Read it and weep, fella

This is what I've been rooting for all along. You still ok with "stealing" another city's team?

Also, is this sale of the Kings still about not getting an arena in Sac or more about the Maloofs falling on hard (for them) times?

There is a difference in this situation that most any Sonics fan would point out. When Clay Bennett bought the Sonics he SAID he would (paraphrasing) "do everything he could to keep the team in Seattle" and he had a bunch of people jump through a bunch of hoops locally in an effort to make that happen when he had no plans to do anything but move them. At least Hansen has been upfront about buying the team to move them, and he let the Maloofs be the ones to (allegedly) try to keep the team there.

Anyway, if your hockey team has shaky ownership they might be the net to move to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and it would be under the same scenario. The lack of false pretense is what makes me OK with this whole thing as a soon-to-be-again-Sonics fan.

Too bad Seattle cannot get their name and colors back from OKC like the way Charlotte is trying to get the hornets name back from NO.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Oklahoma City left the Sonics name/stats in Seattle as one of the conditions of the move. In fact, as per an AP story from 2008 (sports.espn.go.com)... they did, sort of.

The league hasn't yet announced a new name for the Oklahoma City franchise, which has applied for trademarks for six: Thunder, Bison, Energy, Wind, Marshalls and Barons.

That team will be allowed to use the SuperSonics' statistical history, although a future Seattle NBA franchise could also stake a claim to share those records.

At this point, the Thunder have their own history and don't need to coast on the Sonics stats, so I don't see any reason Bennett would oppose Seattle using Seattle's history.

OKC is not the Sonics, and their colors are not yellow and green. There was a deal in place where if Seattle got a team by 2013 (I think) they'd get all that back.

On July 2 (2008), hours before the judge was to release her ruling, it was announced that the team and city had reached a settlement where PBC would pay the city $45 million immediately in exchange for breaking the lease and an additional $30 million if Seattle was not given a replacement team in five years. According to the conditions of the settlement, the Sonics' name and colors could not be used by the team in Oklahoma City, but could be taken by a future team in Seattle, although no promises for a replacement team were given. The OKC team would retain the franchise history of the SuperSonics, which could be "shared" with any future NBA team in Seattle. (from Wikipedia but also true)

I don't know when the "five years" clock started, but if it was 7/2/08 then there are still six months to go. (Also - HA HA CLAY GET YOUR CHECKBOOK OUT.)

Of course, but I assume the OKC ownership group still owns the Sonics name.

They're not the Texas Senators, but they still own the Senators name, which is one reason they moved to the Nationals (according to local media at the time). It is so weird to see the Rangers wear "Washington" uniforms during throwback nights.

I'll see it when I see it. They did promise to stay in Seattle after all. According to http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_22340402/report-sacramento-kings-verge-being-sold-moved-seattle?source=rss

The Sacramento Kings are reportedly on the verge of being sold and moved to Seattle, Yahoo Sports reported Wednesday morning.
    ...
Meanwhile, a source close to the Kings told the Sacramento Bee that the Yahoo report was inaccurate.

Right. The 5-year "we can still be the 'Seattle SuperSonics' if we get a team"-deal was HUGE at the time because it kind of saved face for the city in that at least there wouldn't be "OKC Sonics". It's not like the Charlotte hoops situation with the "Hornets", it's more like the Browns getting to be "the Browns" when the then-Browns became the Ravens.

Well, in each of their previous moves they kept similar names...

Rochester Royals
Cincinnati Royals
Kansas City Kings
Kansas City-Omaha Kings
Sacramento Kings

So why break tradition. And which city is next? Trend is northwest....maybe Anchorage?

Great news for Seattle. I grew up a Sonics fan and Seattle is a great basketball town. I have become a Knicks fan since, but every time OKC comes to town Walt Frazier always mentions how Seattle was one of his favorite places to play.

Of course the original move to OKC should have never happened, if anything the Kings should be moving there now. Seattle never stopped supporting it's team even when they were tanking and Key Arena is a perfectly acceptable place to play.

I feel bad for Kings fans as they did nothing wrong. Still I look forward to some Knicks/Sonics

California doesn't need this many basketball teams. Good for Seattle even if it is going to be a glorified expansion team.

I am not shocked by this news. For those who remember, there's been talk of Sacramento moving for years but only recently to Seattle (as of the summertime?). It would be cool to see hometown boy Isiah Thomas come back to town after playing some college ball for the Huskies.

Keep the "Kings" name but change the logo design to a king salmon.

Alaskans will then support the team like total prostitutes, because when it comes to sports, Alaska is really just a Seattle suburb.

Seattle SuperSonics fan but not a Seattle resident, and I would definitely feel weird about getting the Sonics (presumably) back at the expense of another city losing their team, but I guess since the Kings have moved a few times before it's not *as* distasteful.

I'm sure I could get back into the groove of following the NBA if it happens but I'd be woefully out of touch about what players were where and who even coaches in the league any more, other than the most recent Kentucky players because I stopped following the league cold turkey when the Sonics moved. I suppose I'll cross that bridge when/if it happens.

And used to be a women's hoops team. (They aren't going to be anything but the Seattle SuperSonics.)

The alternative is an expansion team, which would mean one division would have six teams. And if the NBA wanted to keep an even number of teams in each division, they'd have to create five more expansion teams. A 36-team NBA would be WAY too much.
