The greatest tragedy in this booking is that we'll have to listen to more Randy Orton promos. The horror, the horror.

So which PPV match gets a repeat tonight? Sandow/Cody? Ambrose/RVD with a title switch?

CRZ and John really questioned why I was losing my mind when Cena didn't turn heel at Wrestlemania and now I see it with the "Bryan will never get another main event push again" in this thread.

Due to the build up for this match and the outcome of the betrayal and robbing by Orton and HHH, Bryan just became a legit badass and an agent of revenge. Vince tells him that he is too small and weird looking to be champion, and Cena swears up and down that all Bryan's experience from wrestling around the world from high school gyms to the Tokyo Dome doesn't equate to being ready to win the WWE Championship. So Bryan responds by beating Cena clean, not with a roll up, outside shenanigans, or match gimmicks. The smaller weird looking Bryan stands up to Cena and knocks him the fuck out with a knee to the face!

It would be one thing to build Bryan up as a giant killer but it has to look legit. Kurt Angle was a smaller guy as is Mysterio, but only one primarily stayed in the main event and was multiple time Heavyweight champion for extended periods. Mysterio would get his wins mainly by roll ups which look weaker than say Kurt Angle tossing a guy Lesnar's size around and making guys tap to Ankle Locks. They are going that route with Bryan as he can be goofy outside of the ring, but he is a fast, persistent, teflon-tough MMA-wrestler-hybrid specialist who is afraid of no one in the ring with him. They've been building him up in this way since his pre-Team Hell No feud with Kane.

Now after knocking out and jumping the hurdle that he can beat one of this generation's greatest champions, he has the combined power of the WWE's current owner, his son in law who was one of the greatest champions (and manipulators) of his generation, and ultimately the manipulative career shortening opportunistic champion both Vince and Triple H have been grooming and protecting since Evolution. He got a little to hard to control when he attacked his makers (The McMahons, Trips) but he has been humbled since then and now he is the fully realized monster they always wanted.

Now if they focus the story on Bryan getting revenge on The Mcmahon-Helmsley-Orton era by getting screwed in the next PPV against Orton, then going to war and taking out the opposition thrown in front him until Orton is the last man left Bryan will never see the midcard again.

I loved the show. Both main events were brilliant. Clever spots all over the place. Christian/ADR, too.

One nice little thing about the HHH swerve was that it implicitly put the belt over in a big way. This week, the heel promoters went to absurd lengths to ensure Daniel Bryan could not possibly leave Summerslam holding the WWE Title. Subtext: It really, really matters who's WWE Champion. Forget the nebulous "It's About The WWE Universe" greatness contest which you win by being John Cena - that's so 2012. At least for now, the main event program is one man's quest to reclaim the belt as its rightful owner, and to get revenge on the jerks who stole it. This is how it should be. (This approval subject to change if they bungle the HHH/Vince/Bryan/Cena promos tomorrow night, e.g. by having Bryan present a reasoned argument that he can too draw money.)

I MUCH prefer this to HHH-backs-Bryan vs. Vince-backs-Orton.

Amen. And another benefit: No more face HHH! Good riddance. I generally like strong heels, and HHH is rarely booked unstrong. (This optimism subject to change if we are subjected to face Stephanie anytime soon.)

There's a shortage of established heels for Bryan and Punk to run through. If I had the book, Evolution would be forming an uneasy alliance with the Shield and maybe Heyman.

Wyatt debuts with a (1) borderline Wrestlecrap (2) gimmick match (3) against Kane. I love it. I guess he's on the Undertaker career track.

I didn't know what to make of Del Rio's post-match promo, the material was very babyface

I took it as Del Rio adapting Cena's obnoxious pandering side to the Latino fans, in an effort to get them to boo him like everybody else does. They need a hero to make them raise their filthy fat little hands in the air and scream go Del Rio go.

I was so, so sure that Rey was going to pop up during that Del Rio promo to set up his next feud. Such a weird post-match interview to do.

This show was unbelievably good, by the way. The last five minutes were masterful in their working of people like lotjz and Wpob.

What's concerning is Helmsley got in on two red hot can't miss wrestling moments with Punk and Brock and missed pretty badly both times. Both Punk and Brock were able to shake it off and move on, so it is disappointing they are trying it yet again.

Randy Orton is our third two strike champion, no?

Best PPV WWE have put out all year and one of the best SummerSlams ever. Easily the best since 2009.

I didn't think the Ring of Fire match was as bad as some folk are saying. The main problem with it was the removal of the "set your opponent on fire to win" rule. Inferno matches have never been known for being high quality wrestling contests, but they've historically been a lot of fun. The enjoyment comes from the spectacle of seeing someone set on fire (that sounds psychotic now that I've read it back but it's true!) and the drama of the match derives from watching the wrestlers attempt to set one another alight and avoid the flames themselves. A PG-rated Inferno match (or Ring of Fire match) is about as redundant as a Barbed Wire Ring match where the wrestlers never make contact with the barbed wire.
That said, I didn't think the match was terrible.

Punk/Lesnar was awesome and really highlighted how badly Brock was wasted for the better part of a year in a HHH feud that yielded no good matches, hurt Brock's credibility as a monster, and really only served to stroke HHH's ego. This was the complete opposite of that. It was a wild, heated, stiff brawl with a believable story and a result that hurt neither guy, making Brock look like a beast (albeit a beast that can be beaten) and Punk look like a bad-ass who might have won had he not lost his focus just when he had the monster on the ropes.

Cena/Bryan was everything it should have been and everything I'd hoped it would be. Just a straight-up wrestling match with no ref bumps, no outside interference, no Sports Entertainment bullshit to drag it down. HHH as a ref was a non-factor (at least during the match)and didn't detract from the contest at all. Just a great match with the right guy going over at the right time.
The aftermath seems to have pissed a lot of people off but I didn't (and don't) see it as a negative. I'd love to see Bryan be given a decent run with the title but Orton's cash-in doesn't mean we're not gonna get that. It just means we're gonna have to wait. With Cena being gone for a while (presumably), that's gonna leave Bryan (and Punk) as the #1 face(s) in the company and a feud against Orton, HHH and (presumably) the McMahons is every bit as big a feud as Bryan would have been involved in had Orton not cashed in last night.

I had zero problem with that which I said was a great way to get Bryan over. Its the All About the Game shit in the post. Where is the evidence from this company that they know what they are doing with these angles? Is it Punk? Nope. Is it Ryder? Nope. Is it Ziggler? Nope. Its all going to come back to Cena winning the title from Orton. The rest is just to get us through the usually shitty fall this company has.

Let me ask this question when was Austin and Hogan the most over? When they had the title and running with it. This idea that the chase is the only way to get people over is silly. People want to see their guy as the Man not a guy who can't win and when he does, he gets punked out.

If Daniel Bryan's career crashes and burns like Punk's apparently has since SummerSlam 2011, I'd be a very happy camper. And I must have missed Ryder and Ziggler getting their clean wins over the most protected main eventer of the last ten years.

Daniel Bryan isn't Steve Austin or Hulk Hogan. Daniel Bryan is Mick Foley. Last night was his Survivor Series '98 moment - when he gets to his 4th January Raw moment, the place is going to come unglued.

I jumped into the local TGI Friday that was showing SummerSlam right as the Punk/Lesnar video package started.

The TGIF crowd was glued to the screen for every second of Punk/Lesnar. The crowd was loud and popped for the big spots in Cena/Bryan, but was somewhat distracted in between spots.

Everything that happened with Orton and HHH was fully expected, but there was that tiny part of me that thought Bryan would kick out of Orton's cover. Imagine the insanity if that happened.

Not that it really matters in the larger scheme of things, but Bryan wasn't in shape to compete against Orton when that bell rang. I thought maybe there'd be an out to undo the title switch, but who which suit would advocate for Bryan? Steph?

The simplest way to keep Bryan from using his Rematch clause is to note that Cena has the exact same clause, and they just find a way to award him the match, giving us Cena/Orton until Survivor Series with Vince in Orton's corner, simultaneously giving us Bryan/HHH leading up to Survivor Series. This also plays well with Barrett going 'corporate' since he and Cena have a history, with all of this pointing to the Nexus as a turning point in WWE history. This could also include Darren Young in a singles push (which might be why he found a TMZ camera last week), Ryback as the corporate muscle, both of whom are Nexus guys...

Assuming that Brock/Punk will happen again, then Punk doesn't get into the title hunt and Heyman keeps bringing in Paul Heyman guys. He might use the Shield here and there, but taking Ryback under his wing, or maybe another tag team of doom to be Heyman guys. Hell, Alberto could easily be a Paul Heyman guy since he has nothing to do until Survivor Series himself, wrestles a very fluid style, and might do well with an English speaking representative. This would put Punk in the chase for the World Title, with Heyman nixing his attempts at ADR and whatnot by questioning his ability to challenge for it.

Sandow holds the case longer, and I don't see the US or IC titles going anyplace soon...

I think what the nay-sayers are trying to nay-say is that HHH's involvement with Punk ruined something that could've been really cool and made it decidedly less cool. Luckily for us, Punk was able to overcome HHH's meddling. We're just not sure Bryan will be able to recover in the same way IF things end up going south.

In all honesty, this can go one of 2 ways:

  • REALLY REALLY AWESOME if last night's nonsense ending leads to Bryan coming all the way back at the Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania, which makes me nervous since RR is still 5 months away and WM is 3 more months after that.

(I guess he COULD get his revenge before then, but I have to imagine he'd be better off going over clean last night at SummerSlam and ending that show as champion instead of getting screwed last night and regaining the title at some lesser PPV.)

    OR...

  • REALLY REALLY LAME if this whole Daniel-Bryan-was-the-champ-for-like-30-seconds thing is treated like just another bump in the road in the larger HHH/McMahon power struggle angle. Again. Ugh.

Daniel Bryan isn't Steve Austin or Hulk Hogan. Daniel Bryan is Mick Foley.
I just need to add that this is a fantastic analogy.

Because I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to WWE from about 2006-2010, I thought this was Orton's first or second reign as WWE Champ. I knew he had the WHC a few times, but had no memory of a WWE Title run. Turns out it's his SEVENTH. Yikes!

I really want to be mad about the turn events for Daniel Bryan, but I'll wait to see where they go with it first. Jobbing him in 18 seconds at Wrestlemania turned him into the third (arguably second) biggest face in the company. Just imagine what this will do. (I'm sure that was the line of thinking going into the booking decision.)

On the other hand, they may have pissed the crowd off enough that they'll crap all over ANYTHING they try tonight. Should be fun!

I'm not sure why some people are hating on the ring of fire match. I thought it was cool as hell and the Wyatt family is one of the best new gimmicks in a long time. It's so outside the box, it's almost impossible to describe to someone.

    Summerslam was wall-to-wall awesome.

I dunno, all of the rumors suggest that the big angle is a "McMahon power struggle" so it's more likely to end up as HHH-backs-Orton vs Vince-backs-Bryan now. Yeah, makes no sense, but I have a feeling we'll see about 20 alliance shifts tonight on Raw alone.

Yes, and Vince McMahon himself made it on RAW to Daniel Bryan's face a couple of weeks ago.

I cannot say enough good things about Brock Lesnar and CM Punk. Forget the "Best Vs. The Beast" WWE corporate tagline, it was Wolverine Vs. Colossus. That match was not only sensational, Match of the Year in my eyes, but the storyline going into it and playing out was pretty much exactly what I wanted. The moral: Brock is a great friend. He's Paul Heyman's true best friend. He went to war to defend his friend and the Best Friends ended up working together to bring down Punk. My favorite bit was Brock having Punk on his shoulders for the F5, Punk grabbing Paul's tie, and Brock screaming "LET GO!! LET GO!!" Brock Lesnar is a killer, but he will NOT and NEVER do anything that could harm Paul. Lesnar's a man. He's the guy you want on your side. Plus the dialogue throughout the match was hilarious, like Brock's taunts "COME ON, BABY GIRL!!" and when the audio had to be muted because Punk screamed "MOTHERFUCKER!". Everything about the match, the performances from all three, was stratospheric.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

I hate being right sometimes. I believe I was the only one who called the Cena/Bryan match and post-match correctly in the predictions thread. (And it was precisely because this is what I feared they'd do that I changed my mind at the last second and didn't buy the show.) Once again, as with Punk in 2011, WWE fails to take the opportunity to do something daring and get potential mainstream pub out of it and falls back into their same old politics. Sigh. At least I can now hate HHH and Randall Q. Dumbfuck again with a clear conscience.

Bryan has until Survivor Series to win the belt before the crowd loses their patience with things. Just a gut feeling. Let's see how they screw it up.

(And part of the reason they can't draw things out with Bryan until the Rumble or Wrestlemania? Cena's actually going to take a good amount of time off after his elbow surgery if PWI is to be believed, which means that they can't delay Bryan's rematch(es). Bryan has to carry the story going forward.)

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Wolverine vs. Juggernaut. Wolverine vs. Colossus makes no sense in my nerd mind.

My question is why couldn't last night be Bryan's January 4th night? Is Randy Orton that important or even HHH. Someone pointed out this is Orton's 7th title reign, I can't even more than three. All of which HHH murdered or maybe it was two of them, I forget. Anyway, why not Bryan run with the title for more than 30 seconds? If they are thinking "Oh well, look how it went at him at Mania when that happened?" Yeah, the reason he became huge was due to the WWE booking department being a bunch of fucking morons. Again, where is the proof they know what they are doing?

In defense of the Randy Orton Decision, at some point recently, Creative must have looked at their roster and saw that they have no top main event heels anymore.

    Cena? Face.
    Bryan? Face.
    Punk? Face.
    Henry? Face.
    Big Show? Face.

They even turned Ziggler recently. Who is left on the main event heel side? Brock is a seasonal employee. That leaves Alberto Del Rio, The Shield, and... no one. Well, and Ryback, the Scourge of Catering.

So they needed a main event heel. Orton has that pedigree, pun intended, he's been a loyal trooper who's spent the past couple of years in limbo not really mattering too much, considering he was THE heel of 2008-2009. It's just as much time for Orton, in a way, as it is for Daniel Bryan. There's a big MAIN EVENT HEEL hole to fill, and Orton is it.

    It's fine with me.
