The Recap for WWE Raw 7.28.14, live from Houston, TX.

Has anyone ever noticed that there's a shot of David Otunga in the opening "Then Now Forever" graphic?

There's a recap of Stephanie McMahon's arrest from last week and Triple H's decision to go for the nuclear option, and then the show starts proper with John Cena heading to the ring, and he's in Serious Cena mode tonight. Cena acknowledges that the Universe wants to see Brock beating the hell out of him, prompting raucus 'YES' chants. Apparently Brock is a seismic surgeon. Cena's cognizant that he's going to receive a beating of a lifetime at Summerslam, but true to nature, he vows to fight and references his win over Brock from two years ago. Cena correctly paints Brock as an uncontrollable monster but now Paul Heyman is out to promise that Brock will conquer Cena at Summerslam, turning him into a victim. Does John know how it feels to be victimized? If he doesn't, he should ask the Undertaker! Heyman efficiently talks up Brock as a heartless mercinary world-destroyer who will beat, victimize, and conquer Cena. Cena interrupts to talk about passion, invoking Paul's past in ECW, and proceeds to deliver an absolutely electrifying promo asserting that his heart and passion, something Brock lacks, will carry him through the fight. Now Cesaro's out to defend Paul Heyman's honor by calling John Cena a "muscled-up walking billboard" who can't wrestle and challenging him to a match. John's happy to accept and promises to wrestle circles around Cesaro. 1 for 1. Tremendous mic work from Cena - it's days like this when he reminds you why he's a star.

Match 1: Non-title: John Cena v Cesaro
Cesaro wins a test of strength but Cena controls him on the ground and throws a monkey flip! Cesaro catches him during a leapfrog and slams him to turn the tide. Cena snaps off the Cenacarana for 2 but runs into a back elbow on the follow-up, conceding the control of the match. Cesaro drives him off the apron, but Cena comes back with vengeance, smartly triggering a brawl. Cesaro stops the momentum by reversing a bulldog and beats on him some more as we go to a commercial. Back from the break, it's Cena with his shoulderblocks, but Cesaro reverses the blue thunder bomb into an awesome DDT for 2. Cena stops the Cesaro Swing with sheer core strength and takes him down with a sitout powerbomb for 2. Cena heads to the top, but Cesaro crotches him and boots him in the face. Deadlift Superplex gets 2 for Cesaro, but he runs into a boot. Cena's subsequent jump lands him in the Swing for ten turns! They fight over leg submissions, but Cena takes him down with the blue thunder powerbomb and the Five-Knuckle Shuffle. Cesaro stops the AA, but Cena starts climbing the ropes for a SUPER AA attempt, only for Cesaro to fight him off. Cena rolls through a crossbody and powers him into the AA, but Cesaro flips out and nails him with the Very European Uppercut for 2! The crowd correctly regales them with the "This is Awesome" chant. Cena flips out of the Neutralizer and they exchange some MANLY big boots. Cesaro wins that and heads to the top but he gets caught there and Cena brings him down with a SUPER AA for the win in 15 minutes. 2 for 2. Say what you will about John Cena, the man can wrestle. What a glorious start to the show.

Stephanie McMahon is on the verge of an emotional breakdown because she can't get the smell of prison out of her nose and she can't forget the look of disappointment in her daughter's eyes. Triple H's comforting words are interrupted by an irate Randy Orton who wants to know where his title shot went. HHH points out that as long as Roman Reigns is in the picture, Randy won't have any title shots because Reigns will screw them up anyway. Randy promises to take care of that problem, but HHH tells him that Reigns faces Kane tonight. So that means Orton has a problem with Reigns, he has a problem with Kane, and now he has a problem with Triple H.

Paige is out to set the record straight regarding the events of last week. Paige wants AJ to know that she's young and sometimes lets her emotions get the better of herself. Paige still thinks of AJ as her best friend in the whole wide world and promises never to repeat her deplorable actions from last week. AJ's out to call her a crumpet again, and she's not buying it. If Paige wants to be like AJ, she should handle her issues like a real woman. Paige inadvertantly calls her crazy, but promises never to make fun of AJ's mental health, and them's fighting words! AJ puts the boots to her but Paige escapes, pleading all the way up the ramp - "we're SUPPOSED to be real friends!" 2 for 3. This is a better role for Paige, but this still felt a little off.

The Authority join us so HHH can chastise us for laughing at his wife when she was arrested last week. Crowd: "JAILBIRD!" Trips wants to know if the crowd have the guts to laugh at his wife as she was treated like a common criminal? YES! Do we know how badly it hurt Stephanie? YES! All over a little misunderstanding; of course, Brie Bella was asking for it. It's just a misunderstanding, the charges have been dropped except the assault and battery charge that Brie just refuses to take back. The Authority want to put this ugly incident behind them, so Stephanie calls out Brie Bella, but Chris Jericho answers instead to share with the Authority his sympathies with a song - he gets the crowd to sing "Bad Boys" for Steph! Since orange is the new black, it's okay to be a jailbird! Chris turns his sights onto Trips, asking him why he didn't leave the arena with Steph when she was arrested - it must be that Trips is realizing what Chris has known for a long time - that Steph's a filthy, dirty, bottom-feeding, trashbag ho! Triple H wants him to focus on Bray Wyatt, so Jericho demands a match tonight. Triple H says that must wait until Summerslam, but tonight Jericho gets Seth Rollins, who now attacks with the briefcase and leaves Jericho lying. 2 for 4. Chris's act never really gets old, but this segment meandered from story to story without really doing much for any of those stories.

Match 2: Rybaxel and the Miz v Dolph Ziggler and the Usos
Dolph wants to start with Miz, but runs into Ryback instead. Axel comes in with a dropkick for 2. JBL's outrage at #JailBird is quite amusing. Dolph tags out to Jimmy and he beats up on Axel as Nation of Domination v.2.0 watch backstage. Flying Uso time! Dolph nearly gets his hands on Miz's moneymaker, but he escapes and we go to a break. Back from the break and it's Ryback in control. Xavier Woods and his crew have made their way down to the ring. The heels take turns beating up on Jimmy Uso until he makes a comeback by mulekicking Miz and it's HOT TAG Dolph! He flies all around the ring, and Ryback bears the brunt of it until he reverses the ZigZag. Dolph drops him with the big DDT, but Miz saves the matchup. In the ensuing melee, Miz nearly gets his head kicked off by Jey Uso and Curtis Axel falls victim to an Uso dive. Miz stops the dive at his end, but has to bail to save the moneymaker from Ziggler's fists. That leaves Ryback alone with Dolph, and Ziggler finishes with the ZigZag in 10 minutes. 3 for 5. Perfectly decent.

Match 3: R-Truth v The Inspirational Bo Dallas
Bo knows that Truth can never be undefeated, but he too can be victorious if he can just #BoLieve. Bo brings him down with a shoulderblock and goes for a victory lap, but Truth rolls him up to kill the streak at the 1-minute mark. 3 for 6. Bo seems to take this in stride, but then he snaps and beats the hell out of Truth, finishing off with a butterfly DDT. Another victory lap!

Rusev and Lana are out for the next segment - Lana wants to talk about the American flag. Where is Old Glory now? Lana lays into American leadership, but now Jack and Uncle Zeb are out to rebut. Zeb wants to talk Stars and Stripes, which apparently represents pickup trucks, pretty girls, and beer. I think he's doing more damage to the image of the flag than Lana can ever do. WE THE PEOPLE! That's the call for Swagger to charge the ring, but Rusev's waiting for him outside the ring and kicks his ass. Rusev wants to CRUSH, but Swagger grabs his ankle instead. Rusev escapes the lock, but Swagger fights him off and keeps him out of the ring. USA! USA! 3 for 7.That's a truly awful promo by Zeb, both in idea and in execution.

Match 4: Damien Sandow v Adam Rose
Sandow (in astronaut gear) claims to have searched for signs of intelligent life, only to have found nitwits, dimwits, and half-wits. Rose calls him a "sour little spaceman" and wants him to avoid being a lemon. Sandow promises to make him scream but then loses to the Party Foul in less than 10 seconds. 3 for 8.

Match 5: Roman Reigns v Kane
This never gets started as Randy Orton attacks Roman on his way down to the ring. Reigns takes the fight to ringside, but there the numbers overpower him until he fights off Orton with the Superman Punch. Kane asserts himself with the Chokeslam to leave Reigns down, and Orton takes full advantage, hammering him around ringside. "YOU WANNA STEAL FROM ME?!" Orton drops him with the DDT off the barricade and RKOs him on the table, but it won't budge. Another RKO gets the job done. 4 for 9. A straightforward, old-school beatdown to set up a grudge match at a PPV? Works for me.

Match 5: Fandango v Diego
Layla and Summer Rae accompany Diego and El Torito to the ring. Fandango controls with chops in the corner and big backdrop but stops to mouth off with Layla and Summer. Diego momentarily gains the advantage but Fandango puts him down with ease. Fandago heads to the top but gets distracted by El Torito and Diego finishes with a springboard sunset flip in 2 minutes. 4 for 10. Fandango's up on the apron to protest this, but that gets him gored in his dancing stars for his troubles. (Hidden Highlight: Diego's "I dunno!" to Fandango's pained cries of "WHY??!")

Stephanie is searching for Brie Bella but runs into Nikki instead. Steph hopes that Brie will be reasonable but Nikki's looking forward to Brie extending Steph's misery.

Stardust is still searching for that cosmic key, but Goldust reveals that "they have it."

Match 6: Natalya and Naomi v Cameron and Alicia Fox
Nattie and Alicia Fox start, but Naomi comes in and beats up on Alicia Fox. Naomi stops to jump Cameron on the outside, but that allows Fox to drop her with the scissors kick. Cameron demands to be tagged in, but Naomi wraps her up in a legscissors hold for the win in 3 minutes. 4 for 11.

Match 7: Chris Jericho v Seth Rollins
Jericho controls in the corner but Rollins heads outside to take a breather. Jericho follows and kicks his ass around ringside, and they get into a brief chopfest until Jericho stops a dive and takes control back inside. Suplex and the running enzuigiri get 2 for Jericho but he runs into a beautiful arching dropkick. Chris avoids a charge and bowls him over with a springboard bodyblock, dumping him to the outside as we go to a commercial. Back from the break, and it's Rollins in control with a headlock but Jericho mounts a brief comeback that's snuffed out quickly. Rollins puts the badmouth on him quite literally but Jericho shrugs that off and avoids a charge to build up some momentum but Rollins ends that with a running headlock. Jericho runs right into Rollins' turnbuckle STO but crotches Seth on the top rope. They fight over a superplex and Jericho wins that by backdropping him off the turnbuckle and follows with a crossbody for 2. They counter each other until Jericho gets dropped with the turnbuckle powerbomb, but Rollins winds up into the Walls of Jericho. He manages to block with the help of the ropes and turns the tables on Jericho with an enzuigiri. Rollins wants a springboard curbstomp, but he lands into the Codebreaker and now the lights go out, signalling the appearance of the Wyatt Family for the Sportz Entertainment Finish at 14 minutes. 5 for 12. This was fun while it lasted and you knew there wasn't going to be a clean finish. The Wyatts quickly beat Jericho down, allowing Bray to finish the job with Sister Abigail.

So it's Stephanie and Brie McMahon in the main event tonight. Stephanie stands before us a humbled woman. Getting arrested is a life-altering experience. Stephanie and her children are scarred for life. Suddenly Brie Bella makes her way to the ring to call Steph a "snivelling rich bitch." Steph wants Brie to drop the charges because she doesn't deserve this, but Brie thinks she deserves to go to hell! Steph promises to treat Nikki fairly and professionally, but Brie wants her own job back. Steph's okay with that, but Brie also wants a match at Summerslam - against Steph. Steph tries to reason with her, but Brie won't budge. Forced into a corner and left with no options, Steph accepts. And proceeds to slap the taste out of Brie's face and promises to make Brie her bitch at Summerslam! CATFIGHT! Noble, Finlay, Joey Mercury, and HHH are out to separate them, and that's how we end it tonight. 6 for 13. That was glorious from Stephanie, but Brie has the same acting talent and range as Stephanie circa 1998. But Steph, ooh! Great work.

Wrestling Counter: 45 minutes.

The first hour of this show is can't miss television, and then it tapers off sharply for the next two hours. There's some positives there for sure, like Orton's beatdown, Y2J/Rollins, and Stephanie's impeccable grasp on her character, but the rest is largely uninspired filler.

After the big pull-a-part ending, the show ends with the crowd chanting "JAMIE.....NOBLE".

The first thing I did when I got the network was look up Jamie Noble matches. I marked out when I saw him but I didn't realize the rest of the crowd would too.

Seeing Jaime Noble in a suit is infinitely more entertaining than seeing anything Brie vs. Steph sans their much more talented spouses. If this is a way to get people more interested in the Diva's Division again it's working as we have three major angles involving the ladies happening at once. So two out of three ain't bad.

Crowds are random these days. We've had them chant for JBL during a perfectly fine match.

I wonder if they'll try to use Bryan in the feud.
He might not be close to a return in the ring, but having him at ringside would raise the interest of the crowd.

Smart of the writers to bring up Cena beating Brock two year ago. It's always cool when they don't completely forget what has happened in the past even if they'll pretend this is a whole new thing.

Wait, are they giving Ambrose's angle to Reigns now?

Cena-Cesaro II wasn't as good as Cena-Cesaro I for many reasons (everything they've done to mess with Cesaro in between, having to do a "we just broke you up with Heyman but uh, go cut a promo about how you like Heyman" spot, Cena's slow-mo fantasy wrestling camp moves in the beginning), but it was still pretty great. Cesaro's 2nd rope superplex from the apron to the ring will never be anything less than amazing, and Cena breaking out the his (usually reserved for Big Match Main Event flying crossbody rollover reversal) as a sign of respect for Cesaro and to play into the freakishly strong vs. freakishly story they had going was perfect. Going to the even-more-rare Super AA to defeat Cesaro (who is immune to the regular AA) was also nice. Orton-Cesaro and the Cesaro-Bryan portion of Bryan's Authority Gauntlet match are still the best WWE Cesaro matches, but I long for a legit, pushed-as-equals Cena-Cesaro III with the uppercuts cranked up to infinity, because Cena has proven that he'll be able to make it work.

I basically have no opinion on anything else on the entire show (other than #PASSION being the new Cena buzzword), though I'm curious to see Orton-Reigns since Orton seems to be back in a good place now and this should be a great test for Reigns as a solo guy (matches with a dialed-in Orton and vs. Sheamus should be can't miss moments for Reigns).

Liked the couple nods to the Wayback Machine, with the "AJ is crazy" and "Stephanie is a blah blah blah HO" bits. Also, I couldn't tell at the end if the crowd was chanting "This is awesome" or "this is awful" -- anyone else pick up one of the two, in addition to the Jamie Noble chants?

Also, is this the first time in a while for the Cesaro Swing? It seemed that they were taking that away because it was being cheered too much. Back to it now?

Didn't even watch the opening segment, but lemme guess...

He notes to the crowd that some people like him and some don't then panders to the ones that don't by trying to steal his opponents heat. And then gets raspy & out of breath near the end to EMPHASISE HIS PASSSION.

Am I right?

When a Jamie Noble sighting is one of the better parts of the show then you are in trouble. Jericho being old school Jericho was probably the real highlight. While I like Cesaro, he is in a weird spot. Last night in some eyes helped, but probably not. Cena can eat a job on TV every once in a while.

I know everyone is no in love with Steph. She is an automatic click of the dial for me. Its sad, Paige/AJ may get lost as the big women's match for this shit.

Brie is god-awful; it's like she has negative acting talent. Her delivery is just so awkward, and the pronunciation isn't always there (she called Steph a "human bean" last week). Replace her with someone who's competent and that segment (which is still a hit for me for Steph's good work) comes off a lot better than it did.

While I agree that this is the template for the usual Serious Cena promo, this time it felt appropriate. He did an adequate job of putting over Brock as a legitimate threat and looked concerned, which is more respect than he gives his opponents on a regular basis. At least he wasn't laughing off Brock's threat because "I already beat him two years ago LOL," which is what I was afraid his promo would turn into. As far as the actual execution and the delivery of the promo goes, I will contend that there aren't too many on the current roster who could've nailed it better than Cena did last night.

I thought the show was pretty good, all things considered. The opening segment was long but it did what it needed to do, and Cena showed some fear on the mic (not that I think anyone expected him to go Alberto Del Rio on Lesnar). He also mentioned his match with Lesnar at Extreme Rules, so it'll be interesting to see if that plays a bigger part in the build-up now that it's canon.

Cena vs. Cesaro was also a really good match and a nice showcase for Cesaro, something he hasn't been getting much of lately.

Still not sure how I feel about the A.J. vs. Paige stuff. I really like them both, but this story just isn't clicking yet.

The first Steph/Triple H segment hit all the notes that allowed the crowd to play along. That made it more fun than it would've been otherwise.

Miz has found a character that really works for him, and Dolph Ziggler got a win. That's something.

I'm surprised no one (except used2bcool in his recap) mentioned the Bo Dallas loss. And to R-Truth? That came out of nowhere.

The show was improved greatly by not forcing us to sit through Reigns vs. Kane.

The final segment was okay. Steph is really good in this role and while Brie isn't great, she gets the job done. I don't think the segment was bad enough to reverse the momentum this storyline has.

Getting to watch Cena vs. Cesaro should never bring the snark out of anyone, but agreed that this match was nowhere near as good as their previous match. It was almost a move by move recreation of the last match, only sloppier.

If this was any other time, Brie/Steph would be the only prominent story involving WWE's women, and I would complain. But now, there's a decent-sized spotlight on Paige/AJ, and that's all good.

My wife has been begging to see a hilarious mugshot of Steph since the end of last week's show. Missed opportunity, here.

I hate to say this, but during the Diva's tag match, I fully expected JBL to pull a Don Imus.

Can't BO-lieve that the streak got beaten, and the victory goes to ... R-Truth??? I get that breaking 'the streak' wasn't going to be anywhere near the level of breaking the Taker's WM streak, and if it gets R-Truth (who I loved in TNA) a push out of the bottom of the card up to the middle, I'm down with that, but I kinda expected someone higher on the pecking order to be the one to show Bo Dallas his place.

Cesaro has delivered the match of the night the past two shows. His 'hardcore' match with Ambrose was excellent on Smackdown last week and for a curtain jerker with a guy who often phones it in, Cesaro/Cena was pretty badass. He did look very strong and like a legit threat to Cena throughout the match. If booked right they could easily give him that final bump up to main event level; he just needs to start winning matches again. All the respect pops in the world won't advance him to the main event.

Speaking of the curtain jerker main event, I even enjoyed the Cena promo, which he delivered with some pretty solid intensity (though I still don't believe he'll be beating Brock at SummerSlam, a brief title reign for Lesner has seemed to be in the cards for awhile now).

I gotta agree with lotjx on this one, Stephanie is pretty much an automatic channel turner. Her voice is just far too nasal, it drags on my ears. Plus, she's not exactly working a program with the best Diva on the roster either. While I agree that another Diva would definitely be better in this spot, they kinda have to go with Brie since this is an extension of 'make Daniel Bryan's life a living hell.' Since D-Bry is out of commission for who knows how long, they shifted it to Steph and the Bellas.

In other angles that the IWC seems to like that I turn the channel on: I continue to refuse to support Zeb and Swagger as babyfaces. These kinds of faux-patriotic feuds always annoy me anyway.

I don't really understand why Paige is still trying to pretend to be AJ's friend, even though she beat the crap out of her last week. Just commit to the turn and be done with it already, WWE.

Jericho seemed back on top of his game, or at least, dangling off the side instead of being crushed beneath the bottom. Busting out the 'filthy, disgusting, brutal, etc etc TRASHBAG HO' line again was a nice bit of nostalgia, though made me wonder if Jericho is going to go on to feuding with the Authority again after he finishes his program with Wyatt. I loved the 'finish' of the match with the springboard Curbstomp getting reversed into a Codebreaker. Then we get a Sports Entertainment beatdown when the Wyatts come to town. For a guy who won the first match of the feud, Jericho is eating some pretty regular and pretty brutal beat-downs. On a side note, glad to see the rather nasty black eyes both Wyatt and Jericho were sporting last week are looking better.

Cena-Cesaro was really good as long as you didn't dwell on the inevitability of the outcome. It took a top-rope F-U to end it, too.

Things I don't bother with any more: Anything Authority-related, anything Bella-related. My friend Mark agrees with me.

Officially tired of Rusev and Lana. I don't get the Lana love beyond her wearing Stacy Keibler's old WCW attire.

Jericho should have known what was down the Triple H road when he took a step or two in that direction...he kinda deserved what he got there.

Reminded me of something I meant to bring up. It's little things that bother me about the shows. There's no logical explanation for Rollins to come out. It's not like HHH can say "Hey Rollins, Jericho is going to interrupt me, so I want you ready to blast him with a briefcase -- and then we'll make a match between you two." What, we're supposed to believe that Rollins is on standby with the briefcase just in case SOMEbody interrupts HHH and Stephanie?

I figured the Jericho-Rollins match was going to happen anyways, just Jericho didn't check the sheets yet.
And yes, heels always stand at the gorilla position to do the bidding of their bosses

I have no problem with R-Truth beating Bo.
This way they don't have to keep the silly 11 & Bo, 12 & Bo thing going. It was lame.
It also gives Bo the chance to actually really act like a heel (against someone his own size) and be a real jerk.
It also gives him his first feud. And Truth is at the bottom of the barrel but it's a start.

Steph looked good in the shirt & jeans. Different from her usual dresses but quite nice. Her act(ing) was funny tho I did think it went on a bit too long. The slap was good and Brie sold it well, just flying from the apron.

The show seemed light on wrestling tonight.
But Cena/Cesaro and Rollins/Jericho were quite good.
Don't recall much from the 3-man tag match though wow..Dolph won again!

Is it that hard to believe? How often do HHH & Stephanie go out, only to be interrupted? I'd guess upwards of 75%. It makes perfect sense to have someone on call.

Wasn't Batista getting injuries like this when he first came in and was on the shelf for a while? He probably should've just taken some time off to properly rehab the first injury instead of working with one.
