, but main roster 'submission expert' Daniel Bryan is still only ever able to get submission victories via his designated finisher, the YES!lock. Having a wrestler who might not have a specific submission finisher but is capable of getting submissions with different moves targeting different body parts is something we haven't seen in WWE before.
