So last week I managed to break my ankle. I was in wrestling training and managed to take a standard suplex REALLY badly, landing on one bent foot. Not realizing the severity of what I had just done, I foolishly decided to drive home on it. It was a painful two hours. After checking in to hospital the next day, they told me I had a spiral fracture and would need metalwork.

After a week of hospital, morphine and metal plates (step aside Lex Luger!) I am now left to do nothing for the next few months as I heal up. Before this, I was lucky enough to never have any serious injury. The knock-on effects of such a thing had never really occurred to me before, and it's difficult to adjust: no work, no band, no gym, no going out at all. Yikes.

My plan is to be walking normally again in time for my wedding in July.

Have you ever broken anything? If so, how? What was your recovery time like? Do you have any tips? (Sorry, that's technically more than one question!)

Which bone did you break?

I shattered both the tibia and fibula of my right ankle skydiving many moons ago. It sucked. I have 4 screws as a result.

I'm surprised you were able to drive if you ended up needing surgery and plates, I couldn't even stand. I could feel my foot floating around, unattached to the socket that no longer existed.

I forget exactly when I got the cast off but I went back to work after about 6 weeks with a walking cast/boot. I didn't need 6 weeks off from work, but the dick manager had to reduce head count so he fired me (on his last day at that site) because I wasn't there. That was at the 3 week mark. His replacement brought me back 3 weeks later when another team member relocated :)

My recommendations are to keep your foot up as much as possible until you start rehab, then work hard at rehab once it begins. I can't give advice on how not to go nuts while being cooped up inside. It wasn't a big deal for me since I'm mostly a recluse anyway. I convalesced by re-reading the Wheel of Time series and playing video games. I live alone so borrowing the wheelchair my departed grandmother previously used made moving around easier, especially when preparing meals. You might want to try sticking to your normal sleep schedule. I went way off my normal pattern and when I finally got back to work it was very hard to readjust.

I had my booboo in June and was playing paintball in September, although I was still tender, so I'm optimistic you'll be OK for your wedding.

You know what, for the life of me I'm not sure as last week was kind of a blur. I was told it was the pieces which hold your foot in place like a golf tee that shifted out of place. They initially tried to just manipulate them back into place (most painful experience ever) but then said I'd be best with the plate and surgery.

Was it a bad landing with the skydiving?

I'm surprised I drove too. I think my body was still in shock. It did feel a bit wobbly but I guess I thought it was just swollen or something.

That sucks that you got fired, glad they had the sense to rehire you. It's heartening to read that you were up and about after six weeks.

Thanks for the tips! :-)

Both feet broken intentionally to repair curved feet when I was four years old. Had casts on for a bit after. Had to re-learn how to use my feet and walk again. This is why I have zero balance, have osteo-arthritis in both feet, screws holding them together, some scars, and my ankles crack every time that I walk. I guess they never did heal correctly.

So whatever you do, make damn sure you do whatever you can to get your foot working again. Mien couldn't be helped, but hopefully yours can!

Broken orbital bone after being assaulted by some drunks (yes, I was sober. No, I did not instigate it). Repaired with some metal being fused to said bone, it's healed nicely - although I lose feeling on that part of my face sometimes.

Broken nose twice-ish. Have had to recent surgeries to correct it. Good news; nasal passages now cleared of obstruction. Bad news; nostril still collapses when I breathe in.

That's an impressive list! So sorry you've had to go through all of that. The cool thing is you must be about half terminator by now. :-)

I definitely feel so appreciative now of having had a good bill of health for so long.

Thanks for sharing.

Broke my left collarbone when I was 5 years old when I fell and hit a rock. Other than that one time, I have been lucky to get away with chips & bruises.

Yeh my landing sucked. After I hit I tried standing up and fell over twice before I realized my foot didn't work.

Somewhere between 3 and 6 weeks I got the plaster cast off and transitioned to the boot cast so I could walk and do some rehab.

As much as I like to complain about the one manager firing me for not being there, the extra 3 weeks really helped with my recovery. 3 more weeks of keeping the foot elevated was a big help. Had I gone back to work just 3 weeks after surgery I would have been in a good deal of pain from sitting with my foot hanging down. And the new manager brought me backed based on my reputation so really no harm done.

Read it and weep, fella

I broke my left wrist in 5th grade. I was struck by a car while riding my bike to school. They called it a "green twig break". Best way I can describe it in writing is if you snapped a bone in two, then split Half A down the middle, and shoved Half B into the Half A split. One of the bones still sticks up under the skin under my watch.

I had a few hard casts on that covered from my knuckles up to my bicep. They'd put one on for a couple weeks, cut it off, re-examine the bones, re-set the break/healing BY HAND, then put a new cast on. I think they did that 2-3 times. Then I got downgraded to a shorter cast that stopped at my forearm, then down to a removable leather & spandex hand brace.

Once my casts were off, the doctors gave me a physical therapy routine to do at home. I don't remember exactly what it was now, but it involved stretching/bending my wrist while submerged in hot water. I didn't like doing the exercises so I didn't do them. As a result, today I am unable to bend my left wrist and the first knuckle of my left index finger simultaneously.

In other words, if I try to make a fist and bend my wrist at the same time, my index finger sticks out and I cant keep the fist. If I hold my index finger down with my thumb, my wrist wont bend. Not really an issue now. But every once in a while, someone will ask me "What are you pointing at?", or "Why are you holding that like that?".

So in closing, don't skip out on any physical therapy exercises they give you!

Oh, I also broke my left ring finger a couple years later, but that story isn't nearly as exciting.

Just a broken left pinkie during high school wrestling (um... during warmups). They didn't cast it - they froze it and then stuck a Bic pen between my pinkie and ring fingers and kinda bent and pulled to get the finger back in place, and then just taped the two fingers together. Excruciatingly painful when it happened but healed very quickly. I think I was supposed to keep it taped for six weeks but stopped after three with no ill effects.

Summer of '86, one month after graduating from high school, I flipped our three wheeler in the middle of our hayfield, knocked me out for what I figure was 20 minutes. Was awake about 10 before my brother found me (I had missed supper and the fam was looking for me). My left leg was in a world of hurt. Luckily, I had woke up laying on my back, so I could sit up and wave to him. He went and got our parents, put an air splint on, loaded me in the back of our conversion van and rushed me to the hospital 10 miles away.
Besides a pretty major concussion, the right side of my face half scraped off and a small patch of my hair in the center of my hairline gone, (which still swirls wierd from it growing back), the x-ray showed that I had broken my femur into three parts. Looking at it from the side, if you went to the center part on the bottom of my bone and drew a "v" up on each side about 6" long, that was what my femur looked like.
I was in traction for a week to get things straightened out (thankfully, not a lot on internal damage or bone movement), then they put a steel rod down the middle of my femur, and bolts on each end to hold the bone in place so it could heal.
My doc told me I was probably going to be on crutches 'til mid-October. Well, with college starting the beginning of September, that didn't sound so cool.
Thankfully, we had a 30' diameter, 4' deep swimming pool in our backyard on the farm. Once my incisions healed, I was in that pool every chance I got, putting as much weight on my leg as I could, walking in circles till I got sore.
Went to the check up beginning of August, and the doc said: "Well, let's see what you can do." I put the crutches against the wall, stood up and started walking towards him. He freaked the hell out: "WOAHWOAHWOAH what are you doing?!?!?!" Mom said: "He's been walking on it like that for the past week."
I got off my crutches one week before college started. I did bring them along, and there were some days that big campus got the best of me, but, thank GOD I didn't have to rely on them.

Moral of the story: pools are your friend. Find one, work that ankle as good as you can. Your body knows its limits. Pay attention to it.

Second moral of the story: don't go flying thru the hayfieled doing (what my Dad figures) 50 mph and try to jump the drainage ditch. Not a good idea.

About 6 years ago I took a dive off of the top of a seven foot ladder. I was painting my raised ceiling and was just about done except for one small corner. Instead of being smart and moving the ladder the two feet that I needed, I just went for it and climbed up to the top (where we aren't supposed to stand) using the wall as support. I was successful with getting the last corner painted. Then of course I fell head over heels.

Ended up with a fracture on my right humerus (right where it meets at the elbow) two snapped Metacarpals in my left hand and a hole in the wall that I somehow crashed into on the way down.

The left hand required two surgical steel rods to repair the damage. The right arm a simple cast. Both healed within a six week period, but man it sure was fun having two arms in a cast at the same time.

A lapse in judgement taught me a very important lesson about mortality. I easily could have been paralyzed or hell even dead. An inch or so with the wrong neck movement and that could have been it.

So, yeah as we all know, don't go beyond the warning sticker on ladders.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. Pretty fascinating to hear how all of your injuries came about. It seems like physio is the part I really need to pay attention to.

I'm 9 days post-surgery as i write this, still confined to bed and in a lot of pain, but I know it will get easier.

I had the bic pen treatment as well with a dislocated ring finger. Man, did that hurt, but once back in place was not a real issue.

Luckily, while I have had an extremely sprained ankle at one point while in college that required a wrap for about two weeks, I can say I never actually had a broken bone.

The thing is that I used to believe some broken bones were less serious then others, like a broken toe or finger. And then back in October, I had a friend who suffered a hairline fracture on his big toe. No big deal I thought, it had to be a bit painful but he wears a cast for a month or so and he should be back on his feet literally soon after. What ended up happening was that a blood clot developed as a result and nearly killed him. He collapsed at home and had his mother not gone to visit on a whim and find him that day, he would had been a goner. He ended up being hospitalized for a couple of weeks and only recently, after a couple of months, got his cast removed. It made me realize that even with a 'little' broken bone injury, it can become very serious if not treated right and you don't realize certain symptoms affecting your body right away.

So griff, I hope you heal up pretty quickly and without any complications. Just be cautious of any ill effects throughout your body because it may be a sign that the inactivity of moving your body around may be taking a toll on you.

Every one of my fingers, some more than once, and in different areas but never a knuckle on the finger. Did break three knuckles on my right hand (index on one incident, ring and pinky on another) and two on my left (ring and pinky). Broke my nose twice. Never from fighting or training to fight, just a lifetime of basketball, baseball and football with a bit of childhood-adolescent hockey. Breaking fingers and knuckles is the most annoying thing in the world because it doesn't hurt all the time but still prevents normal function. You never realize how little you think about minor digit movements until they hurt to make. I've been lucky to never break anything else. I've sprained both ankles enough times, and severely enough, to not be able to sprain them anymore. Like everyone else has said, follow the physical therapy routine given to you. There's a reason for all of those seemingly useless and annoying exercises.

Thanks for the tips.

I've now been moved into a lighter cast and started doing upper body workouts at home. Apparently I'll be in a position to start weight bearing in four weeks, I'll be sure to hit all the physio like a pro!

That's the absolute right attitude to have. A good friend of mine broke his ankle playing football last year(his foot was facing the wrong way at the end of the play) and now has significant hardware. He followed the rehab program, and did more when his body let him. He was walking with a boot in less than 6 weeks. As has been said in this thread, listen to your body for your rehab limits, keep a positive and driven attitude, and you'll be back to normal faster than you thought.

Three more weeks in the cast. The swelling has gone down a great deal. I've just tried to post the lovely image of my originally swollen foot but for some reason it would paste nicely into the CKEditor but wouldn't post. You're not missing out on too much!

Things should get more interesting when I can start to bear weight in three weeks!
