I was talking about this last night with a couple friends, but it appears that this year has had the best line up of films that any of us could remember.
Avengers, Skyfall, Batman, Spider-Man, Prometheus, even a 3D Star Wars movie came out this year. Lots of geeky stuff. There were also tons of other movies that weren't huge blockbusters, but still fun like Ted, Expendables, Resident Evil, Sinister, Cabin in the Woods, 21 Jump Street, Looper, Argo.
There's more I'm forgetting, but I just can't remember a year that I've seen this many movies in the theaters. Hollywood certainly earned my money this year.
1939 was one of the years in which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated ten films for Best Picture:
Dark Victory Gone With the Wind (The winner) Goodbye, Mr. Chips Love Affair Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Ninotchka Of Mice and Men Stagecoach The Wizard of Oz Wuthering Heights
1976
All The President's Men Network Taxi Driver Rocky Star Wars The Omen Rocky Horror Bad News Bears Carrie Marathon Man Bound for GLory Buffalo Bill and the Indians Seven Per CEnt Soluition Small Change
Gone with the Wind is terrible and since Star Wars was in the next year, we will go with 2012. This year we got the following.
The Avengers Dark Knight Rising Lincoln Argo Skyfall Hobbit Cabin in the Woods Prometheus
So, we got a really good Marvel, DC and Bond film. An ok Alien film at least better than anything after Aliens. We also got 3D Star Wars and IMAX Raiders. So, yeah, best year ever. We also haven't even hit Oscar season yet.

No Country for Old Men There Will Be Blood Juno Grindhouse (Planet Terror/Death Race) Transformers I Am Legend Stardust (severely underrated, IMO) Ratatouille Hot Fuzz Superbad Paranormal Activity The Bourne Ultimatum Knocked Up Spider-Man 3 (I liked this, dammit!)

No. I liked No Country, but it was probably one of the weakest Oscar winners out there. I will give you, its probably one of the best comedy year, but Transformers and Grindhouse are the only good action films. 2012 has DKR, Avengers and Bond. It wins in that area. I would also take Argo over No Country.

Sorry, but I can't stand for this. No Country for Old Men is easily one of the best Oscar winners in the last 15 (I'd personally say 20) years. It's a phenomenal film, and probably the first Best Picture Oscar winner with which I actually agreed since... oh. let's be politically correct and say... Schindler's List.
And even if you don't think it was that great, it was certainly better than Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, Crash and especially Gladiator. I liked the The Departed, but it's the weakest of the Scorsese gangster films No, no, Old Country is a quality winner.
I think A Beautiful Mind is way better than No Country, but then again I hated No Country, so that is an easy statement for me to say. I would even watch Titanic 10 times to not watch No Country.

I dunno, 2012 has had a lot of really good movies, but no 'Great' movies yet. Frankly, I felt the same way about 2010 and 2011 --- probably the best movies of the last three years were Social Network and Toy Story 3, and even they had some flaws.
Then again, when you consider that the likes of Lincoln, Les Miz, Silver Linings Playbook, Hobbit, Life of Pi and other major films have yet to even be released, 2012 is still pretty strong.

I will give you Crash, I haven't seen A beautiful Mind. Gladiator was at least watchable. No Country is not even the Cohen Brothers best film, they gave them the Oscar as a lifetime achievement more than anything else. Javier was great in it as was Brolin, but Tommy Lee and all of his shit was unnecessary. The stupid story at the end was the icing on the cake for me. As much as people slam Titanic, it was a great movie and had some emotion behind it. Granted, I think its overrated, but it doesn't change the fact, it was the best movie that year. No Country like Crash was the winner due little or no competition.

And to think how long Scorsese had to wait for that honor...

So I guess I'm not going to convince you that you've entirely missed the point of No Country For Old Men any more than you will convince me that Titanic is anything more than overly-sentimental schlock with all the emotional depth of a greeting card. Hell, Roadhouse has 'some emotion behind it' - what does that even MEAN!!?!

The Apostle, Boogie Nights, and L.A. Confidential (one of which was nominated) - all infinitely better films than Titanic.
For fun, I looked up all the movies released in 2007. I have to say, I am not a fan of either No Country or Titanic. And a of the other movies listed to me a re a little over rated (Juno), solid (I am Legend) or, to me, awful (Transformers).
of course, I am the guy who saw Smokin' Aces and Eastern Promises listed and made a note to watch them again this weekend.
As for best picture for 2007, I would have picked No Country over what was nominated (Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton and There Will Be Blood). And let me tell you, There Will Be Blood should be ashamed for being nominated as that movie was all kinds of awful.
I can't believe people still think No Country is a good movie. Boring as hell, with no real point to it.
As for titanic, is was okay the first time I saw it, but after its on TNT once a week, I can't watch a second of it. (maybe that would change if they'd show Kate Winslett naked)
Rocky isn't a horrible movie, its tainted by all the sequels.

Come on Stagger Lee, we obviously all just don't "get" No Country for Old Men. I love that excuse.

Now I can't resist chiming in that I thought No Country was a snoozefest too. Pile on!
plus There Will Be Blood was fantastic and I'm someone who rarely watches dramas and even more rarely likes them.
My favorite part of having seen There Will Be Blood is understanding Patton Oswalt's bit where he impersonates DDL's character. It is in here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h0J1sphPu4
