Grandstanding? Calculated? Unprofessional?

Maybe. Maybe not, but isn't it funny he gets a longer suspension than Goodell gave Rice?

I also think Goodell is a liar.

Who protects the shield more the NFL or ESPN? ESPN will suspend anyone for the minorest of things. Didn't one female anchor get suspended just for saying she doesn't like Notre Dame? I fuck hate Notre Dame!

Get off the internet for a few hours and all the sudden Deadspin is sticking up for Bill Simmons. Dogs and cats living together! Now I have to picture the sequence of events that will cause them to back Punching Bag Of The Moment Peter King...

Maybe. Maybe not, but isn't it funny he gets a longer suspension than Goodell gave Rice?

Yea, though this is (at least) suspension #3 for Simmons and that probably played a lot into the length. The bit daring ESPN to do anything to do him also was probably more of a problem than what he said about Goodell, since inconsistent double standards on punishments has been a hot topic around ESPN of late. The next high profile person to jump out of line was going to get the hammer and Simmons readily made himself the nail.

In the last year, Simmons has come off increasingly defensive (more so on his podcasts, but you can read it into his pull back from Twitter just as well) but there was obviously some previous conversation between him and management about his tone on Goodell that he was reacting to - the entire challenge to ESPN to censor him came off as nonsense based only what we heard on the podcast, so there's had to be more going on here and it probably figured into the punishment. (Which doesn't make ESPN look good at all.)

Short term, I wonder what his suspension will do to the NBA preview stuff - he was teasing starting the video bits this weekend, but being out until the 15th makes it hard to get all that done by the 28th - and the Grantland TV special that's supposed to take place six days after his suspension ends. Maybe he can work on these things but just not talk about these things (though being angry about being suspended probably won't help 'em.)

Longer term, Grantland was always about Simmons getting to live his dream of being able to create his own separate site with editorial freedom while ESPN kept his revenue in their empire. That worked, until now. If Simmons had gone on his own, he wouldn't be suspended now but he might have not been able to attract all the (excellent) talent that staffs Grantland. I'm not sure what his contract comes up, but he's going to have the same decision at that same point, plenty of reason to again think he might rather do it on his own, and probably even more money to not be hurt much if it fails. (He's also running out of time to make such a move work.) I would've bet Simmons sticking with ESPN forever before this came up, now I'm not so sure.

(And I think Grantland's odds of doing OK are pretty good whatever happens next.)

On the one hand, this seems like it might be impetus to go off on his own. Although as much as people like Sal are his friends, Sal is also an employee of the greater ABC\Disney conglomerate, so that might be difficult to extricate himself.

Listening to his recent podcast with Beadle, he seemed glad that she was back in the ESPN fold, so it would seem that he might not regard going off on his own too highly, but then again, he might just be happy for Beadle because it sounded like she didn't enjoy her time away, and he was just glad to have a friend back at his place of work.

At the end of the day, this only gets ESPN attention. They can claim they are disciplining their employees, but everyone who follows Simmons (*raises hand*) is going to be looking forward to his first podcast back, even though I know full well he'll behave and at most make a few vague references to how he can't talk about what happened.

I'm just sad we won't get guess the lines for another three weeks, though.

And Goodell totally lied.

Simmons has become such an NBA guy in recent years and a TV talking head that would he really leave the ESPN/Disney/ABC family since they're the ones with the NBA rights? I guess he could do the basketball TV stuff on TNT or something and then just create his own independent website --- Simmonsland?

Let's also not overlook how ESPN has Streisand Effect'd the hell out of this story. Two days ago, Simmons was just one of many media folks saying Goodell was lying and should be fired. Today, Simmons is a martyr and now the face of the 'ESPN is in too deep with the NFL to be anything close to objective' movement.

This....can't stay at 3 weeks. What an absolute farce. Yes, I am a Bill Simmons fan. Yes, I enjoy the "guess the lines" podcast as it helps me with my football picks. This seems egregious even by ESPN (double) standards. Damn, i did not want to come home to this nonsense.

The NBA rights are up after next season and it's very unclear who will end up with what - how that goes looked like it'd be the first big moment of the Adam Silver reign until the Sterling mess happened.

Simmons asked off the ESPN NBA pregame show after last season; the idea of the Grantland show seemed to be to allow him to keep a toe in that water, without the time restriction inherently in a pregame show and without having to spend as much time away from his family (since it wouldn't be an every week thing.) If Fox or NBC or whomever got the NBA, they could/would easily offer him a blank check to do whatever he wants. I've grown to enjoy the Men In Blazers, but they're like 1/20th as important as Simmons and NBCSN eagerly gave them occasional TV shows to do whatever they want however they want. By that scale, Fox could as well offer Simmons Fox Sports 2 to rebrand as SimmonsVision and let him program the thing.

I am glad to hear he is off the pregame. While I like his podcasts, writing and other ventures I felt like he was out of his element and overexposed causing the rest of his work to suffer. I actually cooled on him because he didn't seem right.

I agree that his window is closing to make a jump and it will be interesting to see if ESPN undervalues the guy and his huge following not to mention his contributions like Grantland and 30 for 30. If you are another sports network that's off the grid I think you offer him the house. I'd like to see him leave just to see what else he fan create and who he would bring along.

He's been one of the lone voices against Goodell for years now, so this might have been unavoidable.

I also hope there is a mini riot over the three weeks of not getting pick the lines podcasts.

Do you think Goodell got this tape?

No, no fuck you. Notre Dame is going to be the only thing standing between the ill advised Winston lead FSU and the national championship. That said, she didn't deserve to be suspended. Neither does Bill. I find him to be an asshole. I like his Vegas column, but sometimes its hard for me to take him seriously since I think he has his head up his ass. I downloaded the entire episode, so I am going to hear in context to what else was going on.

ESPN is a Juggernaut backed by unmovable force in Disney. Even if they somehow lose Grantland and the NBA, it won't matter. As long as they have MNF and College Football, no one can tell them what to do. To me, this sounds like some PC HR rep or executive got their panties in a twist or its ESPN creating controversy, because the OTL about the Ravens maybe bullshit.

The more important question: Does Cousin Sal win the next three weeks by default? If so, will his lead in the season be insurmountable, and will Simmons be beaten by a Subway sub at the end of the season?

Ideally, I'd love to hear the podcast for the next three weeks being Cousin Sal betting against Cousin Sal doing a Simmons impression.

Count me among those who think this suspension is ridiculous.

His recent comments about Adrian Peterson and harming kids were perfect. He's a dad. He speaks from experience.

He's called out Goodell for weeks in his mailbags and prediction columns. So has Olbermann, but he kept his cool. Simmons stepped out a little. Understandably. Defensibly. But ESPN can't allow that degree of expression to spread to its other products. They made an example, certainly more than Steven A. Smith was a few months back over the Rice incident.

I root for Simmons. I want him to come back early, and I don't want him to apologize in his first days back. Or at all. He's a fan. He's not a reporter or an anchor. He's The Sports Guy. And he spoke like it. The reason this is getting such blowback is because so many people agree with him. And everyone involved knows that. This doesn't diminish his position with ESPN. It delineates it.

I would pay to join a Simmons Hangout while he watched an NFL game. Especially tonight.

HOW DOES BILL NOT DO THIS FOR THE NEXT THREE WEEKS OF SHOWS?!?!?!

That would seriously be genius. Have Sal play Bill with enough plausible deniability that Bill's feeding him any lines, if Sal even needs him to do so. That said, Bill's too mature to do that now. But seriously, I would love that too.

Simmons returned to ESPN today for the regular NBA team predictions with Jalen Rose.

Also the NY Times asks if Simmons might follow Beck and Stern by starting up his own multimedia platform. (nytimes.com).
